I regularly correspond with penpals. Since letter writing keeps me busy, I don't swapbot as much as I used to--but I love to exchange holiday cards.
November 2021: I can't believe I have been on swapbot for 5 years. 💜 Time for a profile refresh! (...in advance of the year-end holiday card frenzy--a.k.a. the most wonderful mail time of the year.)
Hello swapping friends; welcome to my updated profile. I love everything crafty and hand-made. I spend entirely too much time on the internet looking at art and craft content and tutorials. I enjoy all arts-and-craft supplies and everything that goes along with living a creative life--there isn't a craft I won't attempt! I paint/draw/urban sketch, hand letter (not well ;), hand and garment sew, papercraft, decorate and renovate, try to spin, sometimes knit or crochet, embellish...cute, sparkly, trendy awesomeness is hard to resist.
Re-watchable favorite television shows: Versailles, Outlander. Favorite art programs: Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year/Landscape Artist of the Year, Fake or Fortune. Watching now on Netflix: You. Favorite youtube: Mira Byler (art), Jess Karp (art), the Frugal Crafter, Furniture Fables. Favorite podcasts: Artholes, The Vanished. The Erasable Podcast. Decoder Ring, 99PI.
I like to read, and I read a lot. I generally get most of my books from the new fiction section of my local public library. I regularly use Little Free Libraries (the swapbot for books!). I prefer suspenseful fiction. Some authors I have enjoyed: Riley Sager, Tana French, Carol Goodman. I also like how-to books. Current reading area of interest: how to develop a personal art style, encouraging creativity every day. I keep up with home decorating/craft room organization/craft magazines; "Where Women Create" is a fav. Bag day at a library book sale is one of my favorite days! I miss blogs. I write professionally.
Current nonfiction deep dive: "Van Gogh: The Life" by Gregory White Smith and Steven Naifeh
I also like to listen to audiobooks while I am doing boring tasks around the house. Currently listening to: The Dream Daughter, Diane Chamberlain and Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert
I like independent films and movies about people and their unique stories. I enjoy interesting and offbeat documentaries.
I live in a 200-year-old house. Merging the old with the new is more than a style choice, it is a daily necessity and a license to decorate quirky.
While I will always have a love of shabby chic and farmhouse style, lately I am becoming intrigued by the clean lines and color palette of mid-century modern. I enjoy resale shopping to find treasures from previous eras and lucky-to-me cast-offs that help me explore my time-travel design fantasies.
I am working up the energy to start a drastic interior change-up; I’m just not ready for the mess or all of the work. DIY Danie on youtube makes home reno look more fun than it really is.
My current most time-consuming hobby is making art while listening to art history podcasts.
I collect pins and stickers from the museums/interesting places I visit to put on my traveling art gear. I like to take virtual and continuing education classes for drawing and painting. I usually always travel plein air/urban sketching ready.
I am working on a sketchbook for Volume 19 of the Brooklyn Sketchbook Library. I would love to figure out a way to make my art/craft hobby a career, but that’s a tricky one and I am not looking for a side hustle.
I collect every kind of art supply, new and vintage. I enjoy creating with:
Fountain pens. Fountain Pen Day is the first Friday in November. I love ink samples and ink swatches.
Pointed pens, Nikko G nibs for hand lettering/Spencerian
Markers: fine point, waterproof (Not yet a fan of alcohol markers. Too juicy for me.)
I am pencils crazy: vintage, drawing, blackwing, advertisement—pencil point protectors, erasers, sharpeners, cases, pencil cups—the entire pencil lifestyle ;)
Colored pencils. All brands new and old.
All watercolor paint (especially Schmincke #1, Sennelier #2, anything in a fun/novelty palette #3)
Holbein acryla gouache
Someday I want to figure out alla prima in oil and pastel.
Sketchbooks, putting gesso on objects to paint
Paint by number
Favorite color: the rainbow. I love all colors
I am a stationery addict, particularly Japanese pens and stationery items. I appreciate washi tape samples. I need advice where to purchase more interesting washi. I would like to improve my collection.
I am always looking for fun and interesting ways to store and display my supplies. I am lucky to have a studio, craft and home office area all to myself in my home.
To make collages, ATCs, art journal pages, junk journals, happy mail envies, mixed media, altered art, I collect:
Decorative papers, book pages, classic ads/images, maps
Ephemera, vintage/found images, flat items
Postage stamps, old or new/canceled or unused
Stationery sheets, writing sets, cool stickers (Maybe someday I will give dot grid journaling a try.)
Fiber used to be my main thing, but it’s on the back burner these days. My creative focus is cyclical. While I am not doing as much with fiber these days, I can hand and garment sew, embroider, knit, crochet, weave and spin.
Favorite Fabrics: Cotton (retro prints imported from Japan, Liberty), 100% wool felt
I do nearly all my machine sewing on a Bernina 220, but I also have a working Featherweight and 301 that I will use occasionally. Would love to sew on a treadle. I have a collection of sewing machines that I have stopped adding to; the vintage mini toy ones are my favorite because they are easy to tuck on a shelf.
I have 2 Ashford spinning wheels, a single and double drive – I am a novice. I make ugly yarn.
Some sewing likes: Costumery, vintage sewing stuff (patterns, notions, buttons, equipment, literature, advertising, tools, furniture), friendship bracelets, modern macramé, Zakka, sashiko, Blythe customizing.
Visible mending, Boho Embroidery
THIS AND THAT
Things that catch my eye and a random list of likes:
Vintage equipment (typewriters, dial phones, cameras, airplanes (vintage travel) etc.) Roller skates, cassette tapes.
Vintage post office, anything mail related
1950s kitchen, vintage housewife, vintage office, vintage camping (I own 2 VW buses and a 1969 Beetle: peace love and vdub.) And a 1977 Datsun Z in yellow.
Nancy Drew, classic children's literature
Versailles, Marie Antoinette
The Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship/American Penmanship
Constellation illustrations/Galaxy, skies with beautiful clouds
High-quality stickers, vinyl, die-cut, holographic, custom, etc.
My 2 rescue cats. They showed up and improved my life!
Geocaching. Path tags
Hygge, Scandinavian design
Favorite tea: Teeccino Dandelion Turmeric (best with good chocolate)
Subscriptions: Artsnacks and Trade (coffee). I have Creativebug and Craftsy for inspiration. I love stickii, but I don't have it. I am always so excited when someone shares their stickii stuff with me.
On my to-do list:
1,000 paper cranes
Polymer Clay (kawaii charms)
Inktober (completed 2021)
Make a zine
2022 Craft Resolutions:
To use the arts and crafts supplies in my stash. Stop worrying about wasting the "good stuff." Follow through with the reasons why I bought it all.
Create a 2022 mood board in my studio. Tack up all the interesting bits in pieces of inspiration in a way I see them. Stop losing ideas in drawers and folders.
POSTCARDS: Letterpress and postallove are always appreciated; however, I save and enjoy every postcard I receive. I postcross and penpal. I do not use Instagram or facebook. I do not scrapbook.
