Magic Yarn Ball (US)
Swap Coordinator:user4512 (contact)
Swap categories: Random Items  Knitting  Crocheting
Number of people in swap:37
Location:Other
Type:None
Last day to signup/drop:January 31, 2007
Date items must be sent by:February 10, 2007
Number of swap partners:1
Description:

Have you ever heard of or tried a magic yarn ball? If not, you're in for some good surprises!

And itÒ€ℒs so simple, itÒ€ℒs brilliant. Basically, you wrap cool little treasures up in a ball of yarn, and give it as a gift. As the recipient crafts with the yarn the treasures fall out one by one, and they discover the fun as they knit or crochet.

The end product will probably look like a piece of abstract art, with odds and ends poking out.

Magic Yarn Balls must be sent by February 10, 2007. There is no theme for this swap. Check out your partner's profile to see what he/she likes and if they have any allergies.

Even though this isn't a themed swap, it does occur pretty close to Valentine's Day. If you want to include something--or even make your yarn ball themed--related to Valentine's Day that's fine. Other than that, anything goes!

Rules:

NO ACRYLIC YARN!! Choose something that is wool, cotton, silk or a combination. Please use a whole skein/hank and where possible include the band so your partner knows what they have got. Contents should value approx $15 or equivalent exluding postage and the cost of the yarn. This is the US version of the Magic Yarn Ball Swap (there's already a European version).

Due to so many people abusing Swap-bot for their own personal gain and not fulfilling their end of the swap, you must have a minimum rating of 4.5 to participate. Contact me if you are in process of getting your rating changed and explain the situation.

However, if you're new to Swap-bot you won't have a rating. To participate, you must have a valid email (I will be checking) and your profile must be filled out when you sign up. If I am unable to contact you prior to the end of sign up, you will not be allowed to participate. We really need to be sure that everyone plays fair, right?

Watch out for swappers who sign up then change their identity and flake out on all swaps.... I had a few sneak into my swaps!

user5534 01/ 4/2007 #

I'm new...but not a changed identity or anything...just new:)

I'd love to do this, I have done similar swaps on other boards and love them! I knit and crochet and love to try new yarns, and the unraveling is always such a surprise, it really motivates me to get through the yarn ball.

DaCraftyLady 01/17/2007 #

I'm new too and I am me!!! If that makes sense. I am looking forward to these swaps so I hope there aren't any flakes? I do group swaps with my book, knit, crochet, and pen pal groups and sometimes people flake out but most are there and follow through, and those are membership only swaps, so I guess you just have to take a chance. Now I want to ask a question about this swap. Do we rewind the thread around little items to make the ball with surprises inside? What a really cute idea...Love it...

Wierdlings 01/18/2007 #

I am absolutely new to this site. I was awestruck at how many people do this across the country and around the world. I would love to participate as my favorite hobby is to knit. I will write to the coordinator this evening and hopefully join up as well!

Yeah! ~Wierdlings

user5790 01/20/2007 #

Just signed up love to knit/felt, but I'm clueless as to what to do next, I can handle the cute ball Yarn , & goodies no problem, but how about a walk through who do I send to little incidentals etc. Please help- knit-me-together

WillowTree21 01/21/2007 #

KnitmetogetherPsalm139:13, I am new to Swap-bot too, however I have set about 4 or 5 swaps, I am not in this swap but I saw you had a question and maybe I could help.

On the evening of Jan 31st, check back into Swap-bot. When you come to this swap it will have another link for you to click which says something along the lines of "see you partner". Click it and in my case another screen comes up with the partners information on it. This is the person you will be sending to, however it does not always mean they have your name. This way it keeps a little excitement going. You can then click to see all the people in this swap and find your partners name .... thus you will see their likes, dislikes etc. Ten days "after" the deadline (in this case Feb 10th)to have your swap sent out, you will then have another part that will rate your partner visa versa. I hope that helped :) I had many of the same questions at first and got it all in bits and pieces, much better explained all at once :)

user5790 01/22/2007 #

Thanks alot willowtree makes perfect sense now thanks for taking the time to explain it to me
greatful, knit me together

silver2knit 01/24/2007 #

I just signed up -- this will be my first swap! What a great idea -- I'm in charge of the games for our Spinning & Weaving guild and can see this becoming one of them -- maybe with a little twist (like you have to use the treasures in whatever you make from the yarn!) Who ever thought of this is very creative!

