Description:

A magic yarn ball is a ball of yarn that contains surprises wrapped up in it. You start with a skein of yarn, and wrap it up into a ball, adding little treasures along the way. It doesn't take much time at all, actually! As your partner uses the yarn for whatever, they find surprises along the way.

You will have one partner, where you will make one Magic Yarn ball out of fall or autumn colored yarn (deep reds, oranges, browns...). There should be 10 treasures inside, at least 5 of which should be fall themed (not Halloween...I am going for the season here). It would be nice if the other 5 things relate to your partner's profile, but not required. Treasues can be handmade or store bought, but don't spend more than $10 on the treasures. Look for dollar store things or things you already have or can make. No junk, please! Also, please use nice yarn, a few dollars a skein, not the cheap 99 cent stuff. The length doesn't matter, as long as you use the whole skein.

To summarize, spend $10 on 10 little treasues, and about $3-6 on the yarn.

Due to increased postage rates (boo!), I am going to make this US only, but feel free to start an int'l one.

Must have a 4.8 rating to play, otherwise message me and we'll chat. Same goes for newbies. Thanks!

I love the concept of this swap! And fall being my favorite season...still re-adjusting as i missed at least 12 of them! Great idea! Is there a yardage min...wondering as to the wrap factor what is recomended! (350-400?)

shopandbid 08/20/2007 #

Is there a type of yarn which should be used I know in other swaps some have specified no cheap yarn

KellyR 08/21/2007 #

No yardage min as long as you use the whole skein. Also, I updated the description to say to use nice yarn, not 99 cent stuff.

Are the wrapped prizes supposed to be based on your partner's profile, or is this something that could be done in advance?

KellyR 08/21/2007 #

It's in the profile...5 items should be fall (not halloween) themed, and the other 5 could be either more fall themes, from the profile, or random, as long as they are nice items that anyone could use.

It doesn't matter what length or thickness yarn you use, because it seems balance out. If you use fluffy yarn, it tend to be shorter, and skinny yarn tends to be longer, so either way I think you get good coverage of your objects. I have used Homespun yarn for this before, both the regular and baby kinds, and it worked very well. I think I am going to use it this time too. It's a little fluffy and easy to hide things, but you also get a good amount for your money. I think it's good quality too. I have made scarves with it.

Also, you might want to include the wrapper so your partner knows what size needles or hooks to use.

ok, so I've been drinking... again.. it's my one day off, I'm allowed... but here's what i'm thinking... I'm obsessed with surprises... I NEED a magic yarn ball. i'm a meatatarian who joined a Vegan swap to get one.. please note I'm also building a pinata just to get surprises.... seriously, if this swap wasn't here, i'd start one. I NEED a yarn ball... so I'm thinking... shiny objects rock. No, I'm not high. They do and you know it... hair clips, earrings, you love shiny objects as much as I do... and then, all the way in the middle, when you're done with your project, one of those little tiny bottles of booze...

is that the best idea ever or what?? any of you knitters out there wanna help, I just got recruited for a project... hats for Canadian hookers..

ok, I'm gonna shut up now. Seriously, though, we are making hats for them. I'm learning how to make hats. It's cold in Canada.

Shecooks, You are hilarious! o.k., You convinced me that I need to try this one. Kinda scared.

simplysarah 09/ 3/2007 #

shecooks! you are indeed funny as hell... I work at a store that always has 99cent mini bottles....lol... now i will think of you when i am stocking them! I wanna join the shiny object & liquor magic ball!!! lmfao!

hats for hookers? thats simply great! you should make matching legwarmers, so they can still wear short skirts...lol.

I hope I get "shecooks" just so I can hide a tiny bottle of booze in the middle. I wonder if that's against postal regulations? Anybody know?

kkdoow 09/ 6/2007 #

Ok... I'm signing up for this swap because shecooks SWEARS cool people are doing it and I want to be one of the cool kids. So if you want to give someone booze and you DON'T get shecooks, but you do get me... you're in luck! I'm a lush! Woot!

And hey! I just went to San Francisco and spent half my paycheck on some seriously amazing skines- most of which I have no plans for so I'm all set!
