Description:

First let me say that the fantastic idea for this swap is not mine, but @hyperoma who hosted it on May 2007. She appears as no longer active on Swap-bot so I could not resist hosting it again with some slight changes on rating requirements etc.

•International

•Seasoned swappers with rating 4.8 and above; no unexplained no-sends

•Newbies with full profile are very welcome!

Instead of purchasing a language textbook and sending it to someone, YOU shall teach your partners some words in your mother tongue. It's much cheaper and personal that way :)

For those who get partnered with someone who is a native speaker of the same language as theirs, teach them some of the basics of the language you are learning or WISH to learn.

A few ideas on what to include! Greetings like 'hello', 'goodbye', 'my name is...' - Saying 'Sorry', 'Thank you', 'You're welcome', etc - Numbers - Colors – How to describe yourself (physically and personality) in a few sentences.

Hand-written please and feel free to decorate the pages (min. 2 pagesboth sides of the pages).

Along with that please, send a small unexpensive item which has writing on the language taught or that represents any of the countries where it is spoken.

Sender’s choice so, for instance, you might wish to send a fridge magnet, a sticker sheet with the country’s flag on it, a button badge etc…

Please add in the comments below the language which is your mother tongue and those you already can write/ speak fluently so that your partner is aware of your language skills and can teach you something different.

Who knows? This swap could be the first little step towards becoming fluent in a language you even never thought about! :)

I will check all profiles before assigning partners so needless to say NO flakers are allowed in here.

Have fun!

(I will be hosting an Europe only version of this swap too! feel free to join one or both)

My mother tongue is Spanish. I stayed in the UK for 10 years so pretty fluent in English. I have lived in Germany too and I can speak Polish (intermediate level) and some Hebrew and French. I am keen to learn any other language!

@Canariangal78 : Thanks for inviting me to your swap. :o)

I love languages and I have already quite a few I can speak fluently :o) Concerning my "linguistic" background : My mother tongues are Dutch and French. I have an interpreter's degree in English and Italian, so those are already covered too. The love of my life is Spanish, therefor I am now on an intermediate level of the language of Cervantes. I studied German for 4 years but it never really appealed to me (sorry Erdbeersternchen), took Swedish courses for a year (love the sound of that language but forgot almost everything about it) and I am currently trying to master the kanji of the Japanese language (sloooow progress!). I think that it's pretty obvious that I like languages ... whatever the language that my partner will teach me, I'll be thrilled !

asmallstar 11/28/2008 #

My mother tongue is English, and I'm proficient in French (was taught) and Spanish (my mother is from Peru). I really, really want to learn Chinese (Cantonese) -- but more than anything, I want to learn Italian! ♥

pianoheart 11/28/2008 #

I will write my partners' letters in English. I can teach Hawai'ian and Japanese. I am currently studying Italian.

aams 11/29/2008 #

I'm from Finland, so Finnish is my mother tongue. I also speak English, Swedish and Estonian more or less. I'm currently taking Russian lessons and studying Northern Sami by myself. Of all the languages I've studied in the past I still remember some basics of Spanish and German. I love languages and I'm especially interested in small languages. :)

kizmet 11/29/2008 #

Hello!

My mother tongue is Italian. I can speak fluent English and Portuguese. I know fairly well French. I took German for 5 years but it's a bit rusty now because I don't have the chance to use it often. I took a year of Russian but I know very little of it.

I can't list the languages I would love to learn because it would be an endless list..Finnish and Hebrew sounds fascinating for example, Greek and Hungarian have a weird sound and what about an Oriental language??

Anniehall 11/29/2008 #

I'd love to learn Finnish :)

i'm a native english speaker from the US. i've studied a bunch of languages on the elementary level (one or two semesters) in german, latin, chinese and russian. but i have decided to major in japanese at my university :) i am a 2nd year student. it's by far

I am interested in learning any language; however, I am particularly interested in French, Russian, Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Italian, Hindustani/Hindi-Urdu. I would also welcome opportunities to practice my existing languages.

Canariangal78 12/15/2008 #

It's great to see people joining with such an interesting combination of languages!

I am looking forward to this swap and the surprise element of not knowing until the system assigns partners at the last minute which languages we will learn :)

AynE 12/18/2008 #

I speak English, both American and British and yes, there is a difference. I learned a little French in high school, 4 different teachers in four different years, one of whom only seemed to want to teach us French drinking songs...not my glass of Bordeaux, so to speak. I lived in New Mexico for 14 years and learned to speak/understand the local Mex-Tex but have fallen out of practice. I love languages and would love to become conversant in French, Hebrew (I know a smattering of that) and Spanish. I think it would rock to learn Latin, Greek and Aramaic but feel that living languages might be more practical although reading the books of the Bible, Homer and Socrates in the original language would be awesome. I also would love to learn to speak Elven, the fact that Tolkien devised his own language is amazing. Welsh also seems intriguing but any language is incredible in its' own right.

Luckystar37 12/19/2008 #

I was born and raised in America, so its my primarily language. I love languages, but I'm not so good at them! I would call myself a beginner at Spanish and a pre-beginner at French. I took 3+ years of Spanish in high school and college and can express myself very very limitedly. Dialects intrigue me. French I've wanted to learn for a long time... but lack motivation it seems. A little motivation would be cool! lol I know 1 word of Greek, a handful of Swedish, and took 4 years of Latin.

Luckystar37 12/19/2008 #

I meant to add - anyone want a hodge podge? :D

provadia 12/20/2008 #

Hi everyone! I just realized I have nothing small that I can send because Bulgarian stuff is so hard to find! :( Sadly, I can't go on with this swap, but I can still send you a letter if you want me to!

I speak Bulgarian, Macedonian, German and English so just let me know:)

mazzlestar 12/20/2008 #

Hi! I speak English primarily, since I live in England! I can speak beginner's Spanish, along with some basic German and a little Russian, and about 10 words in French!

Canariangal78 12/22/2008 #

Hello everybody! partners have been assigned :0) Apologies for the slight delay due to not having Internet connection at home these days because of the horrendous weather. Enjoy thoroughly the swap!

nephicarrera 01/ 9/2009 #

Hi there! I am a native speaker of English, and fluent in Spanish. I know some French, and I took German for two years in high school (very rusty). I take Japanese at the junior college, but my progress is sloooooow. I still love it. I would be happy to learn Japanese or any other language that my partner would like to teach.