Winnie 01/24/2007 #

Why dont you make this swap international? Snif, Rest of america also exist.

user5896 01/25/2007 #

I am new to swap bot! I am so glad to have found it. This will be my first yarn swap. I did a christmas ornament swap, but not thru swap bot. I can't wait to get shopping!

Wierdlings 01/28/2007 #

GAH! I hate waiting waiting.. I am so ready and hyped for this, but I have to wait until I get my partner to find out what they like, allergies, etc... Le sigh..

Back to waiting! ~Wierdlings

user4462 01/28/2007 #

this sounds like fun but was in the hospital and had some swaps I couldnt get to though had written to my partners so all know they are coming and have all agreed to change the no send ratings. I cant sign up for anything right now because I need to meet my prior obligations but if you do this one again I would love to do it. My rating right now is still above 4 but have the prior obligations or else I would feel right.

Cakers 01/28/2007 #

Darn - just realized I've overcommitted myself. Need to drop from this one now but will do one in the future. They look really cool! Have fun everyone!

user3645 01/30/2007 #

This swap sounds fun but I have alot of commitments to follow through on.

Has everyone had great experiences with partners actually paying attention to your likes and dislikes? That is a big concern for me when signing up for these types of swaps. I guess I have had some bad luck. Sorry to sound so cynical. I just pay close attention to my partner's profile.

Hopefully this swap will come back again and I can sign up.

WillowTree21 01/30/2007 #

Katy I sent you swap-bot mail about joining.

Thank you, Rebecca aka Willow Tree

Wierdlings 01/31/2007 #

Tonight is the night!!!!

I can finally go shopping at the yarn store.. wheee!

WillowTree21 02/ 1/2007 #

I was so discombobulated this morning that I hit the send button by mistake, I will repost when it "does" go out. Forgive my mind, I try to alot! LOL

DaCraftyLady 02/ 1/2007 #

Wierdlings 02/10/2007 #

Ya know.. I just realized my MYB partner has never contacted me. I am in the Winter Scarf Swap too and just didn't realize that 'this' swaps person never contacted me. Perhaps it will be a surprise. I do love surprises!

~The Wondering Wierdling

Neenbug 02/10/2007 #

Thank you Dianna for the magic yarn ball! Gorgeous yarn, can't wait to start knitting so I can find the goodies!

user5790 02/12/2007 #

i was never contacted either, still hopefully waiting in DE

user5943 02/12/2007 #

I got mine today. The yarn was pretty, but the wound up contents were rather anticlimatic :( I'm having a hard time believing that it came close to amounting to at least $15. I'll post a pic to the slideshow shortly.

user5943 02/13/2007 #

click launch slide show above, it's the 3rd pic, before/after

DaCraftyLady 02/13/2007 #

I got my package today!!!! It was so great. I unwound the whole yarn ball as I couldn't wait to see all my surprises. Wow I got some really cool things, candy dish, heart, stickers, ornament, bath soak, bottle cap necklace and charms, glitter LOVE on sheer ribbon, key of happiness, and some red beads that I actually need. I got it all wrapped in beautiful ribbon and a pretty little neting bag.I love it all...Thank you sooooooooooooo much see it on http://www.flickr.com/photos/55681224@N00/

DaCraftyLady 02/13/2007 #

I need to thank Tradion Mom for my package.... :)Loved the yarn too....

user5867 02/13/2007 #

Flawfulfibers, I'm sorry you didn't like your swap. It was indeed $15 worth of stuff, but I'd be happy to try again if you'll tell me what sorts of things you'd like to see in a magic yarn ball.

user4534 02/13/2007 #

Hi Kathleen, sorry, don't know what to tell you :(, if I tell you what to put in it, then it kind of defeats the purpose, you know what I mean? Thanks anyway for your willingness to try again. Maybe one of the others can give you some tips/pointers or whatever on what to put in one. Or do a search for MYBs through flickr to get a better idea, if this was your first one.

user5943 02/13/2007 #

oops, sorry that post was from me, I was logged in under my other addy. (I signed up twice because I loved doing these MYBs)

Wierdlings 02/13/2007 #

Hehe... all the stuff I bought could not fit in my ball.. so I left many of the items out and hope my partner understands.

