Description:

Did you know this week (Sept 24-28) is banned book week (in the US)?

What do you think about banned books?

Have you read any banned books?

Would you be more likely or less likely to pick up a book just because it's banned?

Do you have a 'favorite' banned book?

Let's do a quick swap - just a note card or short letter, typed or handwritten is fine - to 2 partners and talk about banned books. Find lists of banned books HERE or look at goodreads.com under 'lists' and type in banned, or do a google search - what ever works for you. Here in the US, some books are banned in one state, but not another. Some are nationally banned. I'm not sure how book banning works in other countries (I'd like to believe it doesn't happen, but I'm sure it does). Check out a list of banned books, and see if you've read any of them.

We won't be talking about if books should be banned, or if the reasons for banning is right or wrong, just discuss the questions above, thinking about any book you find on a banned book list. This can include any genre, any reading level. I was rather surprised to hear that picture books for young children were banned. As a parent, there are some YA books I'd rather not have my teenagers read, but we don't ban books in our family. We discuss them. :)

If I had been more organized, we might have had a book discussion about one of these, but I goofed. Sorry about that. But if you are interested in doing a book discussion on a banned book, please let me know. :)

This swap is International and you will have 2 partners. This should be lightweight, so hopefully that won't be a problem. :)

Manual rating, since this is a group. :)

Keep in mind, many favorite, loved and classic books are included on banned lists. Such as "The Great Gatsby", "To Kill A Mockingbird" and all of the Harry Potter books! Most Judy Blume books, also, are included on the banned lists, and those were some of the only books people of my generation had for their middle and YA years. I've often wondered if it wouldn't be easier to make a list of books NOT banned!

(hopefully this works) - Check out this page on Good Reads

THIS LIST is rather interesting as well. This is from wikipedia, so a little more info, if you're not as familiar with banned books.
