About Me

Hello, I'm Brit and I love snail mail! I'm from England but have travelled all over the world - any chance I get to take a break from England and all the rain is welcome.

I grew up just outside London and lived in that area for most of my life (I also lived in North Carolina and Australia briefly). A couple of years ago I moved to Devon and it has been a huge adjustment - mainly because there are more animals than people and everything is far away/closed super early.

Part-time I run a baking business and I'm also a qualified nail technician so I'm kept busy doing all kinds of things. Previously I worked in tv/film as a makeup artist (special fx/boring stuff) and also music management.

I really like exchanging postcards so if we're paired in a swap and you want to exchange a couple more then please just send me a message :)

I would never flake on a swap - why bother signing up if you have no intention of following through? There are enough jerks to deal with in daily life; I refuse to be one of them!

Likes

I'm fairly easy to please and mainly enjoy getting to know people and learning about other cultures!

Animals - Love all animals, mainly dogs - square headed terriers are my favourite! Donkeys, horses and most any fluffy baby animal are all good. Not a fan of labradors/westies/collies/spaniels. Really, really hate cats.

Postcards - I really love postcards, both sending and receiving - I like to decorate mine as much as possible (the postal workers must think I'm insane). If you could put the local weather on it I'd love that too. I am happy to see any postcard in my mailbox, but for those of you with a huge selection here are some particular favourites!

  • Anything especially weird is always welcome. If you have bizarre postcards you're stuck with then I'd welcome them!

  • I'm a fan of different gods from any religion, anything colorful.

  • Science/anatomy related are great

  • Weird local landmarks - Fascinated by odd things like "World's Largest Ball of Twine", "World's Largest Banana", Foamhenge, all the attractions in Pigeon Forge - I find these things delightful and you automatically win a heart!

  • Aquariums are my favourite places so if you happen to visit one I'd love a postcard. Or fish/sea creature stickers!

Stickers - I collect stickers, started when I was a small child and I guess the obsession never went away. I like to cover my laptop/phone/books/anything with a flat surface with stickers and use them on mail too. Any design is great but scratch-n-sniff or crazy texture, heat change (UPDATE: apparently they are called Oilie liquid crystal) and wild designs will get extra brownie points!

Asian things - the crazier the better! Anything bright and impossible to understand with random animals/characters.

Science - Human anatomy is my favourite, love biology. Anything to do with science is great.

Nail art and beauty - I am obsessed with nail art and love trying out new things like water decals, stamping plates etc. I also love skin care, make-up and beauty and am always interested to learn about new products/traditions from all around the world.

College Sports - I love to collect college sport memorabilia; postcards, stickers, those fake tattoos, pennants, tags from clothes etc. Whatever your local college is (public/Ivy/community), I'd love anything branded with the logo or mascot! KU basketball takes up a good couple months out of my year.

Love: Travel-related things, tacky and ridiculous, overly cutesy things, neon, animal print, gummy candy, fruit themed things, vanilla scented anything, cake, stickers, dinosaurs, interesting architecture, head bands, washi tape.

Favorite Music

Almost everything except for reggae, folk and jazz - cannot stand either. My favourites are: Patsy Cline, Sparklehorse, The Get Up Kids, Black Nielson, Spoon, Britney Spears, Faron Young, Party Ben, Danity Kane, Miranda Lambert, Jonathan Richman, Reggie and the Full Effect..... will add more later.

Favorite Television

Friday Night Lights, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, The Mindy Project, How it's Made, Dance Moms, Parks and Rec, RHO Melbourne, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, 19 Kids and Counting, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, The Bachelorette.... I like a lot of different things!

Favorite Books

Carter Beats the Devil, The Genius Factory, Divergent, Human Anatomy.

Dislikes

Other than cats (seriously, no cats) i'm not a fan of Winnie the Pooh, spiritual things, boring stuff, alcohol, cigarettes, ugh moustache things, "keep calm and any words" sign bugs me for some reason, primates/monkeys, dolphins (too smug), owls - I don't hate them but kinda bored of owl things.

Stamps

I feel like I should mention this as I know that a lot of people (including myself) like to receive interesting stamps. I live in a tiny countryside village and 99% of the time the ladies in the post office (yes, we have a post office which is part of a mini grocery store) don't let me pick out stamps, they just give me a standard postage stamp or print out a label :( Sometimes I gently hassle them into giving me the more interesting ones but a lot of the time they won't take the bait so I'd like to apologize in advance if you get a boring stamp! I love to see all the crazy stamps from around the world so I know mine are probably a little disappointing. I don't have any specific wishlist, any with animals, people, architecture, science, local culture are always fun but standard issue are absolutely fine too :)

Comment: I like small villages and I used to live in one. Thanks for mentioning the Devon flag - I am very much into vexillology and you started me looking into the net for this flag. I have put the Dolton postcard in my blog at: .. http://flynnfrogg.blogspot.com.au/2014/07/sw-ch-194-dolton-small-village-in-s-w.html .. Do have a look when you have the time. Thanks again for the card.
Response: Really glad you liked it, and looked up the flag; I'm noticing it even more since I sent this card! Your blog is so interesting!

Comment: What a quiet place! It looks relaxing staying there :-) Thank you very much for the card!
Response: Thank you for rating :) it is very peaceful but I think it's better as a vacation spot rather than to love here - gets a little boring!

Comment: Thank you for the interesting cottages postcard, Also for your tale of putting life size mannequins around the village. Creepy! Shirley
Response: Glad you like it - the mannequins are multiplying in the surrounding villages and are super-creepy. I almost crashed my car a few times; they have them sitting on walls, scaling buildings and just standing on pavements - horrifying! Thankfully they don't have them in my village.... yet.

Response: No worries, such a fun swap! You know what's really crazy; the Australia sticker I used on your envelope was brought over here by my aunt who I lived with in Adelaide - now it's gone full circle! Small world indeed!

Comment: Thanks for the beautiful Devon railway card! The stamps are terrific as well. I'll have to check with my sister-in-law about the Hallmark show--she's the expert in the household!
Response: You are most welcome, really happy that you liked it. Let me know if you check out the show - it's totally cheesy but instantly likeable, considering it's about mail you may enjoy it!

Comment: Your postcard of Exmoor is one of the prettiest ones I've ever gotten!! Okay, true or false, hard to choose.... I'm guessing it's true that you were in a movie with Kirsten Dunst. Didn't she recently film a movie in the UK?
Response: You are correct although it was many, many years ago. I'm glad you like the card I chose - I'm quite lucky as there are lots of really pretty places like that near where I live!

Comment: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this postcard… my husband collects "food" postcards and I love unusually shaped postcards so you can see we will be negotiating over this card for a while…classic example of beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? Thank you so much for choosing to send this one…
Response: Oh wow, lucky pick I guess! I'm so happy that you both love what I thought was actually quite a hideous card! I will keep an eye out for more unusual shapes and food themed ones, then you won't have to fight over that one :)
