Description:

What follows are the instructions I found when searching for the earliest version of this swap. It was started by user1390 in May of 2006. I have limited this to Canada and the USA as it may be a bit expensive to send.

A magic yarn ball is a gift-filled treasure, made for another person. This sweet, simple project comes from the book The Children's Year (Hawthorn Press).

Basically, you wrap cool little treasures up in a ball of yarn, with a few beautiful gifts peeking out at the edges, and give it as a gift. As the recipient crafts with the yarn the treasures fall out one by one, and they discover the fun as they knit or crochet.

This is a swap of magic yarn balls. Each one should include at least 100 yards of yarn and 6 "treasures," from very special single buttons or beads to little sets of stitch markers, tapestry needles, or very special bits of vintage ribbon and fabric. Round toys such as superballs or homemade bottlecap pincushions make excellent centers for starting your ball.

Read your partners profile to get an idea of what type of treasures to include. Also, anyone playing please share any fiber allergies you have. You only have one partner so do your best to send something you would like to get for yourself.

******First of all this is profile-based, so make sure your profile is up-to -date, Second if you have an allergy make sure it is in your profile that is where it needs to be Third-This is not about the fiber as much as it is about what is hidden in the fiber. In the end the fiber choice is the senders not the receivers *******

DO NOT MAKE COMMENTS ABOUT CHOICES HERE-THEY NEED TO BE IN YOUR PROFILE!

I have three more weeks until I assign partners and I will cancel if I think people are getting too picky. Lets have fun and treat our partners well If everyone does that it will be a great swap.

Sign ups close at the end of June. Play begins in July, and packages must be sent by the last day in July.

A few pictures of a sample yarn ball can be seen at the whipup post here: http://whipup.net/2006/04/25/kids-yarn-project-the-magic-wool-ball/ there are a few more here, http://www.flickr.com/groups/magicyarnball/, as well

The Basics: At least 10 type 2/type 3 swaps. No ones without a reasonable explanation. Any 3's and you will be banned. This is for thoughtful swappers and quality is important.

Make sure your profile is well filled out as what you say there will determine what type of gifts you get.

I will be checking profiles and if I think you are shady I will ban you without explanation.

No minimum amount to spend but please don't use that as an excuse to skimp. Make it a joy to give and receive

I'm using a plastic gumball machine bubble for the center of mine, so I can fill it with even more treasures! :)

Excellent idea, rhonnifer! I'm wondering if funky fibers would work as well as traditional yarn. I use fibers in my crafting, but since I don't knit or crochet, I don't have a lot of use for yarn.

This looks so cool! I can't wait to make it! I do have an allergy to 100 % wool. : ( Feels like someone is sticking needles in my eyes and I itch horribly! Anyway, I can use yarn that is only a small percent wool mixed with something else. I've been into crocheting lately and I like to use dk cotton, bambo or other light weight yarns for summer. Thanks!

I have had to edit the swap- Please read.

rhonnifer excellent suggestion China cat. I don`t know about others but I gove funky fibers they make the best art pieces mildred- Yarn is yarn. You take your chances. The main point of this is not the yarn itself but the treasures inside. The fiber is secondary Jennifer- Make sure you note your allergy in your profile.

Sadly I have had to ban two players due to rating issues. I do not like to do that but it is important that all the players have a good rating and no ones without explanation and no 3's at all
