Description:

The sad news is that Borders Books & Music is going out of business. The good news is that they are having an epic going out of business sale!

Your mission is to shop your local Borders bookstore for any random items you can find. Take advantage of their discounts and spend about $7 to $10 on ANYTHING you can find!

Borders sells more than just books (and my local Borders has been getting some really zany stuff as they clean out their warehouse!) Whatever you can unearth from their closing sales will be a piece of Borders history. There is no item limitation here. Just use your imagination and your partner's profile as a guide. Anything goes!

Books, music, movies, magazines, bookmarks, stationery, postcards, notecards, book lights, perfume, gift bags, pens, blankets, stuffed toys, magnets, etc! Be creative!

Borders is set to shut their doors at the end of September, so I'm making the deadline October 1st in order to fully maximize any further sales.

I know that Borders is an international company, but this is a regional USA swap because of package weight and because most of the stores are here.

Please join only if you can shop at Borders sometime before the end of September!

No flakers, please! Please have a rating of at least 4.8 and no recent ratings of 1s or 3s. Also, I love you, newbies, but I'm not going to allow any newbies in this swap.

I am new to creating swaps, but I will ban liberally if I think you might flake. I will be checking profiles obsessively!

My local Borders went out in April. It was actually a mourning period for me. I grew up going to Borders. There was still a Borders open in Cincinatti, which I had been visiting when I go down there to visit family and of course now that is closing. Since it is about an hour away I can't go to the sales as much as I would like, but I've been a couple times already and will surely be going more. Short story long, I've got your swap on my watchlist and there is a good chance I will join. Is there anyway you could put some requirements on the swap like no recent 1's or 3's, no unrated swappers... etc that would prevent flakers? This is a swap that sadly might attract them. Thanks

Oh wow, I didn't know this! That sucks!!

Yeah I am more likely to join if there were stricter requirements as I would really hate to get flaked on for a swap like this since there is no way to get an angel in time.

@naturenerd3 Oh, yes, I will do that! I'm new to creating my own swaps and thought I might have missed something! Thank you for pointing that out.

I'm sorry about your local Borders! That first wave of the stores closing in the spring was very sad. A few in my area closed, but my closest one is still open for now though. It will be very sad when it's gone, because I worked there for three years! (I quit in 2007.)

this sucks. I live no where near a Borders

@leirali - is that the Rockaway one on the photo?!!! The ones here went out earlier this year - the Waldenboooks is gone this week I think...

leirali 08/17/2011 #

@susieq11 - I don't think so! I just chose an image at random from Google, ha! It does look like it, though. Yet again, they all look similar anyway. :)

I was just at Borders today shopping their sale! I will likely go again before they close so I am watching this swap.

I'm glad to hear I am not the only one sad about the closings. Thank you for adding the stricter requirements too!

I am sorry to see Borders close as well. I never go to Barnes & Nobles! Borders around me were always full of customers.

leirali 08/23/2011 #

I don't ever want to shop at Barnes & Noble either!

I worked at a Borders that closed in April. It was a MAD HOUSE please when you go in, don't ask the employee's questions like "what is the discount? how much is this? did you find a new job yet?" Those were the questions we HATED to answer. The signs hanging from the ceiling have the discounts on them and every section is marked. Also there are tons of the little "how much" signs that show the original price and then show you the new price with the discount, or just use your phone's calculator! And finally, asking if they have a new job is really kind of personal and stressful because with the liquidation company owning you and making you work crazy hours, you don't have time to look for a new job. Please be nice to the employees and don't ask for a specific book, they are really trying their hardest, I speak from experience! :) I would join this swap but I don't want to go near a Borders right now :(

@justined0414 - I feel for you. I worked for a Waldenbooks that closed and it was a very stressful experience. Customers felt they were entitled to ask all sorts of things! It was really off-putting, and I don't have good memories of those days. I hope no one on Swap-bot would treat our beloved Borders employees like you were treated!
