Description:

I saw this swap in the Amazing Mail Art group and thought it would be a fun swap for newbies.

This is a Kandinsky inspired mail art swap that will continue for several months. You can sign up for just one swap, or for all of them, depending how large you want your final piece to be.

  • You will make one 4" x 6" postcard, that is divided into six 2 inch sections.
  • You will then color circles in each 2 inch square, inspired by the work of Kandinsky Squares with Concentric Circles.
  • Each postcard will have 6 sections with concentric circles.
  • We will mail one postcard to one partner each month. At the end of the series, you will have several that you can frame together to make one big collaboration project.
  • You can make these separately each month, or you can do them all at one time, and save them for each month's swap.
  • Your postcards must be 4 x 6, but can be made with any medium. Feel free to paint, collage, sew, etc. Please mail these naked (not in an envelope).
  • Send ON TIME. This is one of the swap requirements and your partner may rate you a 3 if you send late.
  • Rate promptly and accurately.
  • Communicate with your partner and the host (me, @TC if there are problems.

Does the PC have to look similar to the original or can we interprete as we want? I was thinking of using scrapbook paper or so.

You can use any medium you like, as long as your postcard has six 2" squares that are filled with circles of varying colors.

Thanks. :)

I've never used Oil Pastels before, so. . .a question. If we are to mail them "naked," will Oil Pastels smear? Or should I use another medium to create my card?

midteacher 06/ 2/2016 #

@reader44ever that is a good question! I don't know if they will smear or not in the mail. I was thinking it might be good to go over it with some type of sealant like a finishing spray. I was going to mail mine and see what happened. If it it arrives poorly then I was going to do a resend.
Perhaps someone has a better idea or had some experience with this.

According to my box of oil pastels: "Works made in oil pastel do not need to be fixed and the colors will remain firmly bonded to the paper or canvas surface."

TC 06/ 2/2016 #

I just made my card. The pastels seem to adhere pretty well, but I'm going to let it sit for a day and then decide whether to use a fixative.

I really enjoyed the coloring process. Remember this is an abstract piece; the circles don't need to be perfectly round or the color perfectly blended.

Thanks midteacher and TC! I will try it with oil pastels and hope for the best! :-)

Working on my card. It glitters. A lot. XD

reader44ever 06/ 3/2016 #

I hope it's okay that my 4x6 card is sort of 4ish by 6ish and the six squares are sort of 2ish by 2ish. Apparently, I can't draw (or cut) a straight line to save my life. lol ;-)

I will secure mine with a clear adhesive spray.

I am so sad I missed this one!!! Looking forward to the next.

@Nachtauge - I LOVE glitter! Great idea.
