Description:

For this swap we will send our partner one painting we painted ourselves.

If you've never painted before or are a little rusty, don't shy away! This swap is designed with you in mind (and that includes me!) with the idea that hopefully, creating a smaller painting will be less daunting than a large scale work... something to get your feet wet.

Anyone interested in painting and who meets the following requirements is welcome to join.

Participant Requirements

  • U.S. only. If you would like to start an international version of this swap, please be my guest!
  • No newbies... there is enough time between now (June 26) and the signup date to get rated in at least one real mail swap.
  • 4.8 rating or higher with no no-sends within the past 3 months.
  • Any skill or experience level is welcome :)

Painting Requirements

  • Your painting must be on stretched canvas (not on canvas board, cardboard, paper, etc.). Relatively inexpensive pre-stretched canvases can be bought at most fine arts or crafts stores like Michael's, Jo-Ann, Utrecht, Dick Blick, etc. (Example: http://www.dickblick.com/zz071/47/ or http://www.dickblick.com/zz071/35/ )
  • Your painting should be a minimum size of 2.5" x 3.5" (ATC size) or 3" x 3". You're more than welcome to send a larger painting, for example 4" x 4" or 6" x 8", etc.
  • Subject is sender's choice, but do not paint something that could be viewed as offensive or religious if your partner does not share your beliefs.
  • Please put some time and effort into your work and have fun!

Rating

  • Keep in mind that some (or most) of the people in this swap may have little or no experience with painting. Rate a 5 if you receive a painting and it meets or exceeds the requirements whether you like it or deem it worthy as art.
  • The minimum size requirement is there to aid artists who aren't yet comfortable painting on larger canvases. If you would be unhappy receiving an ATC sized or 3" squared painting, I suggest that you do not join this swap.

Packaging

I personally have never sent or received paintings on canvas, but I think there are only 2 ways to go about this:

  • Ship in a sturdy box or
  • Ship in a padded envelope with lots of cardboard in front of and behind the painting.

If I am wrong and/or missing something, please let me know.

For Hearts

  • If you'd like to try for a heart you could send a significantly larger painting, cater your painting to your partner's profile, send more than one painting, or include a profile surprise.

I hope everything is clear. If it isn't, please message me or post a comment below and I'll get back to you as soon as I can! :)

Thanks for joining and happy swapping!

Edit: Please note that this swap will most likely take some time to complete. Do not sign up if you will not be able to commit a sufficient amount of time to your painting. Also, do not sign up if you don't intend to rate your partner!

where do you buy an atc stretched canvas? i've never seen one that small.. I've seen 5X7 canvas board..

ladydy5 06/27/2008 #

How about doing it on canvas board if we do it that small.

LaceD2sugarDoll - I've seen small stretched canvases online (please see the first site under Painting Requirements) and at a fine art supplies store I used to go to called Top Notch Art & Frame. I'm not sure what the selection of stretched canvases is like at Michael's and Joann, but I'd imagine that fine art supplies stores would definitely carry some smaller canvases. ATC size/3" squared is the size minimum so you're welcome to do a larger painting.

I know before you were interested in doing watercolor. Stretched watercolor canvases like these: http://www.dickblick.com/zz071/27/ would be acceptable for this swap. The downside to these is that they're a little harder to find and they aren't made in smaller sizes.

ladydy5 - I'm sorry, but the requirement of a stretched canvas still stands. My reasons for this are 1) stretched canvases can be easily hung on a wall as is without being framed (just a couple nails or pushpins for smaller paintings), 2) they are more gallery worthy/special somehow, 3) I like the added dimension the sides bring... it's fun to paint them too.

I hope I've answered your questions thoroughly enough and I'm sorry for any inconveniences you experience due to my requirements.

I forgot to add that if you want you can include a canvas board painting as an extra, but your main painting should be on stretched canvas.

Jerrys Artarama has an online sale right now through Aug 8, 2008 for stretched canvases. There are no 2.5 x 3.5, but they have 2x3, and 3x4 and up.

The sale is on 6 packs of Paramount 3/4" cotton canvases with the staples in the back--nice quality! The 3" x 4" ones are 6/$6.99

Hi everyone, I've edited the send by date to Saturday, September 6 since the 1st is Labor Day and I'm pretty sure the post office will be closed. I decided to make it the 1st rather than the 2nd because the weekend would be most convenient for those of you who have to work. Sorry for the mishap!
