About Me

You will probably notice, if you read on, that my tastes are extremely varied (in fact if you didn't read on, you would probably still manage to find something to please me - especially if it is unusual or obscure in any way). I am a mother to two mesmerisingly beautiful girls, the eldest is nearly five and the youngest (at time of typing) is 10 weeks (and yes, I am one of 'those' Mums who speaks about her children constantly - my world revolves around them and they constantly amaze and inspire me.) I am also Mum to a fur-baby - a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Rudy.

I have recently realised I need to consider myself a writer. Although I am unpublished and unpaid, writing is a field where you have to actually work hard at it before you can ever consider it as a serious vocation.

I write fictional short stories and the (very) occasional novel, often, but not always loosely sf/fantasy.

Things I like to do

  • I love to read and write, my reading tastes are incredibly varied and one of my New Years resolutions was to read at least two new books (i.e. ones previously unread by me) for every book I reread and so far I'm miles ahead :)

    • I like to sew - I make dolls, teddy bears and fairy skirts for my daughter and my sister as well as bags sometimes, but I am not what you would call talented and they are quite special to me, so I don't swap sewn stuff (but would love to swap patterns etc)

    • I like making envies from scrapbooking paper, wrapping paper, magazine pages and calendar pages..

    • Scrapbooking, and related crafts (card making, making my own albums etc).

Colours, patterns etc...

I love love love the colour purple!! My 2nd fave colour is blue and I love the two together and purple and green/turquoise together too. I am not a big fan of pink or yellow, but I can tolerate them ;). I do like the odd paisely pattern but not bold geometric patterns.I also like the old faded postmarked/mappy background print(if that makes any sense!!). Images of dandelions in seed are lovely. Anything unusual too...

Animals

I (and my eldest daughter) love all types of animals. I do have a big soft spot for those not usually loved (snakes, reptiles, snails -so cute! etc). I love frogs, turtles, ladybugs my most favourite animals are the Hippo and Elephant and Dragonfly. I also get a big kick out of all things flamingo, polar bear, sea-horse, dragonfly and gecko (oh yeah, and Meerkats)!

Favorite Books

I love books in general - so does my daughter (and my husband)- the three of us would be happy to sit and read all day!

I read children's books (picture and novels), fantasy, classics, horror (Joe Hill is my favourite horror writer atm) biographies, you name it! I loved the A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones) I do enjoy a lot of the recently popular series including TrueBlood (Sookie Stackhouse series), Twilight, I love Harry Potter and the Hunger Games. My favourite book of all time is "Lullaby" by Chuck Pallahniuk (author of Fight Club) and enjoy most of his books (except 'Haunted' - worst.book.ever). Romanitas trilogy. Wicker. Spooky Little Girl. To name but a few. I am reading a heck of a lot of Dr. Seuss right now too! And I love it. And the Gruffalo!! :)

Favorite Television

QI, Offspring (Australian), Bones, Buffy, Fringe,The Good Wife, Dexter, House. How I met Your Mother, Heros, Lost (though I still haven't finished all the seasons of those two). Homeland. New Girl. But I really get into the toddler programming :D Waybuloos are just great! Sesame Street, Play School, In the Night Garden, Humf, Charlie and Lola, Bubble Guppies... I do have a soft spot for these :)

Favorite Movies

I am a bit of a movie buff (well i was, before becoming a Mum;)). Some of my favourites include Inception, Oz: The Great and Powerful Signs (I like all of M. Night's movies except the Happening- Worst movie ever!!). Juno, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Napoleon Dynamite, Law Abiding Citizen, Fight Club. 27 Dresses... if I were a director (I wish I were) - I would love to direct Lullaby as a movie (my favourite book). And while I do like the twilight books, I am not a fan at all of anything to do with the movie(s).

My daughter

My eldest daughter is nearly five years old and loves fairies and dressing up and make-up. She also loves playing in the dirt, climbing trees and gardening. She loves Monster High (her favourites are Frankie Stein, Dracu-Laura and Heath Burns), Lego minifigures and Lego friends as well as Bubble Guppies, and Team Umizoomi. She is super into Dinosaurs in a big way; she knows about the orders and classifications and families (like Sauropods, Theropods, Hadrosaurs etc) and she knows about the important stuff like ooliths and coprolites :). She can't decide whether she wants to be an animal rescuer, a palaeontologist or a shopkeeper :)

Response: I hoped that would be the case - but with a wishlist of over 1300 books, I couldn't be sure! :) thanks for the heart :)

Comment: A little late, but I understand that sick children take priority! Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the book with me. I love Neil Gaiman, but I haven't read any of his books for younger audiences; this sounds like one I would enjoy.

Comment: Thanks for your review of three things you've been reading . I don't think the Book Thief, as a movie was broadly released here, I don't remember any ads for it.

Comment: Thank you for your thoughtful answers! I know what you mean about this genre being "short-term" compelling, then realizing after the fact that sometimes the books are quite silly. I enjoyed reading your replies. :-)
