Description:

It's that time of year again. Mailboxes which have routinely received bills, junk mail and, if they're lucky, an occasional swap are now becoming inundated with piles of mail order catalogs inciting Christmas shopping. Before tossing this unsolicited clutter into recycle bins, let's have a little fun!

ZINE-MAKING SUPPLIES:

  • One sheet of 8.5" X 11" paper

  • One or more catalogs from any mail-order company or companies

  • A pair of scissors or a precision blade

  • A glue stick, double-stick tape or other medium for use on thin paper

  • Access to a photocopier

If you have never before made an 8-page zine, here is a quick YouTube video tutorial to help you get started. Although the artist in the video draws her zine, yours will be created using collaged pieces.

SWAP GUIDELINES:

  • Wreck those catalogs! Thumb through the pages cutting out words and images that grab your attention. Choose a few pictures to fussy cut and place them on other images to spark your creativity and discover unexpected connections. I used a template (slightly bigger than 2.5" X 4") cut from a piece of copy paper to play with composition options and then either taped the pieces I chose together on their backsides or stuck them to each other with a glue stick. When I finished I had eight rough rectangled pages that I trimmed to size on my paper cutter and then glued to the main zine template . . . a sheet of copy paper folded as demonstrated in the video.

  • Create your zine using ONLY images and words cut from catalogs and pasted to the sheet of 8.5" X 11" paper. No other doodling or altering allowed on this one.

  • The front cover of your zine must include the title: Catalog Collision. Remember to use letters and/or words cut from the catalog(s). (Think ransom note style :-)

  • The back cover of your zine must include your Swap-bot username, also cut from your catalog(s).

  • Make at least as many photocopies of your zine as you have partners. Keep the original for yourself.

  • Cut and fold each zine as demonstrated in the video. Do not cut the original.

  • Pop the zines into addressed one-stamp envies and send them on their way.

Finally, the point of this swap is to play with catalog images turning them into something unexpected and not at all what the marketing companies intended.

BE CREATIVE

BE WEIRD

HAVE FUN

EDITED SWAP GUIDELINES - NOVEMBER 7, 2020:

To complete this swap, please cut words and images from catalogs or magazines to create a zine. Give your zine a title.
