Description:

I haven't seen one of these swaps on here for a few months so I think it's time for another one. First of all... this swap is not meant for the faint hearted. ;) When you sign up for this swap you commit to put your heart and many craft supplies into this project. So here's the scoop. You will be assigned a partner. You are to make them a Smashbook/Junk Journal that has plenty of blank spaces for writing/gluing/drawing.... whatever their heart desires. BUT (here's a big but) all blank pages should not 'literally' be a blank white page. Blank pages mean (undecorated patterned or solid colored page... but it is nice to add something like a pocket, a small image/stamps, a quote).

This swap is for a Smashbook sized 6 by 8 inches (12.7cm by 17.78 cm). Direction can go vertical or horizontal. It needs to have at least 60 pages (that is to say 30 pieces of paper) plus include smaller sized pages/pockets/tags. Let's make the book fat and fun! throw in extra items like the tags and stuff.... and Don't forget to make the cover. It should be made using material that is AT LEAST AS STURDY as cereal boxes. Go ahead and use your cereal boxes! Covers should be decorated.

You can use spiral/wire binding. If you you don't have a machine you can use binder rings, but at least 2 please, so it keeps a form of a journal, not flashcards. (borrowed from Orangemama)

Please create pages that your recipient will be able to write on (i.e. no candy wrappers, chip bags and other junk), please don't 'junky' junk in it. There is a fine line between a junk journal and a 'junky' journal that looks trashy and feels yucky. Please err on the side of quality ephemera and papers rather than junk. You can by all means use ephemera, found papers and so on, I just want to ensure it will be used and loved too.

Once you sign up.... you can get to work creating your partner's journal.Once partners are assigned you are welcome to contact your partner, if you wish, or read their profile to know best how to make a journal they will love.

This book should not be done rushed, with little attention put into it. Why don't you create some interactive or bulky pages (pockets with tags, hidden journaling, ribbons...) throw in a map, a page from a dictionary or book, an intersting photo or postcard... go to town!!!

Final things- when you send your package out make sure and send it in a box or a bubble mailer. Make sure it can travel without getting banged up. Only open to US and Canada due to shipping costs. Sorry!! Must have at least a 4.8 rating with no recent 1 or 3's.

Is it okay with you if I bind the book I make by sewing it?

snowqueen1426 06/29/2012 #

You first said 30 pages.. then said 30 pieces of paper.... To me a piece of paper has a front side...page 1 and a back side ..page 2.. So we are looking at designing/creating....60 pages.. Is that correct.. TY

soyprincesa2 06/29/2012 #

Snowqueen1426- I'm so sorry... yes... 30 pieces of paper... 60 pages (or sides). The minimum is 30 papers... but please don't count little tags as part of the 30.
Joyceann888- Yes, sewing it is fine. Any binding method that keeps the pages together well is fine.

Creativemind 06/29/2012 #

One other question, does the sign up date really have to be so far off? I get that you want to give people enough time to get this done properly, but the wait is honestly going to kill me. LOL

snowqueen1426 06/29/2012 #

thank you : )

mizvicky 06/29/2012 #

For those that need some ideas, you tube is full of help. Tangie Baxter is AMAZING. . Just a FYI ...:)

soyprincesa2 07/ 3/2012 #

Creativemind... I will see if our other person who has signed up would like to move the date closer and if so... I will let you know.

occasiongb6557 07/ 3/2012 #

OMG ! Your getting my inspiration going for this one and thank you for keeping it regional. Less money on overseas postage means more goodies added to the book....watching for now but seriously considering........

occasiongb6557 07/ 3/2012 #

back again,
I went to you tube and looked at the tangie site, is that the look your thinking of or something more to the photo you posted above? Just need clarification because I see the two totally different. thanks

snowqueen1426 07/ 5/2012 #

I have this on watch right now also.. and I've watched youtube....and some of that is YUCK to me.. I would prefer the example on the swap.. Some of the youtube stuff is total GRUNDG.. and that is not my style.. I plan to sign up later but still watching..

