INTERNATIONAL SWAP!

I love libraries and everything related to them. You should too!

For this swap you will send two parners a small package of library/book related goodness with a value of around $5 although that isn't a hard and fast rule as items could be handmade or store-bought.

This could include things like: bookmarks (bought or handmade), library cards (old, used, new, handmade), a small piece of library-related art (drawing/collage/whatever), book thongs, bookplates. Of course it would be lovely if these things also related in some way to your partners profile. If you have any thoughts of other things you can send, please leave a message to inspire others!

Swap Requirements:

Newbies welcome or 4.7+ rating. Everyone must have a completely filled out profile. If I think you look dodgy i'll ask why or ban you!

Please PM me if you think there's something I should add, or if you have any questions. <3

This is such a good idea. Just am hoping to be able to come up w/ enough things. Will be looking forward to doing this one.

In case you might need another resource for this swap: http://www.blyberg.net/card-generator/ This page enables you to make a catalog card personalized.

KerrWriter 10/ 5/2007 #

that link ROCKS!

Wfhound 10/ 5/2007 #

I'm a librarian, so this one should be easy for me! Everything is computer now where I work. I can help ya if you need a Dewey Decimal number. (Dogs: 636.7) And yes, I DO wear sensible shoes. AND trifocals. Plus I'm old and crabby. Yeah, baby, I got it goin on!

bettie 10/ 5/2007 #

Stmpnmnga - that link is awesome. Wfhound - you are my idol!

Caam 10/ 5/2007 #

Wfhound, I always wanted to be "you!" Maybe one day I will fulfill my dream of librarian--hood. But I miss going to the library and using the card catalogue. It just does not seem to be the same, even if the computers simplify (??) things. I'm in for this one!

Artistic 10/ 5/2007 #

What a fun idea for a swap. This book and library lover is in! :)

Wfhound 10/ 7/2007 #

We got rid of our card catalog about 10 years ago. I still have tons of the cards in boxes and I use the backs for notes ALL THE TIME. If I have something to do, I write it on a card. When it's done, I toss the card. Lookin for a phone number? Write it on a card. Fabulous system. Yeah, the cards were kinda cool, but try typing or filing those babies. Ack! I was like 2 years behind. And when I tossed a book that was old or beat up, I had to yank all the cards too. There were at least 4 for each book, usually way more. Aaauugh. Give me keyword computer search anytime. Oh, I had a little gizmo where I could type a master card on a stencil and then with this inked up thingy I could "print" out as many as I needed. Oooh, high-tech! Man, those were the days. I still stamp the date due in the back of the book with a rubber stamp. A touch of nostalgia. Oh, and yeah, I still get to say, "Shhhh." Yeah, had to take a graduate level class in it. :)

Wfhound - Say, are you Nancy Pearl? :-)

Stmpnmnga 10/ 8/2007 #

Wlfhound-you sound like my kind of person. Don't throw it away if it is useful. That card plan is such a good method to keep yourself organized. Would you want to sell any of them? Keep up the good work.

Anniehall 10/ 8/2007 #

Hi. I love this swap. I'm study to be librarian. I'm so excited!

Wfhound 10/ 8/2007 #

No, I'm not Nancy Pearl, although somebody did give me an action figure of her. Really!

GnomedePlume 10/ 9/2007 #

Ohh! I'm a librarian, too. I have some AWESOME old work supplies kicking around that will be perfect for this swap. No, I will not mail you the old card catalog cases. We're using them as cubicle walls. Plus, postage would be a killer.

Tiiamaria 10/10/2007 #

Another librarian just singned up for this swap :)

keroleen73 10/10/2007 #

I got the Nancy Pearl action figure deluxe set for my last birthday, hahaha! :-D

bettie 10/10/2007 #

I love how real librarians are signing up! Though i'm kind of scared i'll get one of you as a swap partner because it'll probably be difficult finding something unique to send!

Anniehall 10/10/2007 #

Hi. I didn't know Nancy Peral. She's like the classic librarian stereotype! I think that she represents the "biblio-chic" or "librarian-chic" style. Anyway I don't want to be like her! Greetings from Chile!

szreader 10/11/2007 #

I signed up a while back, but want to chime in that I've worked in a library since 1979 . . . and I have a Nancy Pearl "Shushing" action figure. Plus, I heard NP speak a couple of years ago. She was GREAT! She has two books you might want to check out. When I was in h.s. I worked in the public library and got to change the tiny date numerals -- with tweezers! -- in the pencil-end date stamps. That was one messy job, which is why they made the h.s. workers do it! Fond memories, though.

ariel91 10/11/2007 #

Yay! I just started studying to be a library technician. I love going to the library, bookmarks, books, and bookplates. This should be fun! I just joined :)

bettie 10/13/2007 #

Less than a week until partners are assigned! Why did I make the sign-up date so far away? Today i've been making cross-stitch bookmarks for the swap. :)

grassbeneathmyfeet 10/13/2007 #

I work at a Special Collections library! Unfortunately, I can't send you guys any 17th century Bibles or 15th century maps, but I'll find something good.

keroleen73 10/16/2007 #

grassbeneathmyfeet - Oh, do I envy you! O_o

ariel91 10/21/2007 #

Were partners assigned yet? I don't have any way of seeing mine if they were.

szreader 10/21/2007 #

I don't think that partners have been assigned yet -- perhaps soon. The 19th was Friday...and it's Sunday night now.

bettie 10/22/2007 #

Sorry for the delay. I had to go away on Thursday and only just got home. Partners have been assigned! x

spoonergregory 10/28/2007 #

My packages are on their way from the UK to fromthepines and Arylkin - hope you enjoy them!

Starwatcher 10/29/2007 #

I had never heard of Nancy Pearl before the discussion here (I am not a librarian) but after the mention of her here, her name leapt off the cover of "Good reading-the magazine for book lovers" Feb 2007 issue which I picked up at our local library. She does seem like an incredible person - and she is so right - being an avid reader means you have to give up many other things in your life (after all, we all have only 24 hours a day and we must sleep sometime!). Thanks for hosting this swap Bettie. I've learned a few things and have enjoyed putting together the packages. Grassbeneathmyfeet and knitting cateling, they are on the way to you!

bettie 10/30/2007 #

Starwatcher - you were one of my swap partners and I sent your package yesterday. Mail seems to be taking about 7 days to the US as the moment!

Also, grassbeneathmyfeet - your stuff is on the way too!

szreader 11/ 4/2007 #

This was a very fun swap. Thanks for thinking it up!

Griffie 11/ 5/2007 #

Packages out to bettie and imaventriloquist! Hope you like them. Thanks, too, to brittercat and hellakella for great parcels! loved both packages and I was so spoiled! They both arrived today. Many thanks.

bettie 11/ 7/2007 #

Thanks for participating everyone! I've noticed a couple of people are still marked as 'not sent' so if any of you don't receive a package let me know and i'll angel (little packages!). xoxo
