Description:

A lot of us use vintage pages from books or magazines as part of our artwork, whether to make altered books or greeting cards or ATCs or collages or whatever! You will have one partner for this swap, and you will send him or her at least ten paper items of vintage material.

Pages that would work well for backgrounds might include foreign-language pages from books, old pieces of sheet music, or text out of old magazines. Choose some items that would work as design elements as well: maybe some old ads, maps, photos, postcards, comic strips, illustrations, cut-outs from magazines. The key word is vintage! Try to find images and pages that get your creative juices flowing so that you'll inspire your partner. Please make sure your ten pages are orginals, not copies or printouts. There's no minimum size for the items -- use your judgement and try to make sure you're sending something you'd like to get yourself. You should probably be using a 5x7 or 8x10 envelope. (Please don't fold the pages!) It probably won't cost anything else for shipping to add in some extras -- ten items is the minimum, but go nuts! You may be able to get an idea of what kind of things your partner would like from his or her profile. Try to send a variety -- not just ten pages out of the same book or magazine. No more than a couple of doubles.

I would suggest putting some cardstock or cardboard in with your pages to protect them during shipping.

This is an international swap. Everyone is welcome, but I'll ban anyone who seems like a flaker! If you're a newbie, please be sure your profile is filled out.

If anyone has any suggestions for sources of vintage paper, please post them here! I get a lot of material from a favourite used bookstore that has all kinds of antique books and ephemera. They have an "as-is" section that is full of falling-apart old books at bargain prices, most of which are full of great pages that are coming detached from the cover. I also look for old magazines, postcards, books, and photographs in antique shops.

Libraries are also a great place to get old books and magazines. I used to work for several and have tons of stuff going back to the 1880s.

Aren't you supposed to give those back? ;)

LINDA50 04/ 7/2009 #

Watching! Sounds like fun.

wait a minute, AncientPlanter, you pick books from library and not give back??? what kind of person are you?

straycat911, The last one I join, the girl sent me a lots of same magazine pages. Looks like a dictionary. She even looking for, she just took off the pages in sequency and send it to me!!

Variety please!! Very important!!

tex82, I think AncientPlanter meant stuff the library is selling off. And thanks for the suggestion about variety; I've added it to the swap description.

I also check out the local thrift shops. You would be amazed at some of the interesting & old books, maps you can find there. I have often been pleasantly surprised to find foreign language books there too. Try garage sales, estate sales or jumble sales. I'm sorry I don't know what you would call it in all countries--it's basically a 'sale' where people are selling their junk usually at their home. Sometimes at a local community center or church. I hope this helps!

I've found a great variety of vintage papers from estate sales. I can't possibly use all these books, so this swap is great! Looking forward to it.

This was fun! I was surprised how many I had when I started gathering for this swap. Thanks for hosting!

Debrina 04/15/2009 #

Oh can't wait to do this swap! I'm a newbie, yes, but I'm definitely NOT going to be one of those horrid flakers! I know, I know, time will tell...but I'm just NoT! Anyway, I'm from New Zealand, so expect some kiwiana and I'm also a librarian and old book cllector, so you're in for a treat!

Debrina 04/15/2009 #

...and my spelling is a bit dubious, lol! I meant "collector" of course!

culpepper 04/19/2009 #

When do we get assigned partners?

straycat911 04/22/2009 #

Sorry there was a bit of a delay in assigning partners -- there was a swapper with nothing on her profile and I was trying to message her to fill out her profile before I assigned partners. Unfortunately, she hasn't logged in lately and I had to drop her from the swap. Hopefully she'll fill in her profile and join the next one. Have fun swapping! I do plan to host this one again if it goes well!
