Description:

Many of us out there would LOVE to swap dotee dolls but feel inadequate or worry that we won't be able to make a good enough doll well...

Here's your chance!

AGAIN!

Make your doll knowing these things...

Anyone who signs up for this swap is either in the same boat as you, or is a seasoned dotee swapper who remembers how they felt when they apprehensively made their first dotee doll.

Here is where it's going to be okay if it's a baby only a mother could love!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_SlCwCYcsU

Here is a Clickable Link

that shows you step-by-step how to make your doll.

Here's what you need to know...

Make your doll with any theme... she's YOUR baby, YOUR creation, let YOUR imagination take his/her form.

She'll need a face that can be hand drawn with markers, embroidered with floss, or painted. It can even be clay!

She'll need a stuffed cloth body.

She'll need some form of hanger be it beads, ribbon, yarn, metal or what have you.

She'll need a tail.

Dotee should be 3-6" in length or thereabouts.

The materials you use are up to you, and your imagination.

For this swap you do NOT have to look at your partner's profile for likes/dislikes as you need to be left to your own creativity but feel very free to do so.

Sending a dotee that falls under your partner's likes/dislikes will be how you earn a heart as going that extra yard is what hearts are all about.

If you want ideas then look at each others profiles, flickr accounts and ask all the questions you want!

This is where the seasoned gals can help new gals get started making their dolls!

Goodness knows we can never have too many dotee doll makers on swap-bot!

Since dotee is so light weight and easy to mail this swap is International.

Feel free to do a USA only swap for this as well though.

You will send one doll to one partner.

I'm putting the sign-up date for the day after my first Beginner Dotee swap send-by date and the send by date for this one 1 month after the last date to sign up to give LOTS of time to work on your doll for the swap.

Ladies! for those who have made at least one dotee doll in the past, it'd be super neat-o if you'd post a picture of your very first dotee doll (no matter how good or bad she turned out) or your very favorite doll you've made or received in the comments section rather you sign-up for the swap or not!

I just know we're all going to have such awesome experiences with this swap! Everyone is already thinking SO creatively! It's nice having a place to practice and not have to worry that because yours is 'different' that someone is going to rate you down. What's different here just might become your 'signature style' dotee!

Remember... it's not the material you choose to use, it's not the face you choose to use, it's not the way you choose to bead or embellish that will get you your 5... it's that you DO IT! The only way to get rated down here is to just NOT do it at all and that will of course get you a 1 and get your partner an angeled dotee which yes they'll love because I have already got angeled dolls lined up but this is your chance to try it in an arena where nobody will criticize how you make your doll but you.

In addition to that, if you're truly unhappy with what you get, PLEASE email me! Rate your partner their 5 for having made and sent their doll, give them a wonderful THANK YOU! (without ANY criticism) and then let me get a doll to you that you WILL be thrilled with okay? I LOVE the little ugly babies of the world but I do understand that not everyone does and that's OKAY! The whole plan here, is to just make sure that EVERYONE walks away with a prize to cherish handmade with love by someone else.

Hi Cheryll I couldn't resist! I had to sign up for this one too. I'm having so much fun with the first one!

CherylLaVon 10/24/2008 #

Miranda

Miranda, my very first dotee doll. Born on 9/6/8. I made her for a swap on swap-bot. Lynnie is her new mommy's name. Her new mommy lives in Florida and likes green so I decided to have Miranda go trick-or-treating as a mermaid. The shiny red peeking out under Miranda's seashell is a rhinestone heart. The charm hanging off of her tail says "Love much" on one side and "Laugh Often" on the other. It's something I want people to remember to do because life is too short not to!

CherylLaVon 10/24/2008 #

YAY Stitches! I couldn't believe how many people were so truly happy and excited with the first round even though we've still got a lot of time left before that swap is closed and how many emails I received since then to please do it again!

I'm SO glad to see you joining in on the fun again!