I just did not want to bend some of the items either. HECK! I guess 220 yards just isn't enough yarn... I will know better the next time.. hehe!

~Wierdlings

Wierdlings 02/14/2007 #

Guinifer....

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love it all, I wish I was able to take a picture and show everyone the lovely things you hid in that yarn ball! Now I see how I should have done it.. ::slaps forehead::

I love the lil keychain skein.. I had to fight my cat to get it back once it took off with it.

See you on the LnV boards and thank you again!

Happy V'day!

~Wierdlings

WillowTree21 02/14/2007 #

Flawfulfibers aka Tisjewel_art,

How does that work? I mean if swap-bot pulls "flawfulfibers" to send to tisjewel_art? And Pulls someone else to send to "flawfulfibers" then doesnt that mean you really aren't sending to anyone? I doubt this has happened, but it's possible, right?

fairykiss 02/14/2007 #

If you have 2 accounts (and are honest!!) it works out ok. If you get your own name once, and then someone elses name it just means you have one partner because you 1. send to yourself and then 2. send to the other partner. it sorta cancels eachother out.

DeeBee 02/14/2007 #

Don't know who sent to me yet, b/c I don't have the rating option yet, but I want to say WOW - THANKS!!! Got it yesterday, and had FUN FUN FUN. I have your return address, I just don't recognize you yet with the emails on this swap. You'll be getting a HEART from me!!

user4534 02/14/2007 #

Willow Tree, it's like what fairykiss said. There's three scenarios - 1) swap-bot partners me up twice with myself (i.e. tisjewelart sends to flawfulfibers, flawfulfibers sends to tisjewelart), which is not likely to happen, in which case nothing happens; 2) one of my ids gets partnered up with the other and the other one gets partnered up with someone else, which means that I send one out and receive one; 3) which is what I was hoping for - each gets a different partner, so I send out two and receive two (though so far I've sent out 2 and recieved the one, waiting on the other to get over her flu so she can send it out).

But I can say I probably won't do it again, lol! As it's becoming a downer.

nifferjjl1980 02/14/2007 #

Come and join us at the Project Spectrum swap! IF you dont know what it is, here's the website that will explain it to you!

http://www.lollygirl.com/blog/?p=585

Wierdlings 02/15/2007 #

Gah.... I hate spammers! NifferJJL just did that at the Witner Scarf Swap too.

::mutters::

BTW, haven't seen either of my partners here or for the Scarf swap say they have received their package. Sent it out UPS 2day on Sat and neither has stated they received it yet. Last time I pay to have that stuff sent express like that.. cost $30.00 alone.

::pout::

shaynafay 02/15/2007 #

Received my yarn ball from NifferJJL yesterday. What a great Valentines Day gift. Lots of great stuff! I'll post before and after pics later today. The little sheep is a measuring tape! Wow! Thanks!

WillowTree21 02/15/2007 #

Tonya, I wanted you to know I received your MYB today. I loved it all! I am not well today so I will show my excitement soon. <3 Love the vintage sewing book, I did post photo of it (rather a scan of it, I mean) to flickr. Thanks a bunch hun! :)

harleychick27 02/15/2007 #

Hi!

I am anxious to receive mine as well. My partner says she sent in on the 8th so maybe mail is a tad slow with the poor weather conditions in some areas?? Can't wait, will post pix when it arrives... :O)

fairykiss 02/15/2007 #

Kiki, I had a problem with it coming back to me (I dont think I put the right zip code on it) so I resent with a delivery confirmation #. My mom got hers today that I sent the same day so it might just be slow because of all the snow. If you would like that # I can email it to you.

