Thank you for hosting this swap.

Someone brought to my notice that 5"X7" size is beyond the mailing restrictions of certain countries, resulting in extra costs/ inconvenience. Therefore, changed the size requirements. :)

Your examples indicate you are asking for a mosaic of colored pieces that result in resembling a nameable thing. A collage is a different genre of cut and paste art where images are gathered from various sources and assembled to form another image of an idea or emotion or aesthetic mood.

^^ Yes, you are right about what I am referring to. If it is not collage, I do not know what it is called. Do you think it is called mosaic?

jukejan 01/10/2018 #

Mosaic is an accurate description. Great images, but I need to think about it before I sign up.

The examples are not 100% torn paper, is there a required % for this swap? I don't want to surprise my partner. Watching.

RooBaRoo 01/28/2018 #

There isn't a % requirement. Oh dear! This is getting so complex! I've tried to be more clear & modified the swap description to reflect flexibility & clear rules :

1) size of the complete art : 4" X 6" 2) made of multiple pieces of paper - torn OR cut, random OR whole 3) abstract art is definitely okay but not abstract captioned "untitled". If it is abstract, the concept should REACH your audience.

Interesting - until today, i thought "collage" also included "paper mosaic." I went through a phase as a kid where I made lots of paper mosaics (usually animals) but always thought I was making a collage! Just goes to show you're never too old to learn something new. :^)

This page has a pretty good explanation: article mosaic vs collage

wolfeagle 01/29/2018 #

Mosaic is a type of collage. Collage is most commonly here on swap-bot, taking images to make another image but thats not the only type of collage. For the rest of the world, there are many types of collage. Collage can be many other mediums, like recycled material collage or wood or even fabric, or digital, etc, where no images are cut and pasted, rather, color, texture and pattern come in to play creating a new art piece. Those examples are collage.
In the art world, many galleries and museums do not recognize cut and paste collage as an art medium, as it's not original work, unless you are cutting up your own copyrighted images. If they are more progressive and do include collage as an art form then, they usually only consider it art if the artists does not use whole images, but rather takes the inspiration from color and texture and creates something of their own creation. Which is completely opposite from cut and paste art. For mail art, it is more loose and fun, and anything goes,
