About Me

Hi! I'm Barbie (she/her), a librarian from Virginia. I am interested in long letter writing and finding a new penpal or two. I love to write, and on occasion doodle some. :) Recently, I've been starting to get back into watercolor and mail art, and swapping is perfect for that. It is nice to have a prompt to follow.

In terms of swapping, I like getting to know people and just chatting. Write about anything you like! I like finding out about daily life in different places. Long rambling letters are the best. I really do want to know the ins and outs of what you had for dinner and all about that cute noise your dog just made. If you ever would like a reply, just make sure to let me know! My favorite part about all of this is making connections with people around the world and sending little happy gifts.

I'm also very happy to give book recommendations (really it is my job as a reader's advisory focused librarian... but I never really stop. Ask any of my friends). If we're matched up and you don't know what to write about, I'd love to know what books you've enjoyed.

I'm very into the idea of using what you have on hand/making something/supporting artists. Right now it feels like so much of the world is obsessed with buying things and for me, swapping is about creating and sharing. If you have the bandwidth and it isn't specifically against the swap rules, I'd love to see what you make! Even if you think you aren't artistic, I will love it! I also acknowledge that not everyone (including myself at times) has the energy to get creative, so please send as you are able. Adjacent to that, typed letters are always ok with me.

The list of interests/favorites below is just a list of ideas, because I know I worry about sending things that aren't what the recipient will like and don't want you to feel anxious about it if I can share a bit here. Feel free to "go rogue". :)

Swapping Information

I check my P.O. box about 1-2 times a week, and the mail is slow here. Also, I make a point to only sign up for swaps I can send promptly. If you haven't received from me after a reasonable amount of time, I'm happy to resend. Over the years I've been penpalling and writing letters, things just get lost sometimes, or take 6 months getting back to the sender. Please just let me know if you are worried about something I've sent.

Just want to let you know that any extras are lovely, but totally not necessary. I am very thankful for anything you send.

Also, this might be silly, but what is a "zazzle" card and why are they often not allowed to be swapped? I keep seeing this on swaps, but I have no idea what they are.

Interests and Favorite Things

My interests include:

  • science fiction books, film, and TV
  • really any books/reading/storytelling
  • fine art, graphic design, and illustration (I'd love to discuss your favorite artists!)
  • creepy things
  • outsider art
  • cryptids
  • witchy things
  • horror
  • history and historical clothing (#historybounding)
  • ghost stories
  • vintage clothing
  • vintage/retro themes - 1990s and all the way back in time ;)
  • old photographs, especially of normal everyday people doing anything
  • zines
  • knitting
  • sewing
  • all things to do with plants/nature
  • bicycling
  • thunderstorms
  • environmentalism
  • LGBTQIA+ awesomeness
  • comics/graphic novels
  • bullet journaling/sketchbooks
  • vintage embroidery and cross stitch
  • books (I love to give and receive recommendations!)
  • music and making playlists (folk music is my fav, but I like it all really)
  • sitting in nature (especially near water)
  • cemeteries
  • houseplants
  • dinosaurs
  • old computer interfaces/memes
  • #cottagecore

I'm not very good at cooking - but I'd love recipes/tips! (esp. dairy free)

I love talking about or collecting stickers, art, and postcards on any of these topics. I sort of collect stamps as well, but not super seriously. I just love looking at the old ones and ones from around the world.

In terms of "aesthetic" I'm drawn to the grittier/dark/creepy looks, and I love when things are just a little rough around the edges or off kilter a bit. I am also into more "adult" themed things and would be happy to receive them. Basically, the weirder the better.

A few things I'd rather not receive (as they are harmful to me/others) are:

  • religious themed items
  • items containing hate speech to any marginalized group (no racist/homophobic/transphobic/ableist/etc. things please)
  • things related to harry potter (see above)
  • things related to dieting/restrictive eating
  • scented items (I have migraines triggered by almost all scents, natural and manufactured, most non-floral tea -like black tea- is ok though)
  • anything containing milk

Favorite Media

Thought I'd add a section with some of my favorite media as I see it on other people's profiles and find it helpful. I'd love to know if we have any shared interests! (This is a blend of movies/tv/books/podcast/contentcreators/fandoms/etc... I put them all together in my head).

  • Twin Peaks
  • Lore Podcast
  • Star Trek
  • Carl Sagan
  • The Secret History by Donna Tartt
  • N. K. Jemisin
  • Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher Network
  • Gravity Falls
  • Unexplained Podcast
  • Supernatural
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Neil Gaiman
  • Indigo Girls
  • My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris
  • Iron and Wine
  • The Addams Family
  • Wes Anderson (most of the time)
  • Rainbow Brite
  • Sherlock Holmes (the original text)

I'll probably add more/take things off as my brain switches to other things. :)

Comment: Thank-you SO MUCH for your spooky letter!! The stationery is super cute & thank-you for the extra goodies too <3 Oddly enough, I also live in a haunted apartment building haha. My mum, brother (non believer) and I all saw something glide across our ceiling once causing the whole room to go black! It was super spooky, probably the wildest thing we've seen. I've also been touched by a spirit here before - which was hella creepy. I loved hearing about your paranormal experiences, & your personality really came through from the letter :) like talking to an old friend, haha. Thank-you again for everything & I hope that you are well!!
Comment: So nice having another Swap-bot person in the area :) Doesn't seem like a lot of us here... Thanks for the card and sharing your podcast method of tackling chores. Have a great holiday!

Comment: Thank you!!! I never watched Supernatural but based on how many of my friends have been complaining about the finale, I'm glad I never got into it! lol
Comment: Thanks for the fun herb postcard. Your list is amazing! I hope you get to try them all!
Comment: Thank you for the lovely postcard. I hope you were able to catch up on your penpal letters and chores! :)
Comment: Thank you so much for beautiful card, extra and cool stamps! I also like your mail art. Happy swapping!
Comment: Thanks for the letter and stickers. :) The little Mothman one is going on my laptop. I will check out the Buzzfeed video because it sounds like fun, and listen to the podcast episodes. I haven't read the Mothman Prophecies book. I watched the film and found it extremely boring, and the book sounds similarly so. I'm definitely keen to learn more about the Mothman.

Comment: Thank you so much!!! I thoroughly enjoy when people write interesting thoughts on postcards!! <3 and thank you so much for setting up this swap just for little old me!
Comment: I love speculative fiction too! I was hugely into sci-fi as a teenager, but read mostly fantasy, dystopian sci-fi, and realistic fiction these days. Hard sci-fi is great--I think the last I read was Blake Crouch's Dark Matter. Thanks for the new book for my TBR shelf!