Creativemind 07/ 5/2012 #

@ occasiongb6557 and snowqueen1426, I think this is a either or type thing. You can make either a smash book (the picture reference) or junk journal hence why she wrote it as such. Myself, I'm doing the smash book; not really a fan of junk journals, but I wouldn't mind if that's what my partner sends me of course.

occasiongb6557 07/ 5/2012 #

thank you for your clarification.

mizvicky 07/ 5/2012 #

Yes , either or I suppose. But I don't think the Host wants a composition book. It was just an idea of how to decorate pages:)

mizvicky 07/ 5/2012 #

Ok. I think this is more along the lines as what I'm going to do. But I have to use binder rings bc I dint have a bind it all:(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdsI6qP5Po&feature=youtubegdata_player

soyprincesa2 07/ 6/2012 #

Hello everyone. To clarify a few things.... this journal needs to be more than a composition book. It should be loose pages that you have bound. I have made two of these before and they include some high quality double sided scrapbook paper, some single sided scrapbook paper (and I decorated the back), pages from dictionaries, maps, house plans, fronts of note cards, library cards, journaling tags and other tidbits. I am asking that it be more "Smashbook" than Junk journal. I am actually going to change the swap title to reflect that. I guess I'm asking that if it's a junk journal... that it still be a piece of ART. I have only been creating these books since February... and the lines are a little blurry between the two types. Please don't make a 'junky' journal. Make it beautiful. Decorate the cover... make it something you think your partner will love. I like the link that Vicky sent me to the You Tube video... it's my style as is the picture on this swap page.... they are both different, but both are fun. I know that I can take almost any style of book and make it my own when I add my own notes, pictures, and memorabilia. Here is the link mizvicky sent and it's perfect just copy and paste into address bar-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdsI6qP5Po&feature=related

here is another Smashbook video... the first part is a little slow.. just skip first couple minutes.... but worth checking out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hqqc6g3Lr1I&feature=related

and This is a simpler one... but still really well done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8mbgoIe728&feature=related

As with all swaps... we can try and get some good guidelines hammered out and then it's up to each individual to make it unique and quality and something to be treasured. Please let me know if you have more ideas. If it goes well... I would love to have another on in a few months.

snowqueen1426 07/ 6/2012 #

Good videos.. Youtube. Thanks... I'm on the same track... I've using the binder rings also.... One thing I like about them is I can move pages around or easily as page in certain areas.. thanks for clarification..

snowqueen1426 07/ 6/2012 #

Thank you for clarifying that Soyprincess!!:) I just saw this video and fell in love with the way she decorated the cover. Drool

mizvicky 07/ 6/2012 #

I have already started mine. My wonderful hubby cut my front cover and back cover out of cereal boxes. I have gone through my paper and selected 30 sheets, found tags, paper clips brads, charms, lace... What have you ...

I have this cool idea to get quarter money roll and decorate it for a little tag:)

snowqueen1426 07/ 6/2012 #

I've got a bunch of stuff together.. papers. envelopes, card stock, Binder rings, but I'm going to wait until partners are assigned to try and incorporate some of my partners likes. My problem with be trying to keep from "over" decorating.... Need to leave plenty of areas for my partner to add to..

Creativemind 07/ 6/2012 #

Can't help myself!!!! I started on mine the day I signed up. Have a bind-it-all, but it's so thick that I had to use binder rings instead because the o-rings I have aren't big enough and still may be adding more stuff/pages. It took me forever to come up with the perfect cover, bound it yesterday and now trying to t.hink of other goodies to add to it. Hope whoever my partner is likes it.

occasiongb6557 07/ 7/2012 #

This is going to be fun, I haven't done a journal swap in a very long time and Im looking forward to creating for someone else again. I am using binder rings as well, leaves more options available.

mizvicky 07/ 7/2012 #

I want the cinch... It's $109 at hobby Libby . They have a 40% off coupon. ContemPlating .... Hmmmmm

snowqueen1426 07/ 7/2012 #

LOL!... Well I just took a break...worked on it for about an hour.. So glad I'm not the only one eager to get partners assigned.. This has been fun.. I also have the biggest rings I could find.. and wish I had bigger ones..

occasiongb6557 07/ 8/2012 #

I just had a creative overload day for ideas and have been busy putting them together. I love the excitement thats going on with this thread, it keeps the momentum going.

mizvicky 07/ 8/2012 #

Yes! I think conversation in a big swap is great!!!!

I found my binder rings at wal Mart in the school supplies section. Got 4 sets for $2. 2 sets of big ones and 2 sets of smaller ones.. I should have grabbed more..

