People in the postoffice have a board with a 1/4 inch slot to check whether envelopes are regular or large. I made one by printing a 1/4 x 6" box onto a piece of paper, taping that to a piece of thickish cardboard, and cutting out the slot with an X-acto knife. Actually, the cardboard was from a box of oatmeal from Costco, thin corrugated cardboard. I aligned the slot lengthwise, with the corrugations, so it was easy to cut.
