Description:

I have been contemplating making my first prayer shawl or quilt, and I can think of no better way to begin than to make one for the members of Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Would anyone else like to join me?

People of all faiths and all spiritual persuasions, including those of no particular persuasion, are welcome to make a meditative knitted, crocheted, sewn, quilted or knotted/ tatted shawl, scarf, or small quilt to be sent to the congregation of Emanuel AME for their use as they heal from a terrorist attack on their sacred space. As you create, please feel free to pray, meditate, contemplate and wish for their spiritual home to once again feel like a safe space, for an end to violence, for the healing of injustices, or for deeper connection and compassion with this group of people. Please enclose a brief note of love and support with your creation and mail it to: Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 110 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401.

If you have never heard of kantha shawls from India, they provide loads of fun quilting ideas for shawls. I also like pojagi from Korea -- tradition of wraps for carrying various items. Pojagi pictured here.
