Here are some links to free online crochet butterfly patterns: http://dishclothdiaries.blogspot.com/2009/09/3-d-butterfly.html http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=109350 http://cache.lionbrand.com/faq/542.html those are three of the dozens of patterns that are at :http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/butterflies.php

My favorite patterns to use for my tatted butterflies are the classic, simple ring ones. I use R6-6-1--1-6-6, R6+6-6, R6-6-6, R6+6-1--1-6-6, tie off antennae most often (so often it's like meditation). When made with 20 thread, they are about an inch in size, and well over with size 10.

I'm still beginning level - I'd love to hear from others in this swap what size thread they're using. I definitely don't want my partner to be disappointed with size 20 or something...I like to make people happy! ;) Anyone want to weigh in for me?

I often use size 10 as my core thread and use a 20 thread on the ball. It makes for a stiffer yet delicate item. Its a good technique for small things.

I used 10 on one and 30 on the others :)