Mimiwonton 02/15/2007 #

Gettin kind of sad around here :-(. Haven't heard anything or gotten anything from my partner yet and it's almost a week past send date. I also sent out my package on the 8th and haven't heard from recipient whether she's gotten it or not! Hope I'm not burned again...my last swap was a bummer. Finally got something over 2 weeks past send date and the majority of the contents were pictures cut from magazines. Still hoping!

user5896 02/15/2007 #

fairykiss, did you get your package yet? i sent it out last saturday and have been checking your blog to see if you received it yet. i hope you like everything.

user2638 02/15/2007 #

Cath! I got mypackage yesterday and I am posting about it right now at my blog.

Thank you so much for the very fun stuff you wrapped in there. Guinifer

red curls: I did just get it. Thank you so much! I love that cotton yarn and will make the pattern you sent.

I am currently enjoying the wonderful socks and lipgloss! Thanks bunchs!!

nifferjjl1980 02/16/2007 #

I'm not a spammer! I wanted people to join my swap! Sorry. Didn't realize I shouldn't do that. Anyway, I'm glad you liked your stuff Shaynafay. I loved that measuring tape. I t hought it was so cute!

fairykiss 02/16/2007 #

Kiki, the USPS website says that the package was sitting at Exeter (if you have any idea where that is)this morning at 6 am so I hope you get it today, if you would please let me know. Thanks and i hope you like it!!

user4534 02/16/2007 #

Hmm... Well I got my package from Aurora today. I surfing through the slideshow gallery and came to realize that a bit of the stuff that willow tree sent her she put in my ball... I don't know what to think about that.

silver2knit 02/17/2007 #

Amberli, Got the yarn -- it's very pretty and soft. I'm going to knit a scarf to see what you put in it -- and am looking forward to the discovery.

Thanks!

user5790 02/17/2007 #

Where is that darn cat??? still hopeful;( Jessica

harleychick27 02/17/2007 #

Hi fairykiss!

Rec'd the yarn ball yesterday--very pretty yarn and nice treats, I'll post a picture, thank you! :O)

Mimiwonton 02/18/2007 #

What happened to the low rated swappers being banned? Mine has a 2 something (19 no-sends!!!) and guess what?.....I didn't get anything! She should have been banned before the partner assignments.

Paula 02/18/2007 #

Kiki, if you sent the yarn, it never arrived.

Sorry swap-bot couldn't give you a little variety.

Paula

harleychick27 02/18/2007 #

Hi Peety!

My husband sent it last Saturday as my son and I were sick all last week. I wouldn\'t think it would take six mail days to go from NH to GA but I have noticed that it is taking forever for me to receive things. I will scan the receipt so that you can see it was, in fact, mailed to you.

Sorry swap-bot didn\'t give you more variety as well. :O)

harleychick27 02/18/2007 #

Hi!

I\'m posting two photos to the gallery--the first is the yarn ball I rec\'d, thank you fairykiss!! The second is the yarn ball I sent to Peety. Don\'t peek Peety! I feel badly that she hasn\'t rec\'d it yet but also don\'t want my fellow swappers to think I didn\'t send one!! :O)

user5790 02/19/2007 #

That darn cat hasn\'t shown up with a yarn ball for me either. bummer of a 1st taste of swapbot. i guess no more for me.. Jessica

Mimiwonton 02/20/2007 #

Don\'t blame you knitmetogether. This is the second one I\'ve gotten burned on in just 3 months. I did at least get something from the other one...but it was really late and the contents were mostly kid\'s bubble gum trading cards and pictures cut out of a magazine...what use are those? On the bright side, I have gotten 3 awesome ones....so....do I stay in or get out?

user5790 02/20/2007 #

mimiwonton- i\'d b willing to do any unofficial myb w/ you since it seems were the ones who got burned. email me if you\'re game and we can set up the details jessica

shaynafay 02/20/2007 #

RoseHueGlasses, let me know if you have received the Magic Yarn Ball I sent. It shouldn\'t take more than 2 weeks to travel from Northern California to Southern California. I am going to see if there\'s some way to track it.

