About Me

Hi, my name is Monica and I am a closet artist. For practical reasons, I am a public school teacher. I have been teaching for over 20 years. As life has gotten more complex, my projects have greatly decreased in size.

I am happily married and have one pre-teen son. We usually have at least one dog. Currently, Iris, a German short-hair, is in residence. We enjoy camping, river and ocean fishing, crabbing, boating, walks on the beach, exploring new places, meeting new people, and time outside.

We have lived in Alaska for over 20 years and still enjoy looking out over the Kachemak Bay every morning. Often there are boats moving about, beautiful sunrises and amazing sunsets, and bald eagles looking for a snack.

Favorite Crafts

Wow!! I enjoy basketry, quilting, applique, knitting, crochet and watercolor. I love looking to see what other artists are creating.

I have invested a lot of time over many years sewing vintage, couture, period costumes and custom garments.

Currently, I knit dish clothes, crochet very small items for other projects, watercolor ATC to 4"x6" sized pieces, make miniature books, and look for other small paper projects.

Preferences

I am working on a much smaller scale now and create small watercolors from ATC sized to 4"x6". I re-purpose often and love to use old items, antiques, vintage buttons, charms, stamps, postcards, handkerchiefs, fabric, lace, trim and other small treasures.

I have been sewing and quilting for a long time and own 8 sewing machines and 1 serger. I have loads of fabric but never seem to have enough. I prefer non-solid, non-directional fabrics. I love decorative threads for free-motion sewing and quilting.

I just discovered that I really like postage stamps. In a trade, my partner sent a little package of stamps and I am just fascinated thinking about all the possibilities.

I am currently making mini books and paper projects.

Favorite Books

Anything Jane Austen. I cannot imagine living then without all the amenities and the rigorous social rules and limitations. But I love the relationships between all the characters and how they survive their place in society.

I usually read books by author or genre. I also enjoy Hilary Mantel, George Eliot, any classic English writer and chick lit. I read a lot about traveling to different places and food.

Currently, planning a trip on the Trans-Siberian railroad.

So we went to New Zealand in the winter for our summer break this year instead. The temperature was still warmer in the winter in the southern hemisphere than in the summer in Alaska.

Comment: Thanks for the lovely postcard. Yes I'm fairly near the Appalachian Mtns. I have done some hiking, to some waterfalls, and at Grandfather Mountain. I am closest to the Blue Ridge Mountains which is a part of the Appalachians. I even went there on my honeymoon. I used to go to Pisgah National Forest as a kid with my family.

Comment: Hi Monica! Thank you very much for the cards. It was very sweet of you to send 2 of them! In The Netherlands we don't have snow at the moment (we had some in March and for us that was already very weird), it is colder than it is supposed to be though :( But I hope spring starts for real soon!

Comment: Oh, no, there are no wild blueberries here. We try to avoid meth heads and muggers! lol ☺ Some people drive across Indiana to Michigan by the lake for blueberry picking. I would like to do that some time. It's amazing where you live! I have a hard time imagining it, thank you for the postcard. Thank you for the painting!

Comment: This swap envie was filled to the brim with everything I love. I love the Batik FQ and the purple crocheded kitchen rag. The postcards of Alaska are breathtaking. The little notebooks, zentangles and stickers are especially lovely. There's a batch of flavored lip balms, soda pop magnet and Hello Kitty bell will look good hanging from anywhere. Last but not least -- My favorite -- COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE! From Alaska with a hilarious illustrated cover. I wish I could give you hundreds of stars. Thanks for making my day!! Susan

Happy New Year '2013 to you Monica! And thank you for the Christmas card you sent me. "Winter" in Florida can look cloudy, humid, cool/cold nights, fog, though the sun could come out tomorrow. Best Wishes!

Yum, I imagine the coolness of Alaska with the Alaska state map postcard you sent to me. Thank you as I didn't have a map postcard from your state. Glad you liked the "little piece of Florida sunshine" I sent to you. When you put it on your car I can imagine the looks you'll get from others up there in the cold North this winter.
