Mini eclectic magpie journal ...

ec·lec·tic əˈklektik/ adjective 1. deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.

For this swap, we will be creating or using a purchased small journal to record and share 7 days. You will need to have a 2 Page spread for each day, as well as an intro/starting page, and a cover of some kind if you make your own. Finished size should be no smaller than 3 1/2" X 5 1/2".

If you choose to make your journal, please do not be intimidated if you've not done this before. It does not need to be fancy! The more random and perfectly imperfect, the better. That is what gives it character! Use heavy cardstock, scrapbook papers, clean cardboard from packaging, junk mail, envelopes, old book pages, etc. to create your journal. You can bind your journal in any way you wish. Make it accordian style, or bind with a clip, or pretty ribbon, or binder rings. Whatever you like, as long as it holds it all together.

You will then begin working in your journal! Begin by using the first page as an intro page. You can write directly on the page or maybe create a pocket. You will put your swap-bot ID and the name of the swap. You can also write something to your partner if you wish. Then you will create 2 pages for each day, for 7 days.

Your pages can contain anything you wish! Use your imagination and creativity. Use paints, ink, rubber stamping, doodling, drawing, collage, etc. Add meaningful words, poetry, song lyrics, a recipe, or write something about your day. Add in bits and pieces of things from your day like a receipt, pretty candy wrapper, something you found in your travels, a random photo from your day, etc.

You may also choose to include a few little goodies as tuck-ins (washi samples, a small crafting supply you love, factory sealed tea bag of what you enjoyed that day, handmade tag, etc) This is completely up to you, and is not a requirement.

The 7 days you record, can be any 7 days. Journal whenever you find the time. I'm giving lots of time on this swap, so we won't be too stressed, and have plenty of time to do our 7 days. Since it can be any days you wish, you can start working on it right away.

Recap:

  • Create or purchase a small journal, as above
  • Must have an intro page
  • Must have a cover of some kind if handmade
  • Decorate 2 pages each for 7 days of your choice

The idea of this swap is to share 7 days with our partner, and to maybe try some things we haven't done before. The style is meant to be as loose and casual as we wish. We are all at different levels in our journaling and in our creative experiences. You do not need to be an artist. You just need to put some thought and time into creating something nice for your partner.

If you receive a journal with an intro page, and 7 days with 2 page spreads for each day, kindly rate your lovely partner a 5. Hearts are up to you.

If you have any questions, or need help with anything, I'm available always. You can PM me or post below :)

I've never done this type of a craft before, so I hope my partner takes this into consideration. I'm looking forward to trying this! :)

@windyacres part of what I like about this, is kind of stretching our creativity and trying things we haven't before :) We all have difference experience and levels of craft. The main thing is to just put a bit of time into your pages. They don't need to be fancy or super artistic. I'm glad you're giving it a try!

Is it OK if some days take up more than 2 pages or are we striçkly limited to two pages for each day?

sassafrass 05/ 9/2015 #

@honeyblossom if you want to do more than 2, that's fine :) If you do the required 2 pages and feel like continuing with that day, go for it! As long as you have at least 2 pages for each day, it's all good

Is it okay to repurpose a used book of the appropriate size, if I can find it? I'm think that I can alter the cover and gesso the pages so that I can write on top. Would that work?

sassafrass 05/13/2015 #

@breathingoxygen yes absolutely that will work :) Great idea too

@sassafrass - I ended up finding a cute journal to alter. But good to know for next time. Thanks! :)
