When Swap-Bot was new, a common craft to swap as Dotee Dolls. I loved them, and I’d like to help them make a comeback!

A Dotee Doll is a small, decorative, and whimsical simple doll with a loop to hang it up (see photo). They are sewn by hand. Here are the basic elements that should be included:

Body: the body of the doll is made from two pieces of fabric, sewn together and stuffed with cotton or poly stuffing. There are no arms or legs, just a blob for the body/head. Oval shape is common, but any shape will do.

Face: The face is usually fabric or felt with the features embroidered or sew on

Tail: One of the unique characteristics of a Dotee is a decorative beaded ‘tail’ that hangs from the bottom of the body.

Embellishments: buttons, beads, embroidery, lace, needlefelting, applique, and yarn for hair are all common ways of embellishing a Dotee. You don’t need to use ALL these elements. Whatever it takes to make your doll look special and give it some character.

Hanger: Dotees need a way to hang to be displayed. A loop of ribbon or embroidery floss works well.

Size: There is not an exact size for a Dotee, but the body should be about 4 inches long, and the tail 2-3 inches.

The style of the Dotee is sender’s choice. Please do your best work and send something that you would be happy to receive. There should be no raw edges or loose elements. Your doll should take at least an hour to make.

To join, you must have at least 10 type 3 swaps and no recent 1s or 3s. Please only sign up if you are sure you can commit to sending your Dotee. This swap has a two week turn around time, but you can begin making your Dotee before then. If you need inspiration, a Google search for “Dotee Dolls” brings up many results.

Please comment or message me if you have any questions! Happy Swapping 😊

These were a 'thing' among church going Secret Sisters where I'm from! I never thought of swapping them! YAY!

Watching for now. May I machine sew the two body pieces together once I embellish them by hand? Just double checking so I do it right.

Yes, you can use a machine for any part of it. I usually sew entirely by hand because beads and other such embellishments get in the way. If you use felt, ribbon, or other soft embellishments, that shouldn't be an issue.

I saw some pics on Pinterest (evil distraction) of a few dotee collections! I a bit amazed by all the different forms and materials! To have such a collection just became a 2021 goal!
