Description:

While brushing up on collage terminology today, I came across this wild, new-to-me term: cubomania.

"Cubomania is a surrealist method of making collages in which a picture or image is cut into squares and the squares are then reassembled without regard for the image." A rearrangement of one image creating an entirely new image.

NEAT! Let's make a postcard in this style.

The image - person, place, thing, animal, mineral, vegetable (just no symbols, patterns or design motifs; let's keep these visually interesting) and the uniform size of the squares are up to you (knock yourself out if you're willing to go tiny, but I'd suggest 1/4" or larger). You'll be using one image only, so be sure to pick one that is large enough to be turned in to a mailable postcard.

Once your cubomania postcard is complete, mail it naked to your partner. Don't forget to include your Swap-bot ID and the name of the swap somewhere on your card.

Mhhh probably stupid question but the postcard doesn't have to be made out of another postcard, right ? It can be any image that is postcard size ?

I can't believe I've never heard of this before. Sounds like fun, and I'm going to mark it WATCH for now 'cuz I'm on a borrowed laptop and I Do Not Like these keyboards~~!

As i understand it, The original picture can be larger so you would not then use each square.

Great idea for a swap, Steph! A variant on it which can be entertaining is to use a random-number generator to determine the order of the squares.

I'm planning on either finding a picture the appropriate size (I usually like 5x7 for postcards) or cutting the main focal point of a larger image (like a full magazine page) down to that size, then it'll get cut into squares and rearranged and glued to a heavyweight paper. Does that make sense? (I'm phone typing and ffeel your pain, Eepy)

Hey guys, I just got done with my first try at cubomania - made just like I described in my comment above:

(click on the pic to see it full-size)

It was fun! And it's pretty neat seeing what you can do with just an image (and some glue, a ruler and paper cutter, heh).

I like the concept expressed at wikipedia ...

Cubomania can "subvert the enslaving 'message' of advertising and to free images from repressive contexts."

Anyone cutting up political ads?

I love this! I too had never heard it. What an awesome idea for a swap. Political ads...love that idea too. :-)

Ok no not the buddah! Still looks cool though ... I think I'd have a hard time cutting an image I like into unidentifiable bits... I ESP love the one on your flickr with 6 squares though!

Thanks, Tera :) I've had the Buddha image for awhile - it was time for it to get used in something. This technique is a really good way to use up those larger images you just don't know what to do with.

This sounds like a mixed up mosaic... Fun! Thanks for hosting!

@Angie I did a political ad - but used the nice looking part of it... Then I decided my 1" squares were too big, so I made another one not using a political ad.
