About Me

living a patternless life spanning town and country on the banks of the Big River some people call the Columbia. That river is one of the most important characters in my life, for sure.

I have two daughters, ages almost 14 (Alice) and 11 (Opal), who are quite brilliant. Between the four of us (if you count the man), we have a very nautical theme to our lives. Kayaks, boats, pirate stories (shudder), sea chanties. Mermaids and whales and salmon, too, all things maritime! My youngest girl loves horses and Japanese culture, and the eldest loves writing, rabbits and sailing. Both of them like the theater.

for sock swap: my foot size is 9.5/10 or 40-41 euro. wool is my favorite, it doesn't need to be superwash! And I really love all colors, although I don't usually wear tropical hues...

I really like working with natural materials, things I call elemental. I like wool, wood, metal and bone, that sort of thing. I like rain, and snow, and big dramatic skies, and I love wind. I have a great love of symbolic language, and things that have more than one meaning. I think that is why I prefer natural materials to plastics, they have more depth. Plus, I like the way natural materials just get richer as they age, not "pilly."

I lived for several years on a dirt road with no electricity. I learned a lot about wildness and listening. Someday I will live a totally handmade life, but not all handmade by me. People talk about self-sustainability, but I think it's really all about community. We humans need each other, and we need the respect and cooperation and blessing of all the other species, too.

Anyway, back to lists...I work with any color I can get my hands on. Really, there is no color I don't like!

I am the happy recipient of (natural fiber) fabric pieces in all sizes (for my piecework), yarn, embroidery floss, wool to spin (and dye), double pointed needles, seeds. I also like interesting papers and notecards, as I write a lot of letters. Plus I cut and paste ironic metaphor (in the form of postcards) as much as I can..

Alice and I collect international stamps with the following themes: plant, animal, folk tales, handwork/national craft, boats, mushrooms, old buildings. Really narrowed down, eh? Basically we like pretty ones, and not stamps with pics of old men, important though they may be.

I love to get postcards, used to collect them a bit. My favorite kinds are the regional variety, a little bit of town and country, the name of the town, the super touristy ones!

I think old anatomical pictures are fascinating, but I am not into skullys. Or skate culture and its aesthetic, for that matter, although I am old school punk mixed with hippie. If such a thing is possible. A grown up Lost Girl that hasn't forgotten.

I wear necklaces and rings (but my fingers are big) and brooches. I don't wear bracelets, and my earring needs are mostly covered. However, I do wear knit wrist warmers EVERY DAY. Sometimes I just cut off the feet of cool stockings, sometimes, I wear handmade cuffs. I also love cool socks.

I would love small pieces of art too. I am always on the lookout.

I have sheep and a lovely garden that is not at all tidy, but I am moving to town soon (although I will still have ties to the farm) and I am going to have a radio show, so I am on the hunt for music music music.

I like scents, but florals don't work on me for the most part. I generally wear blends that have some resins to ground them at least.

I am fascinated by roadshow culture.

I collect wool blankets. Sometimes I wear them as shawls or skirts. You know I measure my wealth in blankets...

That should do it for now.

wait! * I am looking for leftover sock yarn so I can make some crazy striped socks. If you have a leftovers from your last socks, I would love them! Also, I am always the happy recipient of knitted or crocheted swatches that you don't know what to do with. I have been slowly putting together a blanket for my youngest daughter from these swatches.

Favorite Music

Eclectic! You can see my cd list here: http://fivegallonbucket.net/cdlist.html

I like mixed up sounds from different cultures, experimental, improvisational, some good old indie pop, rock n roll, guitars! Oh yeah, also folk in all its forms, freak or no, sea chanties, pickin music, swamp music.

Favorite Movies

hmmm, I have been watching movies about art lately. Touch the Sound about Evelyn Glennie was especially fascinating.
Akira Kurosawa, action/espionage, period films w/o a lot of sex, science fiction. Joss whedon. Fantasy, too, as long as it's not tooo cheesy.

Favorite Television

we don't watch tv, but sometimes I rent episodes from the local movie store. The ones we have rented are CSI, Farscape, Firefly.

Favorite Crafts

fiber arts! knitting, sewing, piecing, a bit of crochet, a bit of embroidery, some spinning, and even a bit of dyeing. You can see examples on my flickr or blog.

I am not at all precise in my craft. I do freeform, but by this I don't mean scrumbling. I let the materials talk to me, as they say, and then I try to reach a compromise with them! However, lately my knitting has been focussed on socks and lace. I think that the structure of using patterns is really helpful to me in my Chaos dominated world.

I have a huge stash of fabric and yarn. This is really hard for me and also I want more!

We have sheep too, and I like to garden. Especially interested in Permaculture.

I also like to make mix cds, and little pockets to put them in.

I don't do scrapbooking, or altered books, nor do I paint. I see a rubber stamp, and I go, "huh."

One thing that has my interest these days is silk. I am slowly developing a relationship with it.

I have also been doing a fair amount of collage! in the form of handmade postcards. I don't have a lack of interesting papers, but I do appreciate it when people send them to me.

Hi there!

I haven't received a rating from you yet on the Knitted Sock swap. I have tried emailing you a couple of times. Just wondering; since I put so much time (a month) into creating these socks for you, as per your specifications (natural fibers, larger size, etc), and they were my first pair, I wanted to know if you got them, and what you thought of them.

Thanks in advance!