7Gypsies ( I think?) sells the cable rings. I don't know if they are any bigger than the ones I have, but they are a bronzed color ... Antiqued . Really pretty. They are higher, though.

Going to be alone tOmorrow , so guess what I will be doing??!! Lol

occasiongb6557 07/ 8/2012 #

I can't walk away from this project.

mizvicky 07/ 8/2012 #

Then DON'T !! Lol

I'm steady watching videos on smash books:)

mizvicky 07/ 8/2012 #

I found some printables for these books. I will add links in a bit.

mizvicky 07/ 8/2012 #

Here ya go for vintage printables. Nice, on cards tick:)

I have been on Pinterest for days pinning different images of free or cheap digital ephemera for this album. I am the organizer and am dying for the partner assigning date to get here. I pushed it out so far so that we could have time to start planning it out. But NOW I wish the partner assign date was sooner rather than later and then give us a month to create the book... with partners assigned ... instead of 3 weeks.... though 3 weeks is still a long time. I have been cutting my papers to 6x8.... and after my hubby finished off the box of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal.. I took the box upstairs and cut it up into 6 1/4 x 8 1/4. I am having so much fun with this. Since we are having a lot of open dialogue about what we are working on in this project..... Let me throw a question out there: What is your style? Do you prefer clean lines and simpel? cluttered and colorful? Shabby chic? English county with flowers and lace? Mod? Vintage? Romantic? Please share!!! It will help your future partner tailor it to you even better!

soyprincesa2 07/ 9/2012 #

I like Retro style. I like clean MOD styles. I like doodle styles. I like travel motifs. Especially road trip motifs. We do lots of roadtrips here in the Southwestern USA. I like fun images of the past. I like things that are vintage. I love old ads. I love any ephemera that has room to make notes or lists... or just write a word. I don't love pastels. I love bright colors. I like bold colors. I hate flourescents. I really like the Tropical colors- caribean blue, and a gorgeous non pastelly shade of pink are my favorite. I do love red, white and black together as well. The styles I don't like are Western, charactor (any commercial charactor.. like Disney anything, Sponge Bob, Hello Kitty). I love notepaper/ledger paper. I love library cards and journaling tags

mizvicky 07/ 9/2012 #

Oh my gosh!! Soy princess!! You and I have the same taste!!!!

I don't mind the bright colors, but I do not like Disney!!! Or western theme.

I'm game for anything..

I like surprises.. Bits n pieces tucked here and there..

I like ribbons and paper clips and beads...

Pretty much anything goes...:)

Creativemind 07/ 9/2012 #

O.M.G!! I cannot find the perfect journaling stamp to save my life and I just came across this idea and thought I would share it thinking maybe some of you have the same problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og2q6agZxwU

Creativemind 07/ 9/2012 #

Oh, I'm not picky, but I don't like cartoon themed things either (at least not for a smash book), So I'm the same as you two soyprincessa2 and mizvicky.

soyprincesa2 07/ 9/2012 #

Creative mind, That was a cool video idea. Luckily, I have been collecting journal ing stamps for many years. I have some by Stamping Up and others by other scrapbooking/stamping companies. I love the ones that look like office supplies and composition paper. Not so into the cutsy journaling spots.

Creativemind 07/ 9/2012 #

Yeah, I have some too, but they're either too small for the piece of paper I want to stamp on or vice versa, too big. I don't have many though, cuz like I said, just can't find any I like, so that idea is perfect for me so I can custom fit.

mizvicky 07/10/2012 #

Now THAT was neat!! Thanks for sharing:)

mizvicky 07/10/2012 #

Here is a picket tutorial . Very easy and quick ...

mizvicky 07/10/2012 #

To make links clickable , do this [then write what you want] a ( add link here ) No spaces whatsoever .

Example - this is how I did the clucks link above

[Here is a picket tutorial ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf5l8CLWrqY&feature=youtubegdataplayer )

No spaces, remember! Easy! I just figured it out:)

mizvicky 07/10/2012 #

**clicks not cluks

RainyC 07/11/2012 #

If the due date stays the way it is I just may join. This would be my first ever "Smash Journal" I "really" want to make one.. my first concern was NO binding machine.. a friend volunteered to "GIVE ME" (yes GIVE ME) her extra machine so if it happens I think I may just DIVE in..

soyprincesa2 07/11/2012 #

Join us RainyC. I am not going to touch the date. Most of us have gone ahead and gotten to work on ours and once partners are assigned we will personalize them more.

snowqueen1426 07/11/2012 #

I found "B I G" ring binders at Staples.. I think they are a #9.. comes as package of 9

mizvicky 07/11/2012 #

Wow!! I like the big rings!!!!!

