Swap edited Jan. 15, 2011 The name of this swap has been changed from Writers Welcome the New Year to A Writer's Year of Inspiration.

This is a swap that will take a little time to put together and is designed to encourage writers during the year. The idea is to give your partner, in advance, a year's worth of inspiration in one package. The package will contain an introductory letter from you, four encouraging letters with a small surprise, a book or magazine about writing, a writing mascot for the year, a wrapped birthday present with a card, and a profile surprise.

You will send one partner each of the following six items:

  • A letter or note introducing yourself

Tell your partner who you are, what you do, the type of writing you enjoy and anything else you'd like to share.

  • Four letters with a small surprise

Each should be in a sealed and separate envelope and labeled 1st Quarter, 2nd Quarter, 3rd Quarter, 4th Quarter. Each letter should encourage your partner toward his or her writing goals for each three month period of the year. The first quarter period covers January-March; the second quarter, April-June; the third quarter, July-September; and the fourth quarter, October-December. Every envelope should also include a small surprise (a bookmark, magnet, pen or some other small treat)

  • A book or magazine about writing.

The reading material can be new or very gently used.

  • A writing mascot for the year.

This is something that your partner can place on her desk or computer, carry with a laptop or otherwise keep close for use and/or inspiration throughout 2011. Some examples of what you could send: a small stuffed animal, a mug, a dotee doll, a plaque or wall hanging, a small piece of art, a pin, a pen, etc. These are just examples, use your partner's profile and/or your creativity to come up with an appropriate 2011 Writers' Mascot.

  • A wrapped birthday present and birthday card

This will be for your partner to open on his or her birthday. Be sure to include a card.

  • A profile surprise

This item is something that you know your partner will love and/or appreciate based on her profile. It doesn't have to be writing related.

As you see, this is time intensive. You can start gathering items and writing your encouraging notes right now. There will be a little more than two weeks after the sign up date to send out your packages.

Questions? Post them below.

Thank you @angel1985 for inspiring part of this swap.

Come along, watchers. Join up. Don't be shy. There are 8 of you as I write this. :)

I think the swap is too complicated to put all that stuff together. I don't need to receive any of it to inspire me; I will write no matter what. I'm feeling discouraged about members of this group not joining any kind of writing swaps. I feel like pen pals with the 4 or 5 who regularly join swaps -- that's fine. But the rest of the members of the group respond to almost nothing. I don't know why and they don't say why. But I feel I'd waste my time and effort encouraging the few who DO swaps as they don't need encouragement and the others just don't respond. Sorry to sound down and to be unable to offer any kind of solution. I wish I could.

I don't think I will commit to this right now. I just completed a Project12 swap. I don't think I would be able to afford sending overseas at this point. I could do it if I could find some sort of magazine for the 'reading inspiration' part. Sorry, I didn't even realize I had this on my watch list. I'm sorry more people don't participate - Sometimes I will but if I know my month will be busy I try and stay out of swap obligations.

@Artistic ->being the recipient of my Project12 swap you know I was late on that one-I don't want to put myself in that kind of a bind again.

I will reconsider this swap later on in the year if it is offered.

Inspiration is always welcome. Having also sent out a Project 12 swap, I realize how much work it is to put together something this involved. (I wouldn't mind an extended deadline.) But I also realize how delightful it is to have an extended connection with a fellow swapper. I ususally wait to be profile-specific, but I can start gathering now and see how far along I am by the deadline. New habits for the new year:)

This is just a bit too complicated for me at the moment. Not that I'm not a fan of big swaps, I have just told myself that I need to accomplish more things before I put myself in one again.

Plus, I'm not sure if I will be able to keep track of what I receive for a whole year.

I think it might be neater to divide this swap into four swaps, one for each quarter. You could send a mascot one quarter, a writing book/magazine another, a profile surprise, etc.

It sounds like a great idea, just too complicated for me at the moment.

This is abit too complicated for me to join. Not that I wouldn´t want to, but I don´t have the conditions to gather all the necessary items, specially a book or magazine about writting, which I can only find in portuguese here. I agree with @Nserviam said, if divided it would be better, people could join one when they can gather everything, then other people the other...

I am only interested in straight writing. I like pen pals, cards and story writing. I don't like peparing packages or sending them overseas. I was disappointed in a few swaps, for which I worked hard and long and didn't receive anything at all. I no longer join anything complicated, or those which entail costly packages.

My concern is purely financial at this time. Catching up on after christmas costs. Shipping international is to costly right now.

Odds not looking good. sigh.trying

I would love to do this swap but it just seems a little much for me at the moment. I do think that this would be a great quarterly swap too :O) Sorry

ladydy5 01/19/2011 #

It is a little much and sending all those items overseas can be an expense. Good luck to those who sign up. Maybe something a little less complicated will come along.

Greetings all: Thanks so much for all of your feedback.

I have to bail. It is a shame. I was looking forward to it.