Muriel 10/24/2008 #

I missed the first one so I'm very glad you did this again.

I got my very first dotee in the mail a couple of weeks ago and i have been itching to make one myself ever since.

CherylLaVon 10/24/2008 #

Glad to have you this go-round Muriel! I just know you'll be hooked from the get-go!

Sunshinesmiles 10/24/2008 #

Hooray! I am so glad you did this one! I am already hooked on them. they are so cute.

CherylLaVon 10/25/2008 #

Hooray Sunshine!! Welcome to my world... ever think you'd be addicted to silly dolls?

worxmama 10/25/2008 #

Thank You, for doing this swap again. Wow! So many signed up already! I can't wait! I told a friend and I think she's gonna give it a try too! I just went to the fabric store this morning and bought some fat quarters in anticipation that I would get to make a dotee! Yeah! I CAN'T WAIT ! Yeah!!!

CherylLaVon 10/25/2008 #

I know huh!I'm so excited to see that in less than 24 hours we already have 21 people signed up to play!

JoAnn fabrics had precut quarters on sale for 99 cents this afternoon when I went so I bought extras to play with! YAY!

Amyellabella 10/25/2008 #

I'm so in for this! I've been wondering if I could make one and this is the perfect forum to try- even if she doesn't come out so well!! The tutorial is really helpful though! :)

And Cheryl-- That was your first dotee?? She's amazing!

CherylLaVon 10/26/2008 #

Thanks @Amyellabella

It really isn't hard and is SO relaxing and fun!

heathertsosie 10/26/2008 #

I have become obsessed since the last round. My 3 year old sits up next to me each afternoon and says "you have to make a new dollie doll today". Then she picks the fabric and beads she'd like me to use. They never match so I don't usually use them - but perhaps for this one I will let her choose everything. I'm so excited to get started. Thanks for doing a second round!

CherylLaVon 10/26/2008 #

How VERY cool!

TerryF 10/26/2008 #

This is my first Dotee - I made her as a brooch, so she has no tail - this was long before the Dotee Doll craze ever started on SB!

makestuff 10/27/2008 #

TerryF - what a great dotee!!! I love her.

EmTabby 10/27/2008 #

oh yey another one! im deff in! :) please can someone let me know how to post a picture here and i'll be glad to show you my first attemped .....hehe seriusly no laughing allowed tho LOL xx

clydeesmom 10/27/2008 #

I HOPE MY PARTNER HAS A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR BECAUSE SEWING IS NOT MY FORTE. MY HUSBAND THINKS I'M LOSING IT. BUT WHAT FUN!

TerryF 10/28/2008 #

TO post a picture, use this code but remove the "spaces":

!space[]space(picture's url goes here)

You can find the url by right clicking on the photo and going to "Properties".

CherylLaVon 10/28/2008 #

She's awesome TerryF! I'm in a Dotee with a Twist swap where dotee is made into a brooch but I haven't made mine yet. Yours turned out SO pretty!

Tabby, if you can't get the picture thing figured out, you can post the URL and I'll throw the picture on there for ya! I can't wait to see!

LOL clydeesmom! I bet your doll is going to be really cute!

DelishDish 10/29/2008 #

Ok so at first I was there's no way I'm signing up for a swap I have to sew for! I was too scared, but A) the tutorial is awesome B) They are just so darn cute how could you not want to sign up!! and btw I LOVE the mermaid...I was thinking about my own right before I saw your mermaid pic and now I know the idea I had is perfect!! Shhhhh it's a secret for my partner!!

makestuff 10/29/2008 #

This was my first dotee I made earlier this year... she is one big face hahahaha

img

Other dotees I've made are here

daffodilgirl 10/29/2008 #

This is one of made. I am a very newbie and now i know how to make a basic one.. there is always room for experimentation and improvement on the way they look . But it is alot of fun.... I like a challenge

daffodilgirl 10/29/2008 #

CherylLaVon 10/29/2008 #

DelishDish I felt the exact same way!

tere1998 I LOVE HER! She has such a pretty face!

daffodilgirl those are really cute! The more I make the more embellished I want to make mine too!

daffodilgirl 10/29/2008 #

Im going to make some more today te he Just got a load of material from wallmart for 1.00 a yard

daffodilgirl 10/29/2008 #

These are so much fun... DO you think they are looking ok ?

