Description:

This is a swap to create one quiltie for one partner during the month of January. This is to be creator's choice, so really anything goes. I'm going to plan on putting a new one of these up for each month of 2011, so if you feel inclined, you might want to make them month-sensitive. Or perhaps since our partners will be chosen at the beginning of the month with a month to complete, you might want to read your partner's profile and try to make something especially pertinent to them. These are just ideas, please don't feel boxed in by them

The sign-up date will be the beginning of January and the quiltie is to be completed and mailed to your partner by the end of January. If something comes up and you will be late, please notify your partner ahead of time. Thanks.

What are the specifications for an art quiltie? I assume fabric but maybe I'm wrong. Size? Backing? Any details you can give would be helpful.

Please give more information for this swap. Size would be nice. This swap sounds very interesting, but I have never joined a swap for quilts and have no idea what a quiltie is.

There are about a million places on the internet to find out everything under the sun about quilties. A purist's version might be only cloth, 6" square - in other words, a tiny quilt. I am not a purist - as far as I'm concerned, any size that is wall hangable will be fine and any materials you want to use, you should use. If you want more direction than that, google "quilties" or set google on images and put in quilties. There are also lots of quiltie images on flicker. There are free tutorials on how to make them (one at alittlecreativespace springs to mind) Some people like to use flannel as batting in them, but I've used batting, dryer lint, home-made paper. I'm sorry you all felt I wasn't clear on this. I thought that by giving few details, it would allow for more freedom of choice. I hope you will all take a look at the internet and then join up - this is your opportunity to be as "outside the box" as you want to be . . . or as within the "normal" constructs as you wish.

I would encourage those of you who don't know about quilties to give it a try. It's a small size, can be done by hand if you like. Basically a quilt is defined as a fabric creation with three layers, top, middle and back -- the middle is usually something soft, like batting or flannel. The top is decorated in some way, with sewing, with patchwork, with applique or embroidery or with beading or various combinations, it can also be painted. The three layers are bound together --there are several ways to do it. Really as Marquettegirl says, there's a ton of information and inspiration on the internet via google. Probably there are Youtube tutorials too.

Ok, Ladies. I'm going to give this a try. We will see how it goes! Look forward to making my Quiltie and sending it on to my partner.

I did a google search on quilties and found this: http://www.alittlecreativespace.com/Quilties.php. Is this accurate? Or is her idea of a quilty a bit off? Is a more finished mini quilt what the end result should be?

This is why us newbies to this craft are asking for a bit more direction so we know what the expectations might be.

Lori, that is a rather extreme idea of making a quiltie. It doesn't at all need to be so elaborate. the Sunset publishing company [in particular] is pushing a fussy trend in crafting -- if you browse the magazine racks like I do you'd know what I mean. A quilt doesn't have to be a collage at all, keep searching or, if you're near a decent book store flip through the quilt books for small size ones.
