Description:

I snagged @sweetclementine s reference to a certain blog and viola' - instant swap!

We will have several Rounds of this particular swap. Should be an easy, Beginner to Experienced rated swap!

For this swap-if we have enough sign up, you should receive 12 Blocks!! YAY! The Nine Block is fairly simple to sew, so hopefully it can include most of us!!

Swap Description

  • We will be making the Nine Patch Blocks according to the Description here Charm Square Quilt.
  • You WILL be cutting these down the center as described in the tutorial. This will give you Four (4) Squares.
  • You will have Three (3) partners.
  • You will send the Four (4) Squares cut from the same Nine Block to your partner.

The reason I say we will make sure to send the same Four squares cut from each Nine Block to the same partner, is the fact that laying these in different directions changes the size a bit. This way, they can have all four pieces from one Nine Block and decide which way they would like to make their top!

  • Please make sure you use different fabrics for each of your Nine Fabrics, as I think this will make for a more interesting block look!
  • You will use 5" (12.7 cm) fabric charms to sew your block, as stated in the tutorial.
  • According to the tutorial, this will make your Blocks 7" (17.78 cm).
  • Please list in the comments section 3-4 color choice preferences OR if you prefer, list whether you like bolds, brights or pastels, etc.

As I said, we will have several rounds of this, hopefully gaining enough to make something decent sized!

If this isn't clear in ANY way..please let me know!! Any questions..PLEASE ask!!!

I have made 3 or 4 quilts using this chopped up nine-patch method, it's fun and easy but I like more coherence in the final quilt than the really very scrappy look this swap would give me. As I get older I'm getting fussier about color in scrappy quilts. Only a matter of MY taste and doesn't apply to anyone else. I'll skip this but I think it's a wonderful design idea and would urge others to try it and possibly then be inspired to make one entirely of their color/fabric choices.

So we make three 9-patches, and use one for each partner?

MamaD 08/17/2009 #

Correct! Although, each 9-patch will then be cut into 4 pieces. Does that make sense?

snailgirl 08/17/2009 #

This is awesome!!! I have been playing with ideas to use some of the charm squares I have accumulated... Thanks!!!

SweetClementine 08/18/2009 #

Prewashing fabrics? Yea or nay?

MamaD 08/18/2009 #

hmm...good question! Normally I'd say yes, but I did see a few comments from people saying they like it the other way...what do you all think? Oh, and just a thought, if someone is using charm squares they've swapped, maybe not all of them have been pre-washed?

So...no?

TC 08/18/2009 #

Pre-washing: NAY. If there's any shrinkage at all when you wash a pre-cut 5" square, you're going to have trouble making your blocks to size.

I'd like to suggest some kind of theme to tie the 3 sets of swapped blocks together - like, all florals. Or all pinks/reds/whites. Or something. Otherwise, you're likely to get a set of blocks featuring Amy Butler bold florals from one swapper, and 30's reproduction fabrics from another, and it will be hard to make all 12 blocks work together in one project.

I was thinking the same thing actually last night @TC I made up 4 sets of blocks in about an hour, and was thinking..we need some sort of "order" to this swap!

I'm thinking that I am going to Edit the swap to the following:

Please list in the comments section 3-4 color choice preferences OR if you prefer, list whether you like bolds, brights or pastels, etc.

MamaD 08/19/2009 #

My color preferences are:

  • Lavender, purple or any variation of purple
  • Light green
  • Creme, White
  • Pink

(Think pastel) =D

crochetjunkie 08/20/2009 #

@dBowie you have such fabulous swap ideas!!! I am sticking with you!!

My color preferences:

  • Oranges
  • Reds
  • Olive Greens
  • Tans

THINK AUTUMN

pahasiga 08/20/2009 #

So... do I get it right... I will need to get 27 different fabrics according to my partners' tastes?

MamaD 08/20/2009 #

Only fabric scraps! The fabrics are only 5" squares- so if you've possibly swapped fabric charms before, maybe you already have them. OR if you are a pack rat (like myself) maybe you will have the enough for the 5" pieces?

MamaD 08/20/2009 #

OH, and Crochetjunkie..the credit goes to @sweetclementine !!

TC 08/28/2009 #

I'd like any combination of:
- bright pink
- lime green - white

I'm making a little quilt for my new grand-niece, and will be combining the blocks with this swap with some others from previous swaps.

bettflow09 08/30/2009 #

This is going to be so much fun!!!

Let's see.....Here's a list of my favorite colors. Any combination of any of these colors would be great:)) Tans, creams, beige, light-medium browns, burgundy, sage green, hunter green, black background with small print.

Hope I'm not sounding too picky here, lol. The only colors I really don't like at all are pastels and orange.

notalwayspink 08/31/2009 #

My color preference is definitely PINK!!!! I love all things pink and retro Thanks I am sooooooo looking forward to this swap/

notalwayspink 08/31/2009 #

Ok rewrite... I love pink for my colors but any brights together with it is great. Like yellow green blues and white with pink NOT neon just brighter true colors Think 1950 colors. There is only one color I truly do NOT like at all and that is orange so please no orange in any shade.

mlookyloo1 08/31/2009 #

any color is good

jerih 09/ 1/2009 #

I would like olive green and autumn colours.
