Description:

Full swap title: ATC Workshop Book Technique: #2 Watercolor on Baby Wipes--- 3 ATCs to 2 Members, 6 ATCs total. This is an international swap.

I am starting a series of ATC swaps based on the techniques taught in Bernie Berlin’s book “Artist Trading Cards Workshop: Create, Collect, Swap published in December 2006 by North Light Publishers. I submitted this idea to the forums here on Swap-bot and there has been interest expressed so here is the second swap.

If you already own this book perhaps you are itching to try some new techniques. Maybe you would like to see how others interpret this technique, so let’s swap ATCs with each other.

And if you don’t yet own this book and you want to learn some new and interesting techniques then perhaps you’d consider buying the book and joining our swap!

Before you commit to this swap please already own the book or have access to a copy from your library. Make sure you have the necessary tools and ingredients on hand before the swap closes. It would not be fair to sign up then not make the ATCs and say “I don’t own the book or the right materials.

This is the SECOND ATC swap in this series and this time we will try the technique “Watercolor on Baby Wipes featured on page 14-15. The necessary ingredients for this swap are: baby wipes, liquid watercolor paint, glue or gel medium, scissors, and your choice of elements to embellish with, ranging from rubber stamped images, collage papers, paper ephemera, and/or three dimensional embellishments.

Due to the nature of this book being copyrighted and the fact that the whole book is based on teaching the reader art techniques I do not feel comfortable posting the full directions of this technique online as it could very well be against the law (a copyright violation).

The book is fantastic. If you don’t yet own it, you can purchase this book online through big bookseller sites or see if your local craft store or rubber stamp store is selling it. The ISBN-10 is 1581808488 and the ISBN-13 is 139781581808483. The book was published in the United State of America. I have no idea what the availability of this book is to foreign countries, but the swap is open to International members so long as you have the book and the materials and want to participate. (Someone told me that anyone can buy online from book vendors but will just pay more in shipping fees.)

Please allow ample time to make these ATCs. I have found through my own experience that when learning a new technique and when using new materials mistakes abound and errors are bound to happen in the experimentation process. So please give yourself enough time to make these ATCs so you can send out high quality work as well as send the ATCs out by the deadline.

Now the rules for who can join. Due to problems with “flakers on Swap-bot I have tightened my hosting requirements which as resulted in a very high compliance rate (hooray). I will not accept newbies to Swap-bot (sorry)---you must have at least three ratings in your file to join--there are many ATC swaps for newbies that you can join in order to get rated by your swap partners. A person can have no more than one “no send on their file. The minimum rating is 4.7. As host I also can choose to ban anyone for any other reason that I see fit, that is my right.

The date to send the swap by is a rule of this swap. Please follow the rules.

You are free to join this swap and not join future swaps in this series. You are free to not join this one but to join other swaps in this series. You don’t have to sign up for all of them, just the ones you want to do and the ones that you have time to do!

Now that the rules are out of the way I wish you luck and fun while trying this technique.

If you want to read more about this book I have published a book review of it on my blog which you can read here.

Thanks! Have fun!

pssst! If you go to amazon.com, search for the book and use the search inside function, this technique is available there so you don't need to actually own the book for this one :)

FarStarr 05/13/2007 #

Will it show you all the pages? I usually just get a sampling with that feature.

FarStarr 05/13/2007 #

Duh..I get what you were saying now...this technique is there....;)

ChristineMM 05/13/2007 #

Hey, good sleuthing. I didn't realize that about the "look inside" feature had this one in it!

Cloverst 05/14/2007 #

Yeah I was looking to see if perhaps it was cheap enough to persuade the hubby to get it but then I thought hmmm I wonder what's in it. .co.uk doesn't have the search inside feature so I headed on over to .com and it was there!

A few days ago I painted the baby wipes. Yesterday I glued them to a stiff background. I was surprised that they were sticking so well without having the whole top surface saturated with the gel medium. So mine are soft on the top surface which is kind of cool.

Now I have to figure out what to do with them from here.

Hope everyone is having fun experimenting and playing with this technique.

Okay! I finished with the paint on the paper towel, and I'm ready to work with the baby wipes. Thanks for the opportunity to use the book rather than have it sit on my shelf until I felt the urge.

My daughter and I worked on these tonight as well as the papertowel and Leaf resist backgrounds. I have to say that this was my favorite of the three. I used Alcohol Inks and Watercolors. It was alot of fun. Thanks for Hosting Christine.

Moominbrooke 06/ 7/2007 #

I agree with Betsy G! It's one thing to have the technique available and quite another to have actually done it. Kudos!

ChristineMM 06/11/2007 #

I just assigned partners. Sorry for the delay, I was out of town at a conference for two days and was offline.

I hope everyone has fun with this swap!

I have made the backgrounds and just need to figure out what to do with them now!

ChristineMM 06/16/2007 #

I just extended the due date and send all participants an email to notify you of this.

I am finding it hard to do all new art techniques in a series of ATC swaps with such close deadlines.

Oddly, Swap-bot's computer changed the sign up date to 1999. Weird! So hey, it looks like we've been in this swap a loooong time.

Have fun everyone.

This set was difficult. Of the three, I only really like one set, but they are postal to my partners.

FarStarr 06/21/2007 #

Thanks for extending the due date, Christine. I keep having a problem of what to do with the backgrounds once I have them. P.S.-I met Bernie Berlin yesterday while I was taking a Michael DeMeng workshop. It was neat to see them both in the same place and hang out with Michael all day..;)

FarStarr 06/21/2007 #

Mine on on their way in the morning to Christine and KVDesigns. Enjoy!

BetsyG 06/22/2007 #

Okay, I did it. Sagewind and Brooke, your cards are on their way. I hope you like them.

ChristineMM 06/26/2007 #

Reb and KVDesigns your ATCs went out this morning.

I finally finished them yesterday. I thought this technique of making the backgrounds as per the directions was easy and fun. My challenge came with I had creative block when I tried to use those backgrounds! A bunch I did with red and blue paint were so vivid, dark and strong that I had trouble finding ephemera that at least did not clash with it. The green I chose for the others was soft and also I had trouble coming up with ephemera that was at least color coordinated and looked good. I really struggled to finish these.

The third swap using this book as the source of techniques has a due date in July.

I think I'll try for one technique every three weeks. However I was and am still busy with outside activities and with typical late spring and early summer fun seasonal stuff. In general my hosting and swapping is going to slow down this summer, I think. However I do plan to continue to host swaps using the techniques in this book. I probably will use spare time this summer to experiment and play with these techniques on my own then will host the swaps and will have the ATCs done way ahead of time.

I hope these swaps are both fun and challenging for everyone.

FarStarr your ATCs arrived. Wow, I love all of them. The colors of the baby wipes came out great. I never thought to use fibers like you did on that one. And the other with my initial underneath the baby wipe that is raised up was such a good idea. The other with the quote, I love that Van Gogh quote and the use of the packing tape transfer was something I blanked out on and should have done for my ATCs. Great job on all of them.

Anayari 06/26/2007 #

cazr and artindulgence your cards are on their way.

ChristineMM 09/ 6/2007 #

Two things from your hostess:

  1. Please take the time to rate the swappers who sent you ATCs. (Some of my recipients are not rating me so I know some of you are not doing ratings.)

  2. If anyone was flaked upon for this swap please PM me with the person's name. I want to ban anyone from my future swaps who flakes on past swaps of mine.

Thanks.