Mimiwonton 02/20/2007 #

JackieinMI Still haven\'t heard whether you got your package yet. Mailed it on the 8th so it definately should have been there before now. Please acknowledge whether you got anything or not!

harleychick27 02/20/2007 #

I have participated in several swaps on swap-bot, most of them recently, and was under the impression that if your package was sent any day during the \'send by\' period it isn\'t \'late\'. I did, for the first time, send this yarn ball on the last \'send by\' date, 2/10, and had no control over how it long it took the PO to deliver it. It makes me sad that although my partner rec\'d it today, and wrote some nice things in the feedback section, she said that it was \'late\'. Technically I do not think it can be called \'late\' as I sent it within the required time frame. Am I mistaken?

Neenbug 02/20/2007 #

No you are not mistaken. Some people get impatient and think you should mail it out the second the partners name is drawn. If you sent it by the send date I would not consider that late. Late is when you get absolutely nothing. It is nice to get feedback too. I have had 4 swaps where I was not given feedback or even an acknowledgement of some sort to let me know they received it. A lot of time and effort goes into this, it is nice to know if it is appreciated!

fairykiss 02/22/2007 #

I even give people a few days after the \"send out\" date because honestly what is just a few days. What I think a 3 rating for late should be something like a postmark several days or weeks late. I understand that.

Also, sometimes you just can\'t help how fast the post runs or if they damage something or even lose it.

DaCraftyLady 02/23/2007 #

shanalee , I have emailed you to see if my Magic Yarn Ball got there and have not heard from you???? Did my package arrive there yet? I know with the bad weather there was a delay but it has been awhile ...Please let me know...::::

WillowTree21 02/25/2007 #

http://www.flickr.com/groups/whole-lotta-swappa/

if you want to, you can click for an invite, but send admins something that will help us see you have the 5 ratio. Perhaps copy and paste. :)

Neenbug 02/28/2007 #

Guess what. No acknowledgement of receipt of the yarn ball I sent out. I also see she is a no send. It's really crappy that a lot of effort goes into this and you send out a great package and that person does not send one out. What a cheat and thief.

Mimiwonton 02/28/2007 #

mustanggirl I know how you feel! I got nothing on this swap and the person I sent to is a no-sender that has not acknowledged receipt of the one I sent either...double whammy bad deal for me on both ends with this swap!

harleychick27 03/ 1/2007 #

That is a bummer mustanggirl and Mimiwonton. Although the concept of swap-bot is a cool one, I have been disappointed in many of the swaps in which I've particiapated for various reasons. I love swapping as it pushes me to be creative, I guess I work best under pressure, but I don't think I'm going to continue for much longer. There are a couple of swaps in March that I still want to do but I think I'll take a break after that. The most frustrating thing is that swap-bot changed the partner assignment process so that the swap coordinator has the opportunity to check people's profiles and give them the boot before she/he assigns partners. In most swaps I've noticed that not one person has been dropped, even when she/he has multiple no-sends. Every coordinator states the rules of the swap--minimum rating needed to participate, profile filled out if you're new etc and then everyone who signs up for the swap, good, bad or ugly, seems to stay in the swap. Hopefully, this will not be the case in the future! :O)

Mimiwonton 03/ 2/2007 #

I hope it's not the case too, Kiki! I am hosting a swap right now and I certainly did make sure that everyone met the rating requirements or, if new, had a complete profile filled out! I've gotten burned twice and considered stopping for a while too, but my last one was awesome... so am going to go for a few in March and see what happens!

Neenbug 03/ 3/2007 #

I'm still in also. The good still far outweighs the bad!!! I understand some people get sick, etc... just let your patrner know. A late package is better than none at all.

Neenbug 03/ 6/2007 #

Guess what? I received a rating! All is well!
