Description:

It's still winter, but we can already start planning and making a few handmade prayer flags to hang in the garden.

From the website: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/make-a-prayer-flag-how-to.html "Spring is here, and the winds of change are blowing; the sky fills with birds and returning life is everywhere. In this season of airy expansiveness and hope, we can send out our wishes for peace, healing, and harmony on the winds with a simple prayer flag, inspired by a traditional Tibetan Buddhist practice. Here’s how to make a prayer flag."

For this swap, you will make 4 prayer flags.

One for each partner. Please make them 6" x 9", unless your partner specifies otherwise. You may post here, if you have specific requests for the size of the flag you'd like (so it matches the others you already may have).

I prefer cotton fabric, but you may specify here if you prefer another type of fabric. Decorate these creatively... with fabric paint, beads, buttons, or ribbons.

You may even post here if you have a specific prayer or wish you'd like on the flag you receive.

This is INTERNATIONAL, as one flag won't weight very much for mailing/postage

this is a wonderful idea.

Will the sender just sew the channel for the string and then the recipient takes care of stringing on their own string?

lob 01/ 4/2009 #

Yes, just sew a channel for the string. You're only sewing one flag per person. Each person can string their own flags.

Newbies welcome, I hope, I hope? This looks wonderful, the most exciting swap I have run across so far!

LavenderLizard 01/15/2009 #

I'd love to receive prayers for healing or artistic inspiration, but please don't feel too limited by that request!

LaTosi 01/15/2009 #

This is for one panel to 4 different people right?

lob 01/18/2009 #

Yes, one small flag each for 4 people. They are approximately 6" x 9" for each small flag.

I love it...this is a wonderful idea!! These would make wonderful gifts to send your friends just to let them know you are thinking of them and sending blesssings for the spring....

I went out today and got fabric to make several flags in multiple colors, with fabric glue, so no sewing for around six dollars..I plan to make a set for my daughter's college dorm room as well. Everyone I've told of this project thinks it's wonderful...and very very cost effective.

Does fabric glue hold up outdoors in the rain? Just wondering...

MistiKo 01/20/2009 #

I was thinking the same thing about the fabric glue. I guess we can always find out.

I've never made these before and can't wait to try...on the way to the store now! Are these usually carefully hemmed and tailored looking or are they more rustic and unhemmed?

countrygirl58 01/22/2009 #

I have the same question, hemmed or unhemmed. The glue I got was washable, so I imagine it's weatherproof. I did one as a sample last night hemmed and they are pretty small..but I guess easier for mailing that way...please advise...I am afraid unhemmed would fray, especially since they are so small.

MistiKo 01/22/2009 #

I think the "traditional" flags have raw edges, and I've just read that the fabric is usually torn rather than cut. They are supposed to fray and fade and age over time as the prayers are taken by the wind to the universe. I plan to make mine unhemmed. Unless you are using really thin of slippery fabric, they won't come completely unraveled.

If you want to prevent fraying, you could cut the fabric with pinking shears, or use fray check, or even a bead of the fabric glue around the raw edge.

I love the unhemmed look, personally, and like the fact that they change over time. It is a great symbol... I've hand-dyed the fabric for mine, and plan to use hand-carved stamps for decoration (using Stazon ink, which held up well on my last outdoor set) and alphabet stamps for the prayer...I LOVE making these!

prayer flags are not meant to be perm. they are meant to break down and go back to the earth over time. It is part of how the prayer is communicated to the universe.

I can't wait! I've never seen a swap like this! It is going to be very exciting!!!

mindy 01/27/2009 #

i realize some of my partners may already be making flags and that is ok, all prayers are good. in fact prayers for all that is good, health and prosperity would be my request. thanks!
