About Me

Hello!

I am a young student living quietly on the Pacific coast.

There's a lot of things I don't know about myself. I think I am part pioneer. I'm not the most adventurous girl, but I moved here without ever having come to this state before and I am comtemplating moving again in two months to another state I've hardly visited. I am passionate (though sometimes only briefly); I struggle asking for help; I am growing.

I am a student of science and math, but I couldn't tell you yet what I plan to do with my degree. I want to be an IHSS worker; I want to build zero-carbon buildings; I want to teach; I want to be consult with politicians about new science. I want to spin more whole and happy lives from my fingers.

I am an advocate for eating! Hehehe. I am a vegan, and everything I eat is organic and bought in bulk. I'm also a part of a CSA from June through November, so during these months, most of my food was grown forty miles from me. My dream would be to grow all my own food; I'm starting with my first vegetable garden this season. I volunteer on my local farm. Anything green (or purple, or red, or orange...) is good! :) I love small quantities of new herbs to try.

I like warm bodies and nudity and being physically close to people. Sharing bodies is such a human thing!

I like being outdoors. I live right against a Redwood forest. I like the sun, running and hikes and the cold beaches up here. I part time weed/landscape/mow lawns, so I love the smell of mowed grass as much as the dewy ferns in the park. I love the smell of lavender.

Favorite Books

The books on my night table right now include an annual literary anthology of short stories my peers publish, and then "Math through the Ages," "Are Prisons Obsolete?", "Food Politics," "Paradise Wild (Reimagining American Nature)," "Should We Consent to be Governed?" and the latest copy of The Economist.

I love nonfiction! Send me your old textbooks! They push me and give me something to talk about. :)

I have my stories, though, too. My favorite fiction is the grotesque: I like sexual deviancy, illicit, unnatural lead characters. Les Chants de Maldoror, Tropic of Cancer, Nausea, Crime and Punishment, Charles Bukowski, Chuck Palahniuk, and Tao Lin. Short stories and poetry are always nice, too.

Favorite Music

Anything with harmonicas, accordions, trumpets, and hand clapping!

I don't know very much about music, but I lean into the folk sounds. Slow Club is very nice. But I also listen to a lot of the John Mellencamp Pandora station, and "It's Hard to Say," by Sister Hazel over and over. Music that feels easy and free!

Favorite Crafts

Do light bike repairs and gardening count as crafts? I love seeds. Meanwhile, someone teach me how to do electrical wiring and woodworking!

I enjoy writing, but I can't write for myself. (That's why I'm here, so share with y'all!) The same with any kind of paper craft: that kind of creating, for me, is only motivated by community. I love everything homemade I've ever received, from photos to cups and bowls to a 9 ft long desk (!!).

Favorite Television

Seinfeld, mmmm

Favorite Movies

I don't really watch movies too much, and when I do, they tend to be pretty low brow... I'll watch most movies, but how much I'll pay attention to them varies, hehe.

Comment: Thank you for your lovely postcard of the girl on the corn. I am also renting, like that couple you met, and most of the year I am 90% self-sufficient in the garden. I am having to start my vegetable patch over again as when I was in USA and Malaysia recently, it all died. I will send you a postcard in return shortly.
