Description:

September is International Women's Friendship Month, so this will be an international pen pal swap where you send a long letter to one partner in a decorated envelope.

The idea is to meet a new friend and make a new pen pal, one you will hopefully strike up a true friendship with and correspond with long term.

You don't have to be a woman to participate in this swap (there's just no way to double check for that on the Internet), but you do need a sincere interest in finding long-term, platonic, friendly correspondence with a female pen pal.

Your letter should be a long letter, at least five pages if you write and three A4 sized sheets if you type, and include at least two things about you that go beyond the basics - something that your real friends already know but your casual acquaintances do not. Be sure to include your mailing address so your new friend can write you back.

Also, please send your letter in a decorated envelope that will make it stand out in a mailbox full of white envelopes. Add color, rubber stamps, doodles, pictures from magazines, whatever you think would make your new pen friend smile when she sees your envie.

Finally, this is my first time to host a letter swap so if I left something out -- or things are unclear -- please do not hesitate to ask!

To Summarize:

-- Send a long letter (at least five pages written or three pages typed) to one swapper -- Include at least two things about yourself that only your real friends would know -- Include your address so your new friend can write you back -- Put the letter in a decorated envelope

And be sure to write back once you get your letter from your other partner!

Have Fun, Onyx

Is that 5 pages written Onyx? For us hand writing challenged folks how many typed sheets would that be :D

Onyx 08/23/2010 #

Oh good question! Senders choice on whether to type or write, but let's say 5 pages if you hand write and 3 if you type, using a normal (10 or 12 point) font. It's not that hard to write that much once you get going, and the idea is to give your partner a good idea of who you are so you can establish the start of a real conversation. Sound good?

and white size of paper are we speaking? :D (A4 aka printer sized paper, the smaller letter set sizes? ) :) sounds like a great swap!

papercrafter23 08/23/2010 #

@50DaysOfSummer that is a good question. This sounds like a great swap to me too.

Another good question! Let's say the A4 (8.5" x 11") letter sized paper ... that will make it easy to get everybody "on the same page" so to speak. If someone has the perfect stationary for the theme and it's a different size, then you can always message your partner and see if it's ok before you start to write (or just write more :). The idea is to get some good communication going, so more communication is generally a good thing.

Does the 5 pages have to be front and back of all 5 pages or 2.5 pages of front and back? I hope that makes sense!

Onyx 08/24/2010 #

Five pages total would be easiest. Whether you send five pages with all the writing on the front, or three pages because you wrote on the front and the back, or more because you got into what you were writing and kept going ... that's all up to personal preference.

TryshaH81 08/25/2010 #

Can we go ahead and start on them??

Onyx 08/26/2010 #

Sure, go ahead, but you may want to leave some space and energy to write a bit that is specific to your partner's profile ... it's not a swap requirement, but it is a nice thing to do :).

tangledthreads 08/31/2010 #

So, a part of swap requirement is we have to write receiving from partner back? If so, does the return letter have to meet the ame requirements of the first letter?

Onyx 09/ 1/2010 #

Yes on the reply, if you sign up for this swap you are also committing to replying to at least one letter (hopefully more). As for the requirements of the reply, we can't rate those so there's no way to enforce it, but in the spirit of the swap you should try to meet them for at least your first letter. The idea is that hopefully people will "meet" someone else they can have a long term pen-pal relationship with, so I don't want to regulate too much after the first letter ... at some point the personalities of the correspondents should become more important than the rules, and how they want to communicate between the two of them should become more important than the original swap parameters.

tangledthreads 09/ 1/2010 #

Ok, thanks!

Onyx 09/ 2/2010 #

You are welcome ... glad folks are signing up, I think this will be fun.

Yay, I just read my partner's profile, she sounds really neat! I'm going to go write her and her son a nice letter!