CherylLaVon 10/30/2008 #

Your Wal~Mart has material? Most don't anymore.

Yep, they look great :)

Aren't they addicting?!?!

daffodilgirl 10/30/2008 #

Yes our wal-mart has tonz of material and sewing items. Like I said I went and raided the dollar rack lol It's amazing what you can find if you rummage.....

Yes they are addicting.

makestuff 10/30/2008 #

There is still 1 walmart by me (west side of metropolitan Phoenix) that still has fabric, but all the new stores do not. :( Honestly, I have a stash that would last me the rest of my life anyways!! hahaha and Joann's is 10 minutes away... unfortunately for my checking account!

CherylLaVon 10/30/2008 #

tere you're in Phoenix? I was born and raised there!

6805 N. 32nd Avenue was the house I was raised in :D

makestuff 10/31/2008 #

Hey Cheryl - I live in Peoria, a little west of Phoenix :) My family moved here in 1974. Small world!!

magicjessnrach 11/ 1/2008 #

This is my first dotee made in January of this year. She was sent to Lisajhoney.

One of my latest dotees was also sent to lisajhoney. I think my style has changed somewhat!

doublesided 11/ 1/2008 #

I just love all these Dotees - they are just amazing.

Im joining up again, how can I not!

jensquil 11/ 1/2008 #

Hi, I am new to swaps and making dolls. This looks like so much fun! I can't wait to start my doll.

AccentsByEddita 11/ 2/2008 #

Hi, I 'm new to swap bot and am super excited to be joining in on this swap! The video tutorial is great and I'm going through my stash and sketching some ideas....thanks for this great intro to Swap Bot and DOTEES! Can't wait to get the info on my swap partner! :)

FingersInc 11/ 2/2008 #

Ok, I've been gawking at other people's Dotees for quite a while now, and was concerned that my first one would be "weird" or something. So, thank you for hosting this swap for us "newbies" in the Dotee world. It is not like I need another craft to make...or another addiction. ROFL

FingersInc 11/ 2/2008 #

I have posted my very first Dotee on my Flickr site. You can access it via my profile here on Swap-Bot. Feel free to leave comments and constructive criticism.

lw2dragonflies 11/ 2/2008 #

as nervous as i am...i am taking the plunge! cant wait to swap my doll!

yossarian 11/ 2/2008 #

Hmm, I'm seriously considering signing up for this one too. I had a lot of fun in the last round.

Omato5 11/ 2/2008 #

I would love to sign up for this as soon as I find out how. Some seriously gorgeous, cute work.

Omato5 11/ 2/2008 #

I did find how to sign up, but is there someplace on the site that tells what to do when finished with the dotee and how to get it on the trading trail?

jewelrydoll180 11/ 2/2008 #

Omato5 I just signed up myself. I got an email saying they would assign a partner. so you might want to check your email. I tried to sign up before I was verified and it told me to click on to verify my email address before I could participate. Aren't these little Dotees so cute. I just found out about them yesterday. I think it's going to be fun.

scottishlass 11/ 4/2008 #

Thanks for this. I made mine last night and now I can't wait to find out where her new home is.

Helina 11/ 4/2008 #

Yep, me again, haven't got the first one yet but still want to play again. Thank you for the swap, I have my baby almost ready!

