Description:

This is a swap for anyone who has never quilted but would like to try. Making a quilted fabric post card (PC) is a quick and inexpensive way to start.

Experienced quilters are also welcome as long as they realize that they will probably receive a beginner's PC. (I know that quilters are generous people and I am sure they will be quite happy to receive someone's first quilted PC!)

There is a lot of information out there on the net about making these little gems, but here are a few to start you off:

You will make one PC for each of your 2 partners. You may hand or machine quilt them, depending upon the method you choose to construct the basic card (hand quilting can really only be done on non-fused fabric).

Any standard PC size acceptable to your local post office is fine. We will be mailing these naked, with a message to our partners on the back re how we felt about our quilting experience.

The colours and designs will be sender's choice. (If you want to make fall/winter holiday themed PCs, such as for Thanksgiving, Hallowe'en, Christmas, New Year, Hannukah, etc., that would be OK too, but please check your partner's profile first, or contact them, to make sure it is acceptable.)

The Rules: 1.You must have a fully completed profile (not just a few words). 2.You must have a rating of at least 4.6 with no one ratings in the last 6 months. 3. You must have at least 5 substantial, rated swaps (no electronic, letter, list, purchased PC, etc. swaps) by the sign-up date.

While I ban after sign up date and reserve the right to do so for any reason I see fit, please do let me know if you have any concerns with anyone who has joined.

If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments section below so that everyone can benefit.

Happy quilting!

I have edited this to extend the send by date because I will be out of the country Sept. 29 - Oct. 12.

boopgirly and juju, your PCs are in the mail!

does anyone know how to keep the thread in my sewing machine from breaking while i sew?? it's not old thread. it's lack of knowledge about the machine, i'm sure. i think i had to rethread 20 times tonight. the second postcard may be solely heat n bond!

TerryF 09/22/2007 #

Some ideas that might help:

  • Are you sure you have it threaded correctly?

  • Is the tension set properly?

  • Is the needle the right size for the type of fabric you are sewing?

Good luck!

spinjenny 09/23/2007 #

I'll add .. is the needle sharp enough? Is it bent at all?

TerryF 09/25/2007 #

Or does it have a burr on it?

dreamerkins 10/ 6/2007 #

i have no idea. i ended up using a paper piercer to put holes in the fabric. (i had used ultra heat and bond, which isn't the easiest to work with.) then i handsewed the rest.

i sent today to niecedenise and peridoticparadox! i hope you love them!

I'm working on my postcards and plan to make them entirely from fabric -- will a self-adhesive stamp really stick to muslin on the back side???

dreamerkins 10/ 8/2007 #

mine stuck... i just hope they stay there!!!

incidentally, i'm rather proud of mine, since the hard parts done, so i'm putting them in the gallery. niecedenise and peridotic paradox, you are on your honor notb to look until you get yours in the mail... (unless you don't want to be surprised...

niecedenise 10/ 9/2007 #

I got mine and love it. Tried to give a heart but it wouldnt let me. Why not?? Any ideas?

Take your bobbin thread out and redo it. if that doesnt work then loosen your upper tension a little bit, a real little bit. PM me if that doesnt work.

i really enjoyed this swap, even with the machine trouble! but, i think i should just break down and sign up for sewing lessons. at this point i can't even remember how to rethread my machine, since i did it a few times wrong..lol.

TerryF 10/13/2007 #

Nice job, dreamerkins! The triumph of woman over machine! lol

heide 10/15/2007 #

I'm having a sewing machine emergency. I was finishing up to mail today, and all of a sudden my machine is not working right... The top thread doesn't "catch" on anything, only the bobbin thread is actually sewing through the fabric...? I've changed needles, rethreaded the top and the bobbin, changed feet, adjusted the tension, nothing makes any difference. I was just using it the other day with no problem?? Does this sound familiar to anyone???

If you have not received your swap by Nov. 15, please let me know. Thx! Terry
