QnT HST’s black with batik

8-15-21 thru 9-15-21

--2 partners

--3 HSTS to each partner

--total 6 HSTS mailed

--mailed size 4 ½” X 4 ½” each HST

We will be making our HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES (HST’s) with one side plain black and the other side any batik print senders care to use- except try to avoid a lot of black or gray in your batiks. We want a contrast between the 2 sides of our HSTS.

Imagine how pretty this will be with the black contract and beautiful batiks on the other side.

A. Pick 6 different 5-inch by 5-inch batik print charms from your stash (or cut some if you wish)

B. Gather (cut) 6 black or tone-on-tone black charms, also 5-inch by 5-inch

C. Follow instructions below for making HSTS…they are so easy; you will love them!

D. In this swap you will end up with 6 different HSTS for yourself and 6 to send to your partners. Each partner gets 3 for a total of 6 HSTS mailed.

Making Half-Square Triangles:

  1. take 2 fabric charms of equal size (example: 5-inches by 5-inches)

  2. we are using one black and one batik print charm for this swap series

  3. on wrong side of the lightest colored charm draw a diagonal pencil line from upper left corner to lower right corner

  4. place the 2 charms in a stack right side together

  5. stitch one-quarter inch seam on either side of the drawn line

  6. cut on drawn line

  7. press open both HSTS (press to the dark side)

  8. square them up (example: to 4 ½” X 4 ½”) (google this if you need more help, because a picture of squaring up is much easier to understand – to me that is)

  9. follow these instructions for all 6 HSTS, which will yield 12 HSTS, 6 different HSTS for you and 6 to mail to partners.

Have fun, do neat work, and swap-on!

NOTE: Try to avoid batiks with lots of black or gray in them...the brighter colors will pop better against the back half of the block. I think this new swap series will be a good one...lots of folks interested and the blocks are sooooooo pretty.

enjoy!

Dottie, does the quilt in the picture you used above on this swap have name and a place were I can go and find a how-to? It would be fun to make.