Shayzilla 11/ 4/2008 #

I am a newbie to Swap-bot and to making Dotees. I was hesitant to join the swap because I've never even HEARD of dotee dolls until I joined swap bot this past friday but everytime I log on...I take a look at these little babies and I'm SO EXCITED to try. I'll try anything once...so lets give it a go. I'm practicing so my partner isn't disappointed. YAY!

magpie55 11/ 4/2008 #

I was determined not to sign up for any more swaps until after Christmas!!! But I couldn't resist. I'll love my new dotee, ugly baby or not.

magpie55 11/ 4/2008 #

Terre, I love all your dotees. Thank you for sharing. I have never made one so I can't. I am flying tomorrow. I wish I could bring scissors. I would have something to do with my hands!! Maybe I'll cut out the shape and leave all my thread ends hanging until we get somewhere.

TinkerB74 11/ 4/2008 #

OK, I just joined swap-bot tonight after hearing about it from my nieces. I am just learning all the jargon like ATCs and Dotee dolls. I have never thought of myself as crafty, but I think I could do this and it looks like fun!! Thanks for making this swap open and inviting to newbies....I can't wait to get started on my (probably ugly) baby!! :)

makestuff 11/ 5/2008 #

Thanks Magpie - why can't you make one? Maybe you could take thread snips on the plane? I think scissors are allowed if they are under a certain length.

This is from

Airsafe.com

Cutting Instruments: Most cutting instruments, including carpet knives and box cutters (and spare blades), any device with a folding or retractable blade, ice picks, straight razors, and metal scissors with pointed tips. Small scissors with a cutting edge less than four inches (10 cm) and small tools such as pliers and screwdrivers that are less than seven inches (18 cm) in length are allowed in the cabin.

So if the scissors are less than 4 inches and do not have a pointed tip, seems that they are allowed. I've heard of stitchers taking kid's safety scissors on the plane - not the greatest tool to use, but it would work, I think.

luvscrappin 11/ 5/2008 #

Hi, I never heard of or made a dotee doll until swap-bot. I joined this swap so I can try to make my first one. They look so cute. Any advice? Please don't be disappointed. I am also handsewing it.

ladyfeathers 11/ 7/2008 #

Don't know what is more addicting this site or these dolls!!!!! Will post a pic of my first later the weekend.

onehappyrobot 11/ 7/2008 #

i'm so excited to make my very first dotee!! :D

ladydy5 11/ 8/2008 #

If anyone would like to see my dotees it is on flickr.com www.flickr.com/photos/ladydyoftennessee. For some reason I can't get the picture on here like you all do. I think I have my first one listed there.

Muriel 11/ 8/2008 #

90 participants soo far 8) I'm willing to angel if needed!

ninou 11/ 8/2008 #

I just couldn't resist! I never made a dotee, never even heard of them before reading about them here on swap-bot! I'm very excited to do my very first one too, it's quite a fun challenge! :o)

dixie22 11/ 8/2008 #

I made my first two dotee dolls and gave them to my grandchildren. They loved them. I want to make several and pick my best one for this trade.

jewelrydoll180 11/10/2008 #

I made my first Dotee and my first blog. check out my Dotee and other stuff at www.jewelrydoll180.blogspot.com There is some what of a gliche though when you click on an item it gets really huge .I have'nt figured out how to size it down so it is not to big for the screen. I'll just have to figure it out. Peace...

twobluecrows 11/10/2008 #

Oh, I can't keep away any longer! I have fabric to make dotees, from a dotee fabric swap, and someone even sent me embroidered faces, and...I have beads coming out of my ears!, so I have no excuse whatsoever! I'm joining!

Cyn

Sunnie 11/11/2008 #

I didnt know what Dotees where until last night and i'm already hooked they're such sweet little things , I can't wait to make my first :) Thanks Cheryl for such a detailed description and the very useful link :)

CherylLaVon 11/11/2008 #

magicjessnrach they are both BEAUTIFUL!

doublesided SO glad to have you!

jensquil careful, they're addicting :D

AccentsByEddita I'm so glad you found the information helpful :)

FingersInc for me it's not a craft, nor a hobby, it IS an addiction! LOL! There is no criticism to leave for your doll, she's SO CUTE!

lw2dragonflies YAY! Welcome aboard the S.S. Dotee!

yossarian That's what it's all about! FUN!

