QnT Appliquéd Dresden Plate Block Swap

4/11/11 thru 5/14/11

--One partner

--One Dresden Plate block – finished block size 12 ½” (made from 100% cotton)

--white quality background fabric (may be white on white or solid white)

--plate spokes in cheerful scrappy print colors (no predominately black, brown or gray please)

--each Dresden plate should have a yellow center (centers can be solid yellow or tone on tone yellow or yellow with a little white only)

--put your name on TOP of one of the spokes on your 12 ½” block (use fabric markers or embroidery) so once the quilt is assembled we will know who sent us each block

This will be a scrappy quilt block swap and all the blocks will be variations of Dresden plates with white backgrounds and cheery yellow centers. Your finished block must be 12 ½”. Here are your block options:

---you may want to make one large Dresden plate to cover the whole 12 ½” block, (except the ¼” seam allowance).

---or you may want to make multiple smaller Dresden Plates on your 12 ½” block (be sure to leave ¼” seam allowance around outside of 12 ½” block)

---or you could do the ½ Dresden plate on two corners of the block, (each corner will look like an opened fan)

--or you can do the ¼ Dresden plate on all 4 corners of the block, as long as your finished block measures 12 ½”.

Always allow at least a ¼” seam allowance around the outside of your 12 ½” block.

Use your imagination to create beautiful blocks you’ll be proud to swap. If you want to embellish the Dresden plate, make sure all embellishments are machine washable. You might even want to you make it a crazy quilt Dresden plate with embroidery work, lace, buttons and trim.

We will make this an International swap because it should not be too expensive to ship one block to one partner.

If this swap is well received we’ll have at least 12 to 16 swaps.

feedback is welcome....also if anyone would be so kind as to offer a Dresden Plate tutorial link as a comment, I would greatly appreciate it!

thank you TC, you are the best!

Is it unfinished 12 1/2" or finished 12 1/2"?

perkl8r 03/30/2011 #

12 1/2" quilt block (just a completed quilt block, no batting or backing) that measures 12 1/2" square with a Dresden Plate appliqued to the surface

I'm thinking "finished" as in the block is ready when received in the mail to attach to other Dresden Plate blocks add batting and backing and start hand or machine quilting the 3 piece sandwich together.

I sure hope that clarifies and doesn't complicate things for you. Please let me know if I'm as clear as mud! We'll get someone else to help us both out!

In quilting terms, "unfinished" means the quilt block WITH seam allowances. See definition here. So this block will be 12.5" unfinished when you send it to your partner, and 12" finished when it's sewn up in a quilt or other project.

Well, now that I re-read the swap, maybe I'm wrong about the dimensions that perkl8r wants. It could be that the block should be 13" unfinished, 12.5" finished. I think we need clarification. :)

wow, I guess I am not very clear in my instrucitons.....the block you send to your partner should be 12 1/2" ( unfinished per thew wonderful, helpful data supplied by TC....thank you dear!)

so if you are doing one Dresden plate in the middle of that 12 1/2" block, you can make the plate up to 12 1/4" leaving a 1/4" seam allowance for a total block size of 12 1/2"........ :^)

one 12 1/2" quilt block to be sent to one partner

beancounter17 04/ 7/2011 #

actually @perkl8r if you are doing one Dresden plate in the middle of the 12-1/2" block, the plate can only be 12" because you have to leave 1/4" on each side.

Adda 04/ 7/2011 #

Are you doing the round or the pointy plate or is it our choice?

perkl8r 04/ 8/2011 #

senders choice

perkl8r 04/11/2011 #

leave it to the beancounter to know the numbers!!!!......thank you dear for your help in this matter....I do appreicate any and all help!

But keep in mind you don't have to do just one plate in the center, you do have options!

I'm excited to get creative and see what I decide to make!
