How is your sense of creativity? Is there anyone willing to step away from the orderly, cute and pretty?

I have been making amigurumi style toys for years but have always been horrified by the wicked cost of postage. I have decided, my apologies to anyone who is already doing this, to make some flat ones to fit in an ordinary envelope.

These toys, FLATTIES, are crocheted or knitted and never designed to be stuffed. They have some 3D characture but mainly look like they have been run over by a truck, a sort of amigurumi roadkill. For those not interested in crochet or knitting I have made corn doll style toys, but made from yarn, PLAITTIES, also flat enough to fit in an envelope. They can be small people (flatmates if you are English), animals, flowers, whatever takes your fancy.

Warning: they are ugly, there are no patterns and no rules. Just make your choice of flattie or plaittie and send it to one partner. Enclose an extra if you want, maybe a postcard of where your Flattie was run down.

This swap is not about perfect craft, just amusement. I used wool to make mine but any yarn will be fine. Decorate them if you want.

Flaking will make me cry and I cry ugly.

What a great idea! Wish I had time to play around and see if I could make an even half decent Plaittie! Maybe sometime in the future! Very clever!

Half decent is fine by me, many experiments have surprisingly good results.

What a fantastic idea! I need to try making something!!!

can't crochet so looking at making one from yarn. I have been wracking my brains since I signed up - should think before I leap in!!! I am stumped unless I can wind it round pipecleaners. If not....well, don't really know.

Kay 09/18/2011 #

I hadn't thought of that. Winding yarn around pipecleaners would give them a 3D aspect once they were out of the envelope.

Well, I hope they really don't have to be "ugly." I just made some little flat animals for a nephew, and they are stinkin' cute!

Kay 09/24/2011 #

No, ugly is a state of mind. It is just I can't do "cute". I do admire those who can.

I love this idea! It's great for the first time amigurumi style creature maker (like me). If it ends up looking like road kill, all the better! Great idea for saving on postage too!
