About Me

About Me: This “artsy” picture of me was taken by my 2 and-a-half year-old grandson, with whom I share my art space whenever I can. It is a creative room that’s part of our 1932 brick Tudor-style house in North Tacoma, which I call the Hobbit House because it has rounded alcoves, a round front door, and fairies at the bottom of the garden.

Philosophy: The world is so full of magic – being able to capture some of that creatively brings me incredible joy.

Favorite Creating: I like multi-media, where paint or pencil or pen or beads or sewing or metalwork or clay - just about anything! - can be involved. I am an "art explorer." I have had formal training, but enjoy all ranges of creative energies (except dark, frightening subject matter - I'm not good with horror.) I enjoy ATC's, altered books, sewing, encaustic (wax) collage (any collage, really), all forms of painting, stamping, embossing, oil pastels, pen and ink, polymer clay, doll-making and glass, beading and jewelry making - whatever suits my fancy and helps me to grow as a creator.

Pastimes (besides creating): I have a Master's in counseling and a small practice I enjoy. When I am not with clients, babysitting my grandsons, or swimming, I enjoy listening to piano music, reading (esp. fantasy), discussions about transformation, gardening (esp. flowers - color!), candlelight, trees, the rituals of the seasons, all things pretty, kindness, champagne, vintage, finding the light in people and environments, rabbits, cats, songbirds, rocks and natural artifacts, celestial, fine details, baths (and bubbles) romanticism, purple, Fall.

Some Dislikes: Mean-ness, Cartoon-ish art, things that are too 'cutesy,' gloom and doom messages, over-embellishments, elitism, too country-ish (but I love primitive), narrow-mindedness, singular religiousness.

Background with exchanges: I have a few friends and family with whom I often exchange art. I have done a couple of book swaps, as well as postcard and card swaps. I am looking forward to connecting with a wider community to share creatively.

Comment: WOW! Melinda, is it Christmas or my birthday or what? I got the most amazing package in today's mail! The tag is beautiful--did you use some Perfect Pearls mists or what to get the shimmer on the words and beautiful background? I'd love to know what techniques you combine in creating it! The message was also perfect. I am, by the way, feeling MUCH better. The injection was so easy--and I did use your CD the day before. Thanks so much for it--I'll be using it many times I suspect in the future. And a "few flat items"??? I guess so! They are perfect and will get put to good uses --if I can part with some of them. The red and gold trim is gorgeous. And just a bit more of the amazing silk "ribbon" will be stashed with the other and used for several projects. to you cut/tear those yourself and color them? They are perfection for my Tim H style creations. Thank you, thank you!

Comment: Melinda--I thought it was Christmas day when I opened your package! The tag is beautifully created and lovely in every way--you DO know Tim Holtz and must have memorized my profile! Would you be willing to let me know, in a PM,the techniques you used? I recognize some but am curious about a some that I see and am trying to figure out.Everything else is SO EXACTLY what I'd pick if I came across them in a flea market or antique/junk shop, or re-sale shop. Where did you find this amazing ribbon? Some is tulle, but what is the fabric in the others and did you cut them yourself? If not, where can I find more? (Like I'll use up all you sent in just a couple weeks!) I wish I could give you 10 hearts my friend--still facing health issues and had to do a cardiopulmonary stress test today to be sure my PMC doc can clear me for the trigger thumb surgery which was supposed to be done yesterday. Comment: Hello, I'm sorry for this late rating since I got your package already a week ago. Life's been hectic, maybe even chaotic (moving to a new house, separating from a long term relationship and whatnot). Then comes this little parcel from overseas that holds this delicate sea creature with a message of remembering to ask for help when in need, to look forward and leave the past behind. It was incredible how the words touched me and my situation, it almost made me cry. The octo-merm has moved with me and is sitting on a kitchen shelf at the moment in my new home.