Rainy!!!! Join us!!!!! It'll be fun<3

RainyC 07/11/2012 #

On the fence here.. :) But the funny thing is that I started to pull papers and "stuff" out last night.. but cut my chip board the wrong size.. its a bit larger.. so may have to re-size that a bit..

mizvicky 07/11/2012 #

My hubby cut mine exactly 6x8. I really wanted it 1/4 inch bigger in all sizes, but , then again, all my ribbons, clips and things can show really well on the edges:)

mizvicky 07/11/2012 #

I'm really wanting to try my hand at a little accordion folder tucked away in a pocket.. Anyone ever make these to add photos to?!?!

mizvicky 07/11/2012 #

Ok here is some great ideas for pockets for our SmasBooks!!! Live the simplicity! A lot of these are free!!!!

occasiongb6557 07/11/2012 #

I love all things girly, shabby chic, victorian, soft pastels, blingy like rhinestones but not glittery. I also love turquoise and lime green with pink....not to picky here thouogh. Anything I receive I am sure I will like.

siouxx05 07/12/2012 #

Waaaaaah.... I want to be an American or Canadian - just for this swap...! /whine

occasiongb6557 07/13/2012 #

I spent most of the day working on this journal and it was sooooo relaxing I didn't want to have to stop. I plan on posting a sneak peak to my flickr page soon but will let you know when it goes up if you want to peek at it.

occasiongb6557 07/14/2012 #

Uploaded a photo but there isn't much to see because its only a sneak peak for my partner.

BluGinhm 07/14/2012 #

I love Tangie Baxter's stuff! Not junky, but definitely smash! The only thing I didn't like was maybe a little too flowery for me. My style is 1950s-1960s. I like things that either look modern (i.e. Airstream trailer look), old (antique documents that have been in an attic for a century), retro (not the diner look, but the look the average person would have had in their homes) or travel (travel elements of the late 1940s and 1950s, when people started having more free time to tool around the country - maps, vintage National Parks, road assistance and vintage cars and campers stuff). I love turquoise, orange, yellow and lime green. I also love the pastels of the 1950s - pale yellow, pale mint green, pale pink, pale robin's egg blue. I like pockets and envelopes and vintage or vintage-look smash items. I like stuff everywhere! I like pages made from really unusual things (like I received one not too long ago where the cover was made from a vintage game board - a little big for a book this size, but gives you some idea) - I like to find something new and interesting on every page!

mizvicky 07/15/2012 #

Blu- I live blue and orange together. Not navy blue but a pretty turquoise blue. I need to update my profile so bad! Lol

Angie Bacter made that junk journal look fun..

I also love pockets and hidden goodies in a journal.

I'm working on a Month In My Life journal for a private swap, where you have to journal/Junk/Smash a page for each day in July.

It's pretty time cunsing but I love it.

I have a friend that works at McDonalds that brought me some FF holder .. I painted them and flattened em , using them as a pocket!!!

It's neat what you can add to a journal or smash book to make it interesting!!

I'm looking forward to a finished product for this swap, so I can get it sent to my partner!!!

occasiongb6557 07/16/2012 #

Almost dfone with my minimum number of pages, just need to go back and add some finishing touches.

mizvicky 07/16/2012 #

:)

snowqueen1426 07/16/2012 #

Well i've got a lot done but leaving room to add ideas from my partners profile.. Sure would hate the journal to be all pastel and victorian.. and find out that my partner prefers bright colors in an abstract style...

occasiongb6557 07/17/2012 #

thats why I tended to use generic papers until I know who my partner is.

snowqueen1426 07/17/2012 #

Same here... I've been journaling for about 14 yrs.. and the style and creative minds of the artists.. just blow me away.. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, it.. So many techniques,, tools,, mediums.. to use now... I feel like a kid again..( So many new toys to play with..LOL!) Just so much fun.. !!