Omato5 After partners are assigned, in the yellow box to the right of the swap information there will be a link that says "See who you send to" or something like that. When you click on that link it will give you a pop-up window that shows your partner's name, their user name, their address and their email address. There will also be a link that says "rate your coordinator and your partner" and if you click on that, it will show you who the partner that is sending to you will be.

jewelrydoll180 it truly should be a GREAT experience!

scottishlass WOOHOO! You're truly on the ball! Thank You!!

Helina YAY! Yeah, there are a lot of people sending late in the first one. I was pretty worried about that but we have had so many wonderful angels for these swaps step up and email me that they've either got dolls ready or will do one if needed that I'm confident that everyone is going to come out of this with really great prizes :)

Shayzilla I'm so glad you're in the swap! I'm excited for you!

magpie55 sometimes the ugly babies are the funnest to look at. I've never gotten one yet though. Maybe I'm just blinded by the love that goes into them but even my punk rocker dotee that I received in the Punk Rock dotee swap made me smile.

TinkerB74 I hadn't heard of ATCs or dotees until I joined swap-bot either. I have learned that I'm not artistic enough for ATCs but have truly found my niche with dotees :D

tere1998 that was sweet of you to look that up. I have some kids round tip scissors that work awesome for thread, just not so great for the material but that certainly can be cut out ahead of time.

luvscrappin my only advice is to have fun with it. Anything you have fun doing will turn out PERFECT rather you think it's perfect or not. Keep in mind, we are all our worst critics! @classychica made me a beautiful quote book and my favorite quote in the book was this... "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun!" ~ Kathryn Hepburn I hand sew my dotees too.

ladyfeathers I can't wait to see your doll!

onehappyrobot I'm so excited for you!

ladydy5 I couldn't tell which one you made for this swap but here's a CLICKABLE LINK Your dolls are SO CUTE!

Muriel Thanks SO MUCH!

ninou I'm sure this is going to be a GREAT experience for you!

dixie22 my step-daughter is 26 and asked me to make her a doll after she found out my hubby had me make him a doll. I laughed so hard because she was so cute about it.

jewelrydoll180 Here's a CLICKABLE LINK to your blog and doll. I hope everyone goes and looks because you are a TRUE artist! Your doll is really pretty!!! I LOVE her face!

twobluecrows CYN! I'm so glad you're going to play!

Sunnie aren't they Amazing?!?! You're so very welcome! I'm excited that there are so many new dotee makers going to come from these swaps! It is going to add so much to the variety on my dotee tree!

dreamerkins 11/11/2008 #

my hubby kinda thinks they are creepy, which might be part of why i like them... because after i make something, i have to show him, and it's funny to watch him stumble over what to say...lol.

CherylLaVon 11/11/2008 #

ROFLMAO! dreamerkins I make my husband kiss mine and give them names!

BWAHAHAHAHA!!

dandelion 11/11/2008 #

This looks like such a FUN swap, I couldn't pass it by. Here's my first dotee:

CherylLaVon > Thanks! I've already made my first dotee... But I think I'm going to keep her and make another one for the swap... ;o)

By the way, how can I post a picture here?

jewelrydoll180 11/13/2008 #

CherylLaVon, Thank you for the compliment I made another one . She has really BIG !! hair. She's going to the Disco. Peace ...

kay66 11/14/2008 #

Where do I go to rate this wonderful person that made me a beautiful dotee. How can I find the place to give her a 5 and a heart?. kay66 [email protected]

doublesided 11/15/2008 #

@Kay66 ... to rate someone, go into the swap the item is from, in the top right hand corner there should be a yellow box, within that box click on "rate your partner and coordinator", this is will allow you to rate your partner. If you click the box saying this was an extra special package, this will give your sender a heart!

