QNT FALL sunshine & shadow block #1

7-5-22 thru 7-30-22

--one partner to receive one block each round

--each block will be 10 1/2 " X 10 1/2" when mailed

This block will be fun and easy to make. Be sure to make 2 blocks each month, one for your partner and one for you to keep. I think this might be a fun way to dig in your stash to find FALL colored prints that will look good together and also help us use up some scraps too.

--first fabric is a lighter FALL colored print

--second fabric is a darker FALL colored print

Pick 2 FALL colored prints each round with one print noticeably lighter than the other. They should be medium to small prints to work best on this block. You might want to use tone-on-tone prints, or even batiks. The point is that one part of the block is FALL sunshine, and the other is FALL shadows. You decide how you want to accomplish that with your fabric prints.

CUTTING instructions per block:

From first FALL colored print fabric cut FOUR 3"X3" pieces and FOUR 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" pieces.

From second FALL colored print fabric cut FOUR 3"X3" pieces and FOUR 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" pieces.

Making HSTS for one block:

On wrong side of lightest print 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" fabric cuts draw one diagonal line from upper left corner to lower right corner with a pencil.

Stack one of the light fabric and one of the dark fabric 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" pieces right-sides together.

Stich 1/4" on either side of the pencil line.

Cut on the pencil line.

Square each HSTS up to 3" X 3".

Press.

Do this step four times using all FOUR 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" of first and second print pieces.

You should end up with 8 HSTS. (Half Square Triangles)

Assembly:

Using swap photo as your model, assemble the block including both the HSTS and the 3" X 3" pieces.

Square up to 10 1/2" X 10 1/2".

Press before mailing.

I hope you enjoy making and swapping this block.

I am deep into using up scraps -- and also making a large rather complex quilt entirely of HSTs -- I'll add this to the list -- I've got plenty of autumn colored fabrics.
