Description:

You will be sending one partner a notebook full of thoughts, ideas, and images relating to religion, faith, spirituality, and even things that have come to be known as mythology (Greek pantheon, etc). While you will probably want to talk a bit about what you yourself believe, it should not be about just one religion or belief system. (See the bulleted guidelines below for ideas on content.) Swappers of any beliefs are welcome, from the orthodox to the atheistic. You must simply be open-minded to peeking into someone else's spiritual or non-spiritual world.

Notebooks should probably be standard 8.5x11" (composition book) size. It can be a composition book, spiral notebook, drawing pad, whatever. If you choose to use a smaller book, please ensure it is no smaller than 5x7", as anything smaller really won't give you enough room. Plan on filling 30 pages, or about 1/3 of the book. The rest of the pages are for your partner to do their own journaling in.

There is ONE main rule for this swap: Absolutely NO insulting, derogation, or condescension about any faiths or beliefs. This does not mean you can't be lighthearted, funny, or include questions about things you don't understand, however. Check out your partner's profile to see what they may find over-the-line, and if you're unsure about including something, please PM me and I will help you decide.

So what should you fill these 30+ pages with?

  • Imagery: Your own sketches/art, mandalas, stained glass photos, paintings depicting mythological scenes, etc. Even lightly humorous comics can be okay.
  • Thoughts on your own beliefs, why you believe what you do, questions you have about your own or other religions (remember, as a receiver, you may end up reading about someone's beliefs that differ from yours. Be accepting of this.)
  • Stories of important spiritual moments in your life
  • Your favorite mythological tale, Bible story, etc.
  • Be creative! Remember if you have any questions about what might be appropriate, I am available by PM.

I am giving a LONG period in which to create these, so please put thought and effort into them.

Remember these Swap-Bot ratings guidelines:

  • 5 if you receive your swap on time and it meets requirements (in this case, requirements are at least 30 pages and no overtly insulting material)
  • 3 if your swap is late or missing something
  • 1 if you never receive anything

Hearts are for you to give out at your discretion, for any reason you feel like giving a little extra love.

Please contact your partner first before rating them a 3 or a 1-- we all run into trouble sometimes, let's give each other the benefit of the doubt and work together if things don't go perfectly.

To join, you must have a completely filled out profile with at least one snail-mail swap completed, and no 1's in the last 60 days. If you have a 3 from the last 60 days, please be prepared to explain it. Journals are SO time-intensive, I don't want anyone to get short-changed here.

Any questions, please message me. May this be a joyful and thoughtful experience for you!

Discussion

Some questions came up today, which I will repost here for everyone's info:

  • Can some of the journal entries which involve writing be typed instead of handwritten?
  • Can we include the use pf scrapbooking techniques and materials, such as embossing, using pockets, items with some dimension, etc.?
  • If using a 3- or 4-ring binder, can pages be added which are not just pages, such as cardboard backed images, booklets and flyers, pages from magazines, post cards, zip-lock style backs with related items inside them, etc.?

Absolutely, the answer to all of these is YES!! Please feel free to be as creative and dimensional as you'd like. And please feel free to type-- I know handwritten entries can be nice, but for myself personally it would be a chore for my partner to try to read my handwriting, so I will be typing most of my writings.

Hm, the ability to use a 3 ring binder makes this a LOT more attractive. Not really sure I want to do all that work and not have a record of it myself. but with pages . . I can scan a copy for myself.

Hmmmmm.

This swap sounds absolutely fantastic. I'm starting Unitarian Universalist seminary this summer, so this will be great for me to both articulate my own ideas before getting to theological school and see the in-depth ideas of another and try to understand. I find stuff like this fascinating!

I love the 3-ring binder idea, whoever suggested that, you are made of win! And thank you for allowing typing - as someone who works in the digital arts, I've seriously lost any sort of endurance I once had for writing.

This is a WONDERFUL idea! I can't wait to get started. And thank you for asking about a binder. I had a stash of legal binders which were headed for the trash. Now I have a good use for at lest two of them. I will also make a copy for myself. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Awwww chucks, Miditron! The 3- or 4- ring binder twernt nuthin'! :) LOL! I just thought hat would allow participants to add more of a variety of things. I also like Revbyrd's idea of making a photocopy or scanned copy of our work to keep for ourselves.

Happy Swapping and Creating Everyone!

Ok, this is my silly question for today: by 30 page, does that mean 30 pieces of paper, both sides, or 30 sides? Hope that is as clear as mud. :)

shinywen 04/23/2010 #

I think 30 sides-- each side counts as a page. Especially if you are doing the 3-ring binder idea. Each entry should count as a page, for the work you are putting into it. However If doing a composition book or notebook I don't want the book to seem too empty, so consider making each page 1-sided. Make sense?

shinywen 04/23/2010 #

Okay let me clarify, my last comment didn't help much I don't think =)

I set a "30 page" guideline because I don't want anyone receiving a notebook that seems mostly empty. In terms of meeting the requirements, and putting adequate work into the project, I think we can count each "page" as meaning an entry. So if you are making something and putting an entry on both sides of the sheet, you would technically only need 15 of these double-sided sheets. This will work fine if you are doing a binder, as mentioned above, but if you are using a notebook it will leave many empty pages. So I would consider doing only single sided pages, so that your 30 entries fill more of the notebook. Hope this is clear-- if anyone still has questions let me know.

Oh I wish I would have seen this before. I would have loved to do this swap! Are you going to be doing another?

katara 08/ 3/2010 #

Looks like we have lot of flakers for this swap - which REALLY SUCKS as a lot of us put a lot of effort and hard work into this swap!