Its so great that we have so many new Dotee addicts joining! I really hope I get someones 'first'!

Shayzilla 11/16/2008 #

WHHOOO HOO made my first doll ever. Its a little on the rough side but I can see where I can improve and I'm in love with my little sunshine doll. Nothing better than a little sunshine when its so cold out. I would post pic's but that would be upsetting to my partner so tonight I'll make my second Dotee and I'll get some pictures up. Fun Fun Fun!!

Omato5 11/16/2008 #

I clicked on the link in my email, but still can't find where to find who I am swapping with.

It's time to start swappin'. You can now view your swap partner for Not just for BEGINNERS DOTEE Swap LEARN HOW HERE!! at Swap-bot. Go to:

Help!!!!

magpie55 11/19/2008 #

Omato, you need to log in first and go to your dashboard page. Then click on the name of the swap. Then look at the yellow box on the top right of the page and find 'See the partners you send to". Remember, you don't swap directly with someone. Rather, you send to someone and some else sends to you. It goes around in a circle. Have fun!!

Muriel 11/20/2008 #

Oh, I just got mine and she is absolutely adorable!!!

Omato5 11/21/2008 #

I mailed my first ever Dotee doll swap to Marcy Mitchell this a.m. Sure hope she likes it.

Omato5 11/28/2008 #

There is nothing on my dashboard page at all. It took me forever today to find this swap. Can't figure out what happened. I did sign in and it shows no swaps for me at all.

drummy 11/30/2008 #

Omato5 - go to your dashboard and then above it click on "sent" when you see the swap click on the title.. then to the right is a smaller box and it gives you options.. like who you send to.. and rate your partner

once you clicked to let everyone know you sent your package it automatically moves the swap to your sent folder.. notice it should say current, sent, archived and watchlist (which is a wonderful feature as well)

Hope this helps! Krista

Omato5 12/ 1/2008 #

Krista, thanks for the help. But, each of my headings, including dashboard, sent, archieved, watching, etc., has nothing under it. Each one says nothing found. Thanks for your help. Lila

Omato5 12/ 1/2008 #

Leah, what a gorgeous purple darling you sent to me. Loved my package and my dotee. Thanks bunches. Lila

scottishlass 12/ 7/2008 #

I've posted pics of mine to my blog. I don't know how to get the image from there to here...sorry!

I've not added a hyperlink before on swapbot so if I mess up the address is http://naughtystep.wordpress.com

my pictures of dotee

Omato5 12/ 8/2008 #

Do you sometimes not get rated? I know I sent mine out 11-20 and just wondering as I haven't been rated yet, and that makes a newbie feel as if maybe I didn't do one that was good enough. Thanks

twobluecrows 12/12/2008 #

Omato5--the first thing to do is check the profile of your partner to see his/her status, then communicate with him/her to see if your package arrived. If your partner happens to be partially suspended, or, heaven forbid, fully suspended, there's not much you can do, except perhaps send them an e-mail--you get their e-mail address with the mailing address. Hopefully your partner is just busy and forgot to rate, but a gentle, friendly reminder will make it happen, OR if your package isn't there, if you didn't use delivery confirmation or package tracking, them perhaps you might have to make another Dotee and re-send.

Communication is the first step, if possible.

Good luck!

Cyn

Omato5 12/12/2008 #

Cyn

Thank you. I did send an email via regular email and via swap-bot contact. Hopefully she liked it.

Lila

CherylLaVon 12/30/2008 #

Ladies! Thank you so much for answering each other's questions! I truly appreciate it. I've been catching the ones that have come to my inbox but lapsed in my not feeling well and didn't think to check here. UGH, I feel like I truly dropped the ball on this swap.

If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me in PM. I'm SO happy to answer anyone's questions they have!