mizvicky 07/19/2012 #

I have alreadyy completed the cover. I am about to wrap this up , just going to wait until partners are assigned before I add anymore items to the inside:)

CraftyLass 07/19/2012 #

Y'all are having WAYYYY to much fun on this one, without me..... :(

PLEEEEAAAASSEEEE please please make the next one international!?!

soyprincesa2 07/19/2012 #

Crafty Lass, if you ever want to do a private swap with the same specifications as this swap I would love to do one with you. We will do this swap again 'international' very soon. Just let us get partners assigned... and then we can talk about it. ;)

CraftyLass 07/20/2012 #

I'd definately be up for a private swap with you! I'll let you get this done first though ;) I've got enough stuff to keep me outta mischief for a bit - I'm about done with the basics on a less involved version of this swap: Start a Smash Book (DIY) and looking forward to adding the details, also, I'm doing some pages for mizvicky for another one: Pages For A Friend, Round 2 :D

An International version would be awesome - drop me a pm if you go ahead with it - I'm definately in!!!

mizvicky 07/20/2012 #

Woo hoo!! I can't wait for that Crafty Lass!!! I sent mine off yesterday !! That was a fun swap wasn't it!!!???

occasiongb6557 07/21/2012 #

Moved myself to watching for now---starting to have second thoughts with what I have done so far.

mizvicky 07/21/2012 #

Awwwwe....

soyprincesa2 07/23/2012 #

occasiongb6557.... we will miss having you join us... but I totally get it if you are overwhelmed with other swaps...but if this swap seems too much... then maybe join us on another round. :)

occasiongb6557 07/24/2012 #

not overwhelmed, just second guessing what Ive done so far, still working on the project though and will make my decision soon.

occasiongb6557 07/24/2012 #

ok, Ive thought about this ALL DAY and I DO

occasiongb6557 07/24/2012 #

duh!.....what a goof

want to make one of these and share it, I was worried my work wouldn't be good enough for my partner and I have decided I am just going to focus on my style and relax and not get hung up on profile based likes--after all we can add or repurpose as we see fit, right? So.....back to work!

snowqueen1426 07/24/2012 #

Goodness deep breath..... ((HUGS)) just have fun with it.. I don't think it would be possible to have the whole journal based around someones profile. (that would really be asking too much in my opinion) I think that would be supppper hard.. I'm doing a bunch of different stuff and will add in something to please my partner... perhaps a special fold out or maybe the front/back cover.. I've always felt the techniques and style of everyone is very special.. It's a small piece of who we are...and we share it with those we swap with.. My style is pretty wonkie and changes about every 5 yrs.. No problem.. I'm a happy camper.. and evolving so to speak.. LOL! Just have fun... : )

soyprincesa2 07/25/2012 #

I totally get being worried that your style won't be liked or that your work isn't enough. I just sent off my first swap-bot Smashbook swap today. Man that was hard! I got super attached to it! I loved it.

mizvicky 07/28/2012 #

Ok... I had that same fear... Since it is my first one to do, I was scared, but after I relaxed some, it was actually fun!!!

I'm just about done. Just need to put it all together. As soon as partners are assigned , I will check her profile and add some goodies she can use , and send it on!!!

This was really fun to do.

I will be putting pix on my flickr in a few days:)

snowqueen1426 07/29/2012 #

Well pooh!!... I missed the sign up. SIGH.

soyprincesa2 07/29/2012 #

I have relisted round 2 of this same swap... So sign up snowqueen1426!

soyprincesa2 07/29/2012 #

Here is the link for the new swap.. http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/126071?new=1

snowqueen1426 07/29/2012 #

Was the date for this one changed?... I thought sure I had signed up but it's not on my dashboard.. : (

soyprincesa2 07/30/2012 #

I found out that we are going to be out of town for four days with no internet connection when the partners should be assigned... so I went ahead and ended the swap and assigned partners before we leave. I thought you had signed up too! Since we hadn't had any new signups for about 4 days I went ahead and closed it so that you guys wouldn't have to wait extra days to get your partner. The mail by date is still the same. So sorry snowqueen! I am sure that if you wanted to do a private swap there are many of us who would love to do one with you if your book is almost ready to go!

snowqueen1426 07/30/2012 #

sad.......very sad. Moving on.

mizvicky 07/30/2012 #

Snow queen, I'll do a private swap with you:)
