Description:

This swap is for a medium or large journal or sketchbook that is completely handmade by YOU! You will be sending to one partner. The item that you are sending MUST be at least 4x5 inches (thats about quarter-sized), and a half inch thick (feel free to make it much bigger ifn you want). Be creative with this. If you want you can decorate the cover specially for your partner, use funky paper, cover it with beads, paint, glued on things, photos, etc.. Im going to leave it open to ANYONE because to send a journal will be fairly cheap to most anywhere, also, newbies are welcom because people are mean to them and exclude them.. But one thing, beware if you send something that you didnt work hard on, i will haunt you in your sleep! Muahaaa.. Anyways theres nothing more cool than getting a nice creative-looking sketchbook, so i figured, the only thing better than that is to recieve a one of a kind surprise sketchbook made just for you. It can be bound anyway that you like. For details on the different types of binding, you can find a few here .. http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/finishing/a/binding.htm The best thing to do is google it and find one that attracts you. Have fun with it :]

When you say completely handmade, do you mean the paper too? I can make the covers and pick out the paper that goes inside. But making the paper that goes inside will be a little difficult. Especially since I no longer have the space to make paper.

revolutionoise 04/25/2009 #

Oh no the paper doesnt have to be handmade unless you want too.. I just stressed the word handmade so that no one would send anything that they have just bought at a store or something. :]

this sounds so fun! I've already got a bunch of ideas, can't wait to see who my partner is!

Forgive my dumb question: when you mean sketchbook is that with the kind of paper (inside) that you can sketch on, draw on? Please clarify this for me. Thanks, Barbara

revolutionoise 05/ 3/2009 #

No its not a dumb question, MMmm well youre welcome to use any paper that you'd like to use, it can be plain white paper, colored paper, watercolor paper, even lined paper. Anything is good as long as its something that can be written on or drawn on, as opposed to some sort of glossy paper or paper that bleeds when you write on it. Hope that helps. :]

Thanks for putting this together. The book is to be blank pages.

I like to take my books places, so if it's not too much trouble for my swap partner, no beads please. I hate to see you lovely work fall to pieces every time I pull it out of my bag.

How do people usually bind these? I've read a little online but I don't want to make one and it be weird. Do people use rings or wire or what usually?

ChimpieArtist 05/ 7/2009 #

Hi! I found this swap from the swapbot blog (featured swap of the week last week! congrats revolutionoise!) On the blog they had some links to binding techniques. I've always used wax thread and sewn my books together in different patterns, and sometimes adding beads to the thread. But there are loooots of different ways to bind! Rings and wire can be just as beautiful!

I am with the other girl's on this,my question is for these kind of swap's should be held over for at least two week's,to get the lady's a chance to get the stuff they want to do for the swap, mine will be extended over for the lady's to give them the chance to create theire idea's for the hand made thing's but for any chance it can't i would love to join this again.

renees 05/ 9/2009 #

I'm having to un-join. I just don't think my skills are up to par to make a good enough journal and I don't want someone to get a not awesome one. Maybe next time!

llaspina 05/10/2009 #

I dont think it would take more than a week. It's just decorating 2 Pgs. Pretty much. For binding you might use wood glue or gorilla glue on the spine after clamping the pages together with binder clips, let dry, then glue the spine again. Now use a heavy cardstock to bind it together. Look at a coloring book for a good example. just an idea, it might save some time :)
