NFS Framed Pinwheels

2-19-19 thru 3-13-19

--2 partners

--1 block to each partner

--8 1/2-inch block when mailed

CUTTING FABRIC

Pinwheel HSTS (half square triangles)

(2) 3 X 3-inch same print for center pinwheel

(2) 3 X 3-inch tone-on-tone white print or plain white fabric

In order for the pinwheel to pop in the center of this block do not use the same print in the border that you used on the pinwheel.

Borders

(12) 2 Β½ X 2 Β½ squares of different prints (these can be from all different prints or up to 4 squares alike – small prints are best) suggested 1930’s prints, or floral prints, any small print really

ASSEMBLY

(use ΒΌ inch seam allowance)

Take one 3-inch square white fabric and one 3-inch square pinwheel print fabric. Draw a diagonal line on the back side of white fabric from upper left to lower right. Stack the 2 pieces right sides together. Stitch on either side of the line ΒΌ inch. Cut on drawn line. Press HST and square up to 2 ½”. Stitch the 2 together. Repeat this process for the other half of the Pinwheel.

(Sometimes it is best to make all 4 parts and lay them out before stitching the pinwheel together so that you get the right formation….looking at the picture helps me too.)

Stitch both halves of the pin wheel together. Press

Take 2 border prints and stitch them together. Make 2 pairs of these. Stitch one pair on the left side of the pinwheel, and one on the right side of the pinwheel. Press.

Sew 4 different border charms for the top row, and 4 for the bottom row. Attach these to top and bottom of pinwheel unit. Press

If we have enough interest in this swap we will do it several rounds.

My squares are only coming out 8 1/2. Is anyone else getting 9”?

perkl8r 02/27/2019 #

Let me double check that for you, I tend to make my seam allowances a little smaller than 1/4 inch....

@jn6754 you are 100% correct, these turn out 8 1/2" when done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. thank you for setting me straight on that.
