Description:

Missing the "Letter" swaps (you know, the pen to paper kind of "letter"), I want to start one for all of us that enjoy receiving a charming letter in the mail.

This is a simple letter swap. Write about yourself, what you might be doing this particular day, what your hopes and dreams are, or anything interesting about your personal space in this world that you'd like to just share with a reader. Keep your letter on a predominately positive note and just enjoy the process of penning your thoughts on paper for someone to read.

The main requirement is that your letter not be a quick "note". Find a quiet corner and spend a brief moment in time writing a friendly letter to your assigned partner. You can use any size "stationery" you'd like, but my idea is that your letter equal at least a notebook-sized sheet of paper (8.5"x11"). So you can use smaller stationery, 5"x7" for example, and just plan to write a 2 or 3 page letter in that size stationery. The idea is to simply write a letter that makes you happy to write and that your partner would be happy to receive.

Also, please tuck a little "something" in your letter as an extra surprise. I always love to unfold a letter and discover a little surprise aside from the letter. This can be anything that fits neatly within the page(s) of your letter. For example, a sheet of stickers, or a few specially chosen ones, a bookmark, a photograph, a postcard, a comic strip, a recipe...just about anything you can think of that you believe your partner would enjoy (read their profile). Something flat is ideal, but don't let this limit you in sending something that may be "bulky" or dimensional. However, if you do end up sending something that causes your letter to bulge a bit, please take an extra moment to wrap it with a clear packaging tape to strengthen the envelope in case the envelope goes through an automated machine. A trip through an automated sorting machine could rip the envelope, letter, and/or damage your goodie. Another idea is to write the words "Please Hand Cancel" on the face of the envelope near the postage if your letter has an odd shaped trinket enclosed.

There you go! A simple letter swap with a small goodie enclosed.

Please have a rating of at least 4.5 and if you have any questions, feel free to ask here in the forum/comments section.

This is an International letter swap.

Welcome, everyone! It's great to see all these great ratings, and I've been enjoying reading your individual profiles, too! Great descriptive profiles indicating your various likes. This will make it a pleasure for your partner to pick out a little extra tuck-in for your letter that they're sure you will like.

I look forward to seeing lots more letter writers sign up! Tell your friends!

And again, WELCOME! :)

Why, just hours after I drop a bunch of swaps and post that I'm cutting back, do I find this nice letter swap, my favorite type of swap, and it even fits into my schedule?

heliogal 10/14/2007 #

I wanted to know if a typed letter would be OK?

KarlaKC 10/14/2007 #

heliogal, typed letters are perfectly acceptable if you're unable to write a letter out longhand. No problem at all!

Thanks Karlakc, I can write but somethimes my handwriting is hard to read and I do seem to write longer letters when I type them. :)

I'm really interested in this swap, especially since I recently started a group on flickr to motivate friends and new friends to write to each other. My problem is that I am new here and therefore I do not have a rating yet to meet the swap's criteria. Is there any way I can still join the swap and hope you'll find me worthy to participate? Please get bak to me soon, thanks! :) Karen

novolaras (Karen), my first thought after reading your question is that it wouldn't be fair to the other swappers to change the rules mid-stream. The rule being referred to is the one requiring a 4.5 rating.

However, considering that this is a letter/tuck-in swap, and not a big financial loss for anyone if a partner doesn't perform, and because I will personally "angel" any letter/tuck-in swap not received, I will bend the rule this time for this swap. I think we can all afford to give you the benefit of the doubt, believing that you will honor your commitment to your partner if you sign up.

Thank you for asking, and I hope you will enjoy participating.

I would very much like to take part in this swap but my ratings so far have been for email only swaps. Is it still okay for me to join? Jess

LiLPistachio 10/20/2007 #

Hi, I'm a newbie but I'd love to join this swap! I've swapped before on Flickr, and I've never had a 'no send'.

pookieb 10/22/2007 #

I think it's a little unfair that the sendout date is the 29th but...here it is the 23rd and we still don't know who our partners are...

jennyb 10/22/2007 #

glad you posted that pookieb - i thought there was a problem with my account as i haven't used it recently.... glad its not just me who hasn't been assigned a partner.

but agree that if the send date could be extended it would be good, please KarlaKC

I pm'd the hostess last night with my concerns. I like to get my swaps out early. She hadn't signed into SB since 10/17 so maybe she's unaware that she's got a swap to assign. I've gone ahead and started my letter. I can add more once I see who my partner is and am able to check their profiles for interests. Also I think SB will automatically assign partners by day 3 or something like that.

elusivecallie 10/23/2007 #

I think you're right chappykat, i think i heard somewhere too that SB automatically assigns partners after 3 days. So, i think that means that it should auto assign them around midnight tonight (in whatever time zone the servers are in). If my math is right, we'll know by tomorrow morning who our partners are.

My letter is ready and will be on its way to you in NC, lil pistachio!

earthnk 10/24/2007 #

Hi SadTomato! I sent your letter and a little treat that I hope will brighten your day. So be on the lookout:)

Letter and goodies are going out today to spoonergregory from Utah. Enjoy.

KarlaKC 10/25/2007 #

Hi, everyone! I apologize for being late. I had to go out-of-town and though I remembered I had assignments to make on this swap, I couldn't find a computer to access and didn't have much time to search one out. However, I'm glad to know that SB automatically assigns partners if coordinators haven't by so many days past signups.

I did extend the Send By date by one week, so your letters are due out by Monday, November 5th instead of Monday, October 29th. Please ignore the "Sign Up by" date of November 30, 1999. SB changed that for some reason when I changed the Send By date and I can't go in there and change that November 30, 1999 date back to October 20, 2007. But it shouldn't be an issue except that it just looks odd. :)

Have fun, everyone! And let's get 100% participation with NO "no sends", OK? Enjoy!
