Description:

There was a letterbox swap earlier but it was about mail or post boxes. Several people though it was about Letterboxing, and I decided we needed to go there! This website will explain it to those who aren't familiar: http://letterboxing.org/

This is an international swap, so be aware of overseas shipping and make your package accordingly.

Basically, the swap will be this: We will have 1 partner each, and send them a small box or zip-loc bag containing a small notebook, a handcarved or bought rubber stamp and stamp pad--a 'letterboxing kit'

Some research can find possible letterboxing clues and sites in your partner's area so you could include that info and ask for a stamped page from the letterboxes there sent back to you in return mail--optional part of the swap!

There will be thirty days between sign up deadline and mail date so you can make a personalized stamp for your partner if desired, based on info from their profile. Don't forget to stamp their new book with your own stamp!

Participants must have a rating of 4.8+. Newbies with full profiles are welcome, contact me with any questions about this swap, or Letterboxing.

Hi there. I love the idea of geocaching, but didn't want to invest in the GPS equipment then find that I didn't use it. So this is appealing to me. I've looked at the site you referred to and found that A LOT of letterboxes are in the region where I live.

Here's my question though, before I commit: For this swap, are we making just the kit or are we supposed to be finding letterboxes? (Also, the notebook is the logbook, right?)

twobluecrows 09/13/2007 #

Hi Artistic, yes, the swap is just for the kit. If you find some letterbox info about your partners area you can pass it along, and s/he has the option of trying to find it and sending you a page with the letterboxer's stamp on it---but that's totally optional. The notebook is the logbook, correct. I found some mini composition books (the ones with the classic black and white spotty covers) about 3" x 4" and find that they are nice for it, a good size for a zip-loc sandwich bag.

Hi, there.

Since I don't actually live in South Dakota, I'd like to request that if my partner sends me a letterbox clue, that it be for a letterbox somewhere close to where I will be. At the end of October, I'll be in New Orleans, and am going from there to Tennessee for the month of November, and then on to Florida for December and January. So, if you're looking for clues to send, focus on ones in New Orleans, the Chattanooga area of Tennessee, and Florida.

This will, hopefully, give you many more clues to choose from.

Also, rather than a stamp pad, would it be OK to send a sharpie? Some letterboxers prefer them, as stamp ink isn't always permanent. I've heard of better luck with pigment inks.

Thanks, Cyn. I am so in ... and excited about starting letterboxing!

This swap sounds so fun. I would be in if I did not have a heart problem that would keep me from looking for letterboxes in possibly rough terain.

twobluecrows 09/20/2007 #

Moowee, there are many letterboxes set out in easy to reach areas, too. and, with your kit from the sap, you can set out one of your own! You can register it through the main webpage of letterboxing.org and check it now and then for people like yourself who appreciate an easy walk to find them. (check out the details on the website about setting them up and where to put them, and where not to)

Several of the ones I found in New Hampshire were very easy, and I was recovering from knee surgery and had just given up my cane, so the ease was appreciated!

Mortaine, I guess a sharpie would be ok, I don't know about pigment inks, the ones I have used take forever to dry without a heat-gun and might smudge in the log book. I use a regular stamp pad from an office supply shop, they dry quickly and have been permanent so far for my uses. Cyn

I found my first real letterbox today!!! :) (I'd found a virtual one a week or so ago.) This was the first one I'd found where I had to go a-hunting.

Way cool!

twobluecrows 09/23/2007 #

Artistic--a virtual one??? How does that work? Cyn

Artistic 09/24/2007 #

Hi Cyn: It was one of the links I found on the letterboxing.org site you sent me to. You can click on the regions you want to see (I clicked all over the country!) and one of them was VIRTUAL. There are a lot of virtual ones -- Web based.

You're essentially hunting up clues and and then entering a code/key. Some are easy, some are WAY difficult.

twobluecrows 09/26/2007 #

Artistic--Thanks, I'll look for it on that site, that sounds like a great thing to do when I'm doing other tedious things online, like uploading updates to my websites. Cyn

I'm interested if you do this again. Missed the deadline.

twobluecrows 09/30/2007 #

I invited a few more to join, and the Swap-bot mods extended the deadline for signing up to Oct 5, so we have a little more time. I'll assign partners right after, so get your kits ready to mail! :)
