It doesn't get any easier than this to create fun, colorful polka-dot envelopes!

You will have 2 partners and you will decorate 2 mailable size envelopes for each partner.

Supplies needed (see notes below):

  • pencils with unused erasers on them (edited: you may use rubberstamps if you have them with dot shapes)
  • dye ink pads, in assorted colors
  • plain white envelopes

Instructions:

The pencil erasers will be used like rubber stamps. Tap the eraser onto the ink pad and then onto your envelope. Do this several times with one color all over the envelope. Then grab a second pencil and a new color ink pad and do it again. Use at least 3 colors on each envelope.

Sender's choice on dot colors. You can even start creating your dots now. :)

Edited: It's now optional if you would like to further enhance your "stamped" dots. If you want to doodle in them, or enhance them another way, go for it. But please know that the minimum required is to "stamp" them only and if you're partner didn't enhance them like you did, she should not be rated down for it. Mostly - have fun with this and send something you would be happy to receive.

Notes:

  • Check your local thrift stores for new pencils. I recently got 18 the other day for 99 cents. The Dollar store is another option (I think they come in packages of 10).

  • Be on the lookout for envelopes at thrift stores too. I often find packages or boxes of them for really cheap.

  • Dye ink pads are best because they dry instantly. Pigment ink pads stay wet and you dry them with a heat gun.

Lastly, here's a link to a tutorial I found. They used another kind of ink. polka dot envelopes

Edited: Lastly #2, please decorate your mailing envelopes (the one you adhere your postage stamps to) with dots too. These dots can be in other forms (stickers, drawn on, or "stamped" too).

Ooh, this sounds fun!

Juliajae 01/29/2016 #

Can I use a template and make dots different colors and is it ok to doodle them or just straight up dots?

ArtyBeth3 01/30/2016 #

@Juliajae if you want to use a template that's fine and if you want to doodle them that's fine too; just know that your partner may not do the same for you. Another swap could be set up for "Doodled Dot" envies. LOL. So many ideas... :)

Originally I set this up to use the pencil erasers as rubber stamps. However, as questions have come up, feel free to use actual rubber stamps of dots, stencils, etc. to make your dots. :)
