Description: | |
One out of every four animals on earth is a beetle; they are the largest group of living organisms, bar none. They live in almost every ecosystem on Earth. Beetles wear their own suits of armor, chew their food politely (the word 'beetle' is thought to derive from the Old English 'biter'), they make music, glow in the dark (fireflies!), and have been around before the continents existed. They are tiny, large, and sometimes breathtakingly beautiful. In at least one instance (Khepera, a sacred scarab in Ancient Egypt who pushed the sun across the sky), they have been the avatars of gods. So, in the business of the next month or so, let's take some time to honor ... a beetle. Create a beetle postcard that is inspired by a real-life beetle (or beetles). Create it (more or less) in the shape of a beetle. Send it to one partner. Feel as strong as a Goliath beetle, as beautiful as a jewel beetle, and as bright as a firefly. Open to all members in good standing, I will angel any unsent swaps. Image courtesy of Wikipedia, and is of the looooongest beetle, the Dynastes hercules ecuatorianus. |
