I have chosen the Oregon State butterfly, the Oregon Swallowtail. A true native of the Northwest, the Oregon Swallowtail is at home in the lower sagebrush canyons of the Columbia River and its tributaries, including the Snake River drainage. This strikingly beautiful butterfly, predominantly yellow, is a wary, strong flier not easily captured. In 1976, it became one of the first four butterflies that the United States Postal Service placed on a postage stamp. The Swallowtail reproduces twice a year, and can be seen flying from April to September. The butterflies seen toward the beginning of the year are lighter in color than those seen later and blend well with the color of early plants.
Meet the Viceroy. Not the prettiest nor most colorful butterfly but it is the state butterfly of Kentucky.
Though it looks much like a Monarch there are distinct differences. Viceroys do not migrate. They overwinter as 1st or 2nd instar larvae, rolled up in a leaf of their host plant (willow or poplar).
Viceroys also have a distinctive black line across their postmedian hind wing.
A Viceroy's flight is faster and more erratic. Not at all like the Monarch's "flap, flap, glide" pattern.
