Description:

This is such a simple quilt block and it's definitely addictive!! So get out your scraps and leftover jelly roll strips and join us. We will be making 4 blocks each for our 2 partners (a total of 8 blocks).

Thanks to @crochetjunkie who started this swap last year and has graciously allowed me to take it over. I am hoping that this will become a monthly swap, so that by the end of the year we should all have at least one quilt worth of squares.

This swap is for all levels of quilters. It doesn’t matter - you just need to be accurate.

Since the weight of the finished squares will be relatively light, this swap will be open to all.

INSTRUCTIONS:

We will use the foundation FABRIC method. This means that we use a piece of muslin or flannel as the base for our square, to stabilize the square and also to make it easier to put it together. Please use this method –do NOT use the paper piecing method.

The blocks we are making to send will be 6 ½ inches. I would recommend that you make your fabric base at least 6 ¾ inches, so that if there is any “shrinkage” due to sewing, there is a bit of extra room to compensate for it.

REMINDERS:

--- It is very important to iron each strip down as you sew it.
--- The same fabric can only be used in a square 2 times.
--- The squares are supposed to be scrappy. The scrappier the better! So please don’t try to coordinate things. Just grab a strip and sew.
--- Strips should be no wider than 1 ½ inches finished (after sewn down). This will allow for the squares to have about 10-14 different fabrics each.
--- Please use decent quality 100% cotton fabric.

RULES (sorry about that):

--- You must have a rating of at least 4.90 with no “1”s in the last 3 months.
--- You need to have at least 10 mailed/package swaps that you have been rated for.
--- I will review each profile before partners are assigned, and reserve the right to remove you from the swap if need be.
--- If there are “circumstances”, email me and we will try to work things out.

Here’s a suggestion from @junemoon from a previous string square swap. --- "The quickest way is to use an assembly line method. Make a pile of your muslin/flannel squares and a pile of your strips; sew a strip onto each square, then iron the whole pile at once. By alternating sewing and ironing, you're not moving from sewing machine to ironing board every 10 seconds."

Also, you don't really need to wait til partners are assigned. So get out the old machine, and have some fun!!!

Hope you will join us!!

This is my first hosting of a swap, so if I have forgotten something, please feel free to remind me. Hope that you will all join in, this swap is so much fun - both to make and receive!!!!

I never made a quiltblock on a sewing machine, but this is a great one to give it a try. If I can finish them before the end of the month I will join this swap. If I understand correctly, the blocks are 6 1/2 inch and after you sew the blocks together (when you got them from your partners) they are 6 inch?

And maybe something you can add: only 100 % cotton fabric.

Thanks for taking this over!! I'm looking forward to another round of these.

@Annet - thanks for the suggestion about fabric content. I have noted it above. Also, you are correct - the squares that you send to your partners should measure 6-1/2 inches. Hope you are able to join us.

I did a couple string quilt swaps last year and they are addictive -- easy to do, good way to use up scraps and I've already made one baby size quilt from the ones I got and an equal number I added.

im a little confused about the foundation muslin thing. we cut a muslin square of 6 1/2 in and measure on there? or do we actually sew that onto our block?

channon16 01/26/2010 #

okay i checked out the tutorial i understand a little better but im still confused :( i even searched youtube to see if they had a video but nada. im a visual learner. the part im confused about it once we sew the first part onto the foundation and iron how do we add the next piece on so that too is sewed onto the foundation? i feel like a big dummy but i really want to do this swap someone please help!
