Description:

For those who are not familiar with Jelly Rolls...a Jelly Roll is a 2 1/2 x 43 44" (width of fabric) strip that is cut and ready for sewing. There are many uses for these cute strips of fabric...crafting, quilting, and sewing.

In this swap you will have 2 partners and need 4 -1/4 yards of different fabrics with polka dots (you need to buy fabric the full width as FQ's will not work).

  • To begin have 1/4 of a yard of 4 differents fabbies (100% cotton, print,no solids, only polka dots

  • Cut them into 2 1/2 x 44" (width of fabric) strips. You should get 3 strips out of every 1/4 yard. All together you should have 12strips.

  • Send 4 different strips to 2 partners and keep 4 for your stash.

  • Send them flat, don,t roll, for easier postage purposes.

So you will have 2 partners and will send each 4 Jelly Rolls made up of 4 different fabrics and be able to keep 4 for yourself

This swap will be ongoing for 12 months with a different color or theme each month. This month theme will be Polka Dots

Is a Jelly roll a regular term? I'm pretty new to sewing.. Isn't a fourth a fat quarter?? er??

crochetjunkie 07/10/2009 #

jadedmama, jelly roll is the regular term. it's different ehn a fat quarter. a fq is made when you cut a half in half down the fold. so it's actually a piece of fabric that is approx. 18 inches by 22 inches. a fourth is 9 inches by the width of the fabric (which is typically 44ish inches).

there are lots of different kinds of "rolls" like that. there is also cakes and honey buns and charms. if you look up the phrase fabric jelly roll or the like you should get an example of more variations.

Does it have to have polka dots? I'd like to join, but I'm not terribly crazy about dots.

SimonJester, this round does call for polka dots. There will be other rounds though I'ld love you to join our swap.

thanx for the tutorial, AwtemNymf. I think i will make this bag with the polka dot strips...My grandaughter will love this as she has been asking for me to make her an overnight bag...I'll use the example on the tutorial and just make it bigger.

I too, am not particularly fond of spots but this is a good way to get over it :)

pinkdiamond 07/24/2009 #

That was a cute statement, Ozduchess. I guess us fabric lovers have got to find ways to get over our issues with certain fabrics. he he he!
