Description:

You know how many independent bookstores give out free bookmarks when you purchase items from them? These bookmarks usually have some sort of store information on them (like the name of the store and perhaps their address, phone number, or website). For this swap, we will be swapping these bookmarks. You will have one partner. Send your partner a bookmark from an independent bookstore near you. The bookmark must be a freebie bookmark with the store's name on it (at the very least). Handmade or other types of bookmarks are not appropriate for this swap. Also, the bookmark must come from an INDEPENDENT bookstore; chain bookstores such as Borders or Barnes and Noble are not appropriate.

This is an international swap. Newbies are welcome with a filled out profile. Rated members must have a 4.5 or better rating with no unexplained ones or threes within the last 6 months (this means that if you have a one or three from within the last six months, I expect you to send me a PM explaining the situation before you sign up - please note that I look at when the rating was left and not when the swap took place). I will angel the swap if needed.

Can you use bookmarks from authors advertising their books?

Inox 04/17/2011 #

Or what about bookmarks advertising a second-hand bookstore? I've got a really cool one that's even letter-writing themed!

@AndreaJ Are the bookmarks you're referring to advertise an author booksigning at a bookstore, or just book advertisements?

@Inox As long as the bookstore isn't associated with a major chain, I would say yes (I would consider such stores to be indies).

I'm pleased to say that I work at the coolest little indie book shop in Michigan, and I'll be glad to send along a few bookmarks! Currently, we have 6 different designs (one of which we give to each customer).

Many thanks, thesuester, for coming up with a neat swap that supports independent businesses!

And for the record, I'd very much prefer to get a bookmark from a shop, rather than one advertising an author/book!

@Audacity That's awesome that you work at an indie bookstore! This swap was actually inspired by the desire to support my favorite local indie.

And for the record - I still don't quite understand what @AndreaJ was asking. If she was asking about something like a bookmark advertising an author signing at an indie bookstore, I guess that would be ok for this swap (as long as it had information about the bookstore on it as well). A bookmark simply advertising an author or book would probably not be ok.

How sad there are so few indie bookstores left!

I was really excited for this swap, but I have to drop it because of the possible Canada Post strike. Even if partners were assigned right away, my swap probably wouldn't make it out of the country in time. If anyone would like to do a private swap after this blows over, please PM me! I have three awesome bookmarks I was going to send!

Inox 05/22/2011 #

Okay, now it looks like the strike won't be happening for a few more days, if at all, so I should be fine!

Mine are all packaged up and ready for Mr. Mailman! If anyone else would like a bookmark from the Curious Book Shop, in East Lansing, Mi, please message me! I can probably throw in a few random bookmarks from other shops, as I come across dozens of them every month.

Thanks again for a fun and original swap!
